  1. I'm dying for more info about Columbia
  2. dude me too but I already knew I wasn't accepted outright so in my eyes this is pretty good news- way better than a rejection!
  3. What is the name of that book that everybody keeps talking about- the one about the graduate admissions process? I tried to retrace the threads and find it but I couldn't
  4. Sigh. Thanks for your time and advice. I've been working since I was fifteen, if they're worried about my professionalism... well, it would be funny if it wasn't so monumentally frustrating. I could definitely write a better SOP, that's probably the one thing I've gotten from this forum the most is that mine was a bit flat. Apparently (according to your helpful article) I'm very cliche. Convincing my parents that waiting a year is a smart move is going to be rough, but I'm starting to feel like I should. Yeah good point, the job I'm in now is tangentially related to my research interests and I could surely tie it in to a revised SOP next year.
  5. I guess getting a research job in soc without being enrolled somewhere isn't something I've heard of before, so I wouldn't know where to begin looking for that. At a university? My undergrad institution certainly wouldn't have hired somebody from outside for anything, but maybe other schools are different.
  6. Would anybody who's had an interview be able to tell me a little bit about what they were asked? I have one coming up and am not sure what they're going to ask, beyond what I already sent in with the application I'm not sure really what else there is. I know some people talked about it a little in this thread, specifically about statistics with a low quant GRE, but would anybody be able to speak to what the questions were like more generally?
  7. I realize my perception that you made an assumption that I have no idea what graduate school entails is most likely anxiety and insecurity driven, so thanks for sharing the article. I had some pretty amazing mentors as an undergrad that did a pretty good job of preparing me for the reality of the decision I'm making, as good of a job as any article I've found, including that one. But I mean, how would I gain more experience out of undergrad without being enrolled in some type of program? Any job I worked for the next year and a half wouldn't be in sociology.
  8. lmao great point
  9. academic job 100%, and yeah I mean I've spent the last few days trying to find out where recent PhD recipients from this school end up. I just don't feel super confident about it. But like, what if I turn it down and things aren't any better next application season and then I don't even have this program? It feels foolish to turn it down.
  10. not necessarily, some MA deadlines aren't until June
  11. So I haven't been accepted to any of my top choices. I haven't been rejected, but I'm not counting on anything at this point either. What do you guys think about choosing a school that's ranked high 20s vs. mid 80s when I feel like the mid 80s school is a better fit? I also just finished my undergrad and applied directly to PhD programs- so I'm considering the possibility of trying to get a MA and reapply to the programs that I really want to go to after, instead of taking one of the PhD offers, if that makes any sense at all idk. I've just been thinking a lot, any input would be helpful.
  12. Wondering what's up with Columbia- there are two acceptances via phone which I didn't really know was a thing- after I saw the first one, I figured it was a special circumstance with the individual's POI but now that there are two I'm wondering if they will all be phone calls? Or if they're done? Also, congrats to all the NYU and Columbia acceptances- my eyes could not be more green <3
  13. Did they tell you who it's with?
  14. If nobody else has heard from them today, it might not be bad news. Last year nobody heard from them until Feb. 18th, so I'm not sure why this offer was so early. But thank you! It's full funding for four years, tuition waiver and stipend for a graduate assistantship, with the potential to apply for a fifth year. It's my first acceptance and the first I've heard from any school, so I'm really excited... but I'm not going to lie, I'm a little disappointed that I didn't hear from Brown today! But definitely excited about the good news from Albany as well.
  15. That's me, I received an email late last night from the director of graduate studies with the acceptance, a letter, and funding info. It said I would get an official letter in the mail later this week, and then I got another email today saying that my decision had been updated in my application account.
  16. Same wait why would they care
  17. I'm not expecting to hear back from Stony Brook for a little while longer because the deadline was so late. I applied to both schools too though- what are your research interests?
  18. same and I'm super anxious now that others have heard ?
  19. Congrats! Sounds like it will be chaotic, but probably much better to do it before you're actually in the program. Agreed, the only reason I've calmed down a bit is that nobody on here has heard from any of the programs I applied to, but I think once I start seeing people hear back and I haven't gotten anything I'm really going to start freaking out
  20. I'm so jealous you had that attitude at all, the second I sent in my Jan 15th apps I started freaking out about the Dec 15th decisions... and I haven't stopped since.
  21. Nothing, I was really hoping we would hear something this week.
  22. Do you guys think a lot of schools are going to be next week? It seems like February 9th and 10th are popular days for schools to send decisions. Plus, my horoscope says I should expect big news on the 9th so,
  23. I'm really interested in gender and education, particularly secondary education, the role teachers play in continued gendering of their students, and how factors in high school play into career options and choices for students in a gendered way, particularly for students from working class families. There are professors at both Columbia and Brown that I really want to work with-Dr. DiPrete and Dr. Owens, respectively, and I've spoken with both of them briefly. I also think Indiana Bloomington would be a great fit, they have strong gender and strong education, and some grad students working on projects that are very similar to what I want to do- so I know I could do my research there. NYU would be great as well. I also applied to Harvard kind of as a yolo type of thing, SUNY Albany because it's close to home for me and their soc gender is good (but focuses more on the family), Kentucky because there's a professor there who's inspired me a lot but I'd be less than ecstatic about living in Kentucky, and Stony Brook for gender and also I went there as an undergrad.
  24. parade float
