I received an email this morning from UNC Chapel Hill to inform me I was admitted off of the waitlist! This is one of my top choices and I could not be more thrilled. It also means I’ll be turning down the waitlist at IU Bloomington, so hopefully someone moves up in the ranks there!

Hi! Congrats! I think— and others should correct me if I’m wrong— that unranked waitlists are use to ensure that there is a diverse cohort composition. I’m 19th century American, so if the person the said yes to declines their offer, then they would select someone from the waitlist for 19th century American. I doubt it’s always 1:1 like that, but they do try to keep cohorts balanced.
Okay that definitely makes sense! Thank you!

Waitlisted at UNC Chapel Hill!!!!!! They rejected me last year.
Hey there! I’m pretty quiet on the boards, but I’ve been waitlisted too! Also rejected last year, haha. I’m so so excited.
My letter mentioned that the waitlist Ian unranked...any idea on how they decide who gets off the waitlist?
anyway congrats and maybe I’ll meet you in April!

Congrats!!! Makes me nervous that I still haven't heard from them, lol. If you don't mind me asking, when did you submit your application? I submitted mine fairly late so i'm hoping that's why.
Hey there, different person but I received my acceptance to the literature MA at NCSU this morning. My application was complete in early January! There was no information on funding though.

I’m waitlisted at IU Bloomington for PhD. Apparently I’m first on the waitlist for 19c American. It’s my first choice, so I really hope this works out!

How early? I occasionally find myself dabbling in the late 19th century (Poe, Melville, Dickinson, etc.), but nothing too much earlier than that. I wish I knew more about early American literature, though, and I remember reading a lot of cool Native American folklore in a survey course I took a few years back.
I wouldn't consider myself an expert, but mostly the 19th century--especially folks like Melville, Hawthorne, and Crane. Oh and the Transcendentalists.

Hello all! After a very rushed and unfortunately unsuccessful Fall 2017 application season (the fact that I even applied is hilarious to me now, after everything I've learned about the process after the fact...) I'm on board with you all!
I'm doing my very best to remain excited and optimistic about this application season, and trying to be happy about the year I'll have off in between undergrad and (hopefully, hopefully) grad school. Sooooooooooooo right now I plan to finish my thesis and graduate, then start the large reading list of both theory and literature that I've made for myself to both pass the time and improve my knowledge. I'll be taking the GRE lit and re-taking the GRE because what could be more fun? While also figuring out where exactly I'll be applying this round.
Let's all be friends, okay!
Oh also, any other early American folks around?
