  1. I'm just wondering, this was a sentence I received in March from Augustana, (a program I received a interview from last year). It seems a bit borderline icky. "If and when all other things were equal between applicants, preference was given to applicants from areas of the country (USA) which are known to be underserved or have workforce needs."
  2. Also willing to help if you need temporary housing while finding a place! Really its not as hard as people make it out to be.
  3. Hey you guys invited to Stanislaus. I live in the Bay and know how difficult it is, re housing, but am happy to help with contacts and questions re housing (with friends/contacts I probably get a housing offer 2-3 times a month?). I wanna help it not be so hard! And if you have questions about living here, I'm happy to help!
  4. I have a feeling things will be moving A LOT tomorrow. It's past 6 EST time, So probably no updates. THANKS SUPPORT GROUP!
  5. Just wanted to say to all those people who are worrying about being accepted (like me, I am an outlier, older applicant, lots of diverse experience, but maybe not so much what places are looking for...) Some of the program directors/counselors have said to me how common it is for really great GC's to have applied 2 or 3 years. Yes it sucks to be rejected. And unfortunately the application process is expensive. But if you/we really want it, try again.
  6. I just said this to someone else - I think its okay and most of us understand as long as you don't hold them until 4.30 pm tomorrow! Here's hoping things move for everyone soon!
  7. No worries! And congrats on the offer! Its all part of the process. I'll hope for USF for you then Did SLC call you to offer the place?
  8. I'm still waiting on waitlists as well. Anyone tried calling SLC? It's my top choice.
  9. I just wanted to remind everyone in the craziness next week that if you get in to several programs at least to let the programs you definitely don't want to go to know. It says we have until the 26 to decide, but if you get off the waiting list at 4.30 on 26th you still only have until 5.00 on the 26th to say yes. It helps others that may really want that place be able to have some peace of mind. (and have a great day!) Also its kind of sucky to hold a place when you know you won't be going there. Now I have to find something else to distract myself with for a few days :-/
  10. For worst qualities - Go with something honest but show how you are working on it. Interviewers hate those worst qualities that aren't actually worst qualities like "I'm too much of a perfectionist", "I pay too much attention to detail".
  11. Some of the questions I got last year, I thought I'd share: What would your friends say were your best qualities? Your worst qualities? What do you think is the hardest part about being a Genetic Counselor? Tell me about memorable case you remember from shadowing. There was a scenario question, I don't really remember the particulars but it amounted to - what would you do if you did a genetic test on a couple and their child and found out that the father was not the biological father of the child (a recessive disorder) and the couple were worried because they wanted to have more children.
  12. Just think if you do end up a second year applicant you'll be even more prepared and confident in the career and school you've chosen. Hope you hear back from the other schools soon!
  13. Hey! Just wanted to say I was there last year. (and partially there this year) I'm a sort of unique applicant in that I am over thirty and finished my degrees 9 years ago. My GPA wasn't the strongest, but I would say I have a really strong resume. Some schools are looking for those numbers and some the other part of the picture. Most likely it had more to do with its the wrong school or the wrong time - and in the end they are getting 200+ applicants for 6 positions. And getting a waitlisted interview IS a big deal . If this is for you you'll find the right school and the right time, soon.
  14. I agree re this, always better to overdress than under dress, unless you are applying to work at a startup. (I mean no ball gowns or anything ) Also you look great! Hope the interview went well too!
  15. That's so great! I did that too this year and would say it's a really great way to become comfortable with patients. I'll be crossing my fingers hoping a spot opens up!!
  16. Having interviewed for jobs in the legal field through the arts field, I would say that the grad school interview is on the more casual side, and that a cardigan is definitely acceptable attire. I also love the blazer i have thats made out of french terry cloth - http://www.zappos.com/p/tart-essential-blazer/product/8069164, very comfortable but looks like a blazer. My other suggestions is to not overthink it, and wear something you are comfortable in and you've worn a couple times, you don't really need another thing to worry about on the day of the interview!
  17. Happy to answer questions re. the director, though, I'm not sure how much help I'll be :-)
  18. Hey Ladies and Gents, I know we're still waiting on CSU-Stanislaus, but wanted to mention I live nearby and can help with commutes (and maybe a bed), and am happy to do so whether I get an interview or not :-). Plus I shadowed the director of the program and her colleagues, and have connections within the hospital she works at.
  19. Ditto. It really does seem like they just put everyone on the waitlist...
  20. Yes, mine went to final review today. I'm wondering if we are on a waitlist for interviews or something?
  21. I'm starting to get concerned because I haven't heard from most of my schools and I know others have...Boston, Northwestern, Minnesota?
  22. I second the self-care thing, do something for yourself, to take care of your needs! It can feel really personal when schools reject you, but it might just have been the wrong timing for you! (the Augustana director wrote me last year after rejection that some of the best GCs he knows have had to go thru 2 or 3 application cycles...) Sending comforting hugs!
  23. Do you think maybe their looking for more doctor to patient like counseling maybe?
