  1. Yes, that's right. But my research (African and African-American comparative literatures) are only really written in English and French, so maybe I'm a special case.
  2. I shouldn't say *my program* because I'm not committed yet, but I'm likely going lol. It's Yale's comp lit program. We have to learn a classic or medieval language and three modern languages. I think one can be English, though. So I need to learn two more langs. I'm thinking German and Latin, according to what my professors told me, but I'm gonna wait until I get there to make any decisions.
  3. Lol my program requires reading proficiency four languages and essential fluency in three. ~~~fucked~~~
  4. My family doesn't seem to really grasp the concept. My father went to grad school for career reasons and didn't really have the "spirit of learning" that I do. They also think I'm going to English, but that's what most people think. When I correct that I am going for comparative literature, I can tell from their expression that they aren't committing that information to memory. Oh well. The university I go to is essentially a pipeline for academics and professional students, so it's not bizarre for me to go on to get a PhD. Nevertheless, I seem to be one of the only students I'm aware of to go straight through from undergrad to PhD.
  5. When I had my Penn interview, I asked the professors when I should hear back, and one of them responded later that day in an email saying around March 1 or 2. But this is for Comp Lit.
  6. I got an email late last night from the DGS. I was drunk when I got it so I deleted it by mistake lol #thirstythursday. Sometimes people find out a day or so before the others, so if you also applied, you may find out today. That happened with me for Berkeley too.
  7. I just got into the Comp Lit PhD at Yale! My top choice!
  8. I called them today and they said they didn't have my name on the list, and that they'd email me shortly, but I haven't heard anything and that call was like, at 10 am today... Still confused.
  9. I decided, at the behest of my boss, to not call them. Seems unnecessary, I'll just wait it out. Nothing seems to have changed on the ApplyWeb website, although I'm not sure what an acceptance or rejection would look like. The website just says "Submitted." Anyone gonna claim that Princeton acceptance on the boards? Congrats to the lucky person!
  10. How would you suggest I contact them? A call? Should I ask if the results will be submitted soon? Or if I specifically have been admitted?
  11. Good luck to you all! I'm waiting to hear back from Princeton, too! I also think Cornell will let people know today or tomorrow.
  12. Hello! I have heard back info from Stanford. I was invited to go there for a Visitor's Weekend at the end of January. I'm assuming this is a good sign, since they used the words congratulations and shortlist in the email. Yet, I don't know if this means that only people they are accepting are invited... I think it's more or less that they think I'll need some wooing to go there. But I don't know! They're not very transparent. I hope this helps. Stay strong!
  13. Yes, I just saw your post on the results board. I haven't heard anything either, and I am somewhat confused...they rejected people first? How bizarre.... I haven't had the same thing happen to me (with the disappearing files) but maybe it's a good sign....? Mine still says submitted, but it doesn't seem like we'll find out from ApplyWeb. The website says the faculty will contact us directly, and that also seems to be what happened to the two posters. Fingers crossed they'll let us know tomorrow?
  14. I'm glad you feel well tho. I'm waiting impatiently for news from them.
  15. I'm also very interested in narratives, but more or less the means by which sociological positionalities influence the ways we interact with and engage with narratives. So how do men read women's narratives (sometimes about the marginalization of women by men) and internalize that information, given that they can only understand so much of someon else's experiences. I suppose this is more of less an intersection of narratology and critical theory. I applied to ENS's International Selection for literary theory, but I doubt I'll do it, given I've already been admitted to Berkeley. The only thing that'd stop me from jumping straight from undergrad (I'm a senior rn) into a PhD is getting a Fulbright to get a French MA in Quebec. Fingers crossed for that!
  16. Has anyone else gotten an email scheduling an interview at UPenn? I'm wondering if this is good news (getting through a preliminary examination) or just sort of routine?
  17. I did a study program, to get a Masters in French literature in Montréal. I'm a semifinalist, but I'm wondering what the process is for Canada... The website's not very clear.
  18. I use a variety of media. One chapters is about novels, another about novel to film adaptation. It's one of the reasons I'm somewhat nervous about my thesis defense. My methodology is mad unorthodox.
  19. Anyone applying to Canada (Quebec)? Do you guys know if there's an interview process?
  20. My writing sample was the introduction of (current) undergraduate thesis. It outlines the most prominent theorists on the topic of language in postcolonial African and contemporary African American literature and posits that we can better understand the production of cultural discourses (I'm really using a cultural studies methodology) about language in Sub-Saharan African and the United States through the ways that writers resist and manipulate language. My thesis is superrrr theory based, and my research interests are, no surprise, literary and cultural theory.
  21. Someone heard back from UChicago yesterday? The Humanities Division website says that POIs don't contact... so it's weird that they said the POI told them they were admitted... I'm the person who posted about Berkeley and Judith Butler. It was such a shock! I'm still waiting to hear back from Penn and Yale. @ThePomoHipster, it looks like we have applied to essentially all the same US programs with the exception of Duke. I also applied to Cornell an Princeton, though. Best of luck to everyone~
