You can find your own placement as long as your supervisor has a MSW or an equivalent degree  ( unlike u of t where the school matches you with an agency and your supervisor could be someone with only a BSW degree, I was actually matched to a crisis "call center" and then I just dropped out .lol  ) , but to be honest, the placement office is not the greatest and it doesn't really advocate for its students. If you are looking for a placement in hospitals then you may want to utilize your professional connection and network.

Eep. Thats kind of incredibly discouraging. I'm from Calgary so I would have no place to start or have any real networks established in Toronto. I guess that's what I was hoping for is to have the school help me navigate that process.

York wins !!! I learned so much about grassroots/critical social work there !!! Only after attending York, I have decided to pursue my career in medical profession so that I can gain more power to fight back the oppressive discourses imposed on marginalized/disadvantaged  individuals and communities. I would never considered go to medical school if I had gone to a clinical orientated MSW program. In fact, I dropped out from the  " Harvard of North" MSW program because I couldn't tolerate its pretentious " elite" institutional culture and the overtly  racist attitude towards colored students/staff.

Thats really interesting! I have never really seen myself as a "clinical" person so it helps to hear your experiences. What was the practicum process like and what kind of opportunities or agencies have students had?

I'm sorry to hear about your letter from Laurier - but I hope good news will come in the next few weeks for you from T.O!  I wanted to ask if it's ok - you didn't apply to Calgary?  It may be the program I go to (online) but I don't know much about Calgary...

I'm not too down about it. Just wanting to know so I can plan for the future! No I didn't apply because I felt the specializations for me aren't quite what I'm looking for in terms of courses an learning experience, i received a rehabiliation and disability studies degree and my bsw. just thought after 2 degrees from u of c, I feel I have fairly decent foundation of the human services sector here so I thought to diversify and try a new experience in a different city :D

I checked my mail today and I did not get into Laurier for the 1 year MSW :(. My one friend got wait-listed, but I have not heard from anyone who has received an acceptance from Laurier! It also stated that the stronger of the applicants had over 3500 hours or 2 years of experience. Good luck!

I had also gotten a rejection letter very early from Laurier and I live in Calgary. I definitely felt however that my experiences accumulated to over 3500 hours, even calculated it too. I applied to the advanced standing msw. Waiting on U of T, Ryerson and York still. So crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.
