  1. I recommend writing single-authored manuscripts in low to low-medium quality journals. You will undoubtedly get a couple of super mean reviews (one reviewer told me my writing was incomprehensible or even worse the horrible desk reject experience ) but nothing separates you from your peers like publishing low-impact manuscripts that nobody will ever read.
  2. Why wouldn't SSHRC just email everyone and save on operating costs (e.g. paying for Canada post and courier - seriously)?
  3. Congratulations! I broke down and emailed FGSR this afternoon too. I won a CGS which I am very lucky and thankful for. I said it earlier in the thread but to all those who didn't win: I lost last year. You can improve the CV and program of study and win it next year. Don't let this shake you up too much. Your time will come.
  4. I don't pretend to know your particular situation but I know that SSHRC prioritizes research and publications more than extra-curricular kind of stuff like Vanier does. For instance, I had a friend win Vanier without a single or co-authored publication.
  5. Got the news from my department that I won a fellowship but no details on which one. To those who weren't successful: I didn't win as a first-year Ph.D. last year. I was so upset for several days and felt completely rejected. To be honest, I had a bit of a breakdown. But I used the rejection to work my butt off and published 3 single-authored articles this year to increase my chances. So my advice: don't let this get to you too much. We're not supposed to win everything. Your time will come and you will win and it's ok to feel sad.
  6. I have the exact same thing on my screen, right under Create New Form.
  7. It depends on many factors including GPA, reference letters, publications, and program of study.
