That sounds so amazing! Did you study Korean studies in undergrad??

I'm crossing my fingers for you and hoping that you get it - would be awesome to see someone so passionate get this degree and put it to use!

@pengpolaruin  Thank you so much! That means a lot! Your project sounds incredible, and I'm very interested to hear your findings on ASD in Korea.  Although my degree was not in Korean studies (Web technology..doing quite the career jump!) I worked and ran several international programs in my university throughout my undergrad. I usually take the time to ask them what the biggest culture shock for them was.  I was surprised when someone answered with "how caring America is with the disabled" (more specifically with how buses are wheelchair accessible). It wasn't until I finally travel to Korea did I understand what she meant.

It seems like you and I were in Korea at the same time! I was in Seoul, though.

That's awesome! Have you heard of the NIIED scholarship? If Fulbright doesn't work out, you should really look at applying to that program.

@theanine I have! I actually got it for the one semester I was in Korea 3 years ago.

My concern is that 1) I received it before, will they let me have it again? 2) I was under the understanding that I need to be enrolled into a university in order to be eligible for the scholarship.  If I need to apply to the school beforehand I have everything in my application EXCEPT the $20,000 in my bank account.  I'm not sure if a Korean University will accept me or not because I do not have the funds. So I feel like I'm in a rut...

Someone told me before that they usually don't give out the NIIED scholarship to 1st world countries, and my chances are low. Not sure if that is true or not :(

If my fact are wrong PLEASE correct me!

Korea ETA. Last year I applied for Korea research, but didn't get it. Thinking my chances are better for ETA since I'm not in grad school yet, but who knows! After a year that's been full of rejection, one more wouldn't faze me at all. I'm going to Korea regardless so it's just a matter of how at this point. I just need a resolution to the uncertainty so I can finally ACT and nail my plans down for this year.

    What about you?

I applied for the Korean Studies Graduate Degree program.  I'm hoping to pair it with an International Education degree in the future and help Korean students when they study abroad here in America.  Also, there's not a lot of International Education opportunities in Maine, so I'm hoping to start some programs in my lifetime to change that.

This is kind of a one shot for me..if I don't get it I most likely wont be going due to $$$.

@pengpolaruin  @m1087 @lightaheadi Also drinking wine to pass these nights... I feel like the amount of spreadsheet checking and forum refreshing I'm doing is taking a serious toll on my health, lol. Maybe I'll limit myself to once per day? When all the Sub-Saharan African countries came out I lost it because I thought we would come in another wave.

I was sure it was going to be this week. But it seems like this is an abnormal notification period with all these inconsistencies.

I tried limiting myself but I'm losing ALL self control LOL!

Do any of you guys know whether the East Asia rep is even in this week? I think someone mentioned before that no one answered the phone today when they tried calling.

@m1087 I have not. The only thing I heard about him was from last week, when someone confirmed he was away.  Though he SHOULD be back by now.

During the application process I called to get some questions answered.  Out of my 6 calls, I only got a hold of him ONCE. He's super hard to get ahold of, and I assume during this time it's even worse.

Anyone else waiting on East Asia-Pacific and want to vent? I've been silently stalking this forum for awhile but it's gotten to the point where I just need an outlet for this stress!!! So confused about the previous notification dates, they seem all over the board, and Australia is the only one from our region that's been notified. Is it true that they are trying to notify everyone by April 1st, or was that just a hopeful rumor?

CONGRATS to everyone who has received good news, and for those who haven't, I'm so sorry-- I hope you will continue to work towards your goal, whether it is a project or teaching.

I currently cracking open a wine bottle. I'm so over this wait for East Asia.

Hi everyone! This is my first time posting, and I wanted to thank you all for the incredible amount of support you all provide each other on here. I didn't find this forum until late February, and I continuously checked it as I waited for my final notification. I applied to do research in Guatemala, and I was notified last Wednesday (3/15) that I am an alternate. It definitely hurt getting that dreaded alternate status because I am now only depending on a Public Policy Fellowship I applied for in DC. If I don't get that, I honestly don't know what I will be doing next year. I am currently a senior in undergrad, and I eventually plan on going to law school, but I knew I wanted to take a gap year so I didn't apply this year. Now, I think I'm regretting that... But I haven't lost hope yet! I'm probably going to apply to other programs like AmeriCorps and just pray that I get bumped up from alternate! :)

Good luck to everyone who still have yet to hear back!!!

I have been an AmeriCorps volunteer for the past 2 years now (first as a state/national and then as a VISTA).  Although it was my Plan C, it ended up being one of the best decisions of my life. Plus the AmeriCorps name has opened a lot of doors and resources to me I never knew existed.  Let me know if you have any questions!

  8. Welp its 5:30PM.  Another end to the insanity of constantly checking this forum, reddit, and Google doc, only for the insanity to begin again tomorrow.  Except tomorrows my birthday...

You know what would be a REALLY good birthday present Fulbright staff? *wink* *wink* *nudge* *nudge*

OK everyone so if waiting for Fulbright notifications is giving you intense anxiety like me... this video is incredibly inspirational and helps to put things in perspective.

"There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.”

I believe that with everything going on right now, especially after the news we received this morning, we need Fulbright now more than ever.

  10. After a week of hourly checks on this forum for Fulbright updates, I decided I would finally create a login.  I am currently waiting on an announcement for the Korean studies graduate degree grant..crossing my fingers Korea will be announced soon!

In the meantime checking reddit, the google doc, and this forum helps keep my sanity (semi) in check.  I found this post on Twitter the other day and when ever someone asks me how I'm doing I just show them this :D
