  1. Same here. Most of my friends use it except a select few. Haha.
  2. I got accepted to both my choices but my Plan B was to keep finding international jobs on LinkedIn and hoping for the best. Now that I have turned down both universities (due to the high tuition and my family having to work extra hard to fund me - they finally agreed to support me but it was past the deadline), I'm going to start all over again with my grad school hunt but if I get a decent-paying job along the way I might cancel grad school or do an online Masters as I work.
  3. 1) Singer-Songwriter (did a year of training at the California College of Music for this and despite an EP and single on iTunes and tons of unpaid performances here and there, I'm still struggling but I'll keep going forward with music while I look for day jobs that I still like 2) Advertising Exec/Art Director (this is kinda what I'm trying to get a Masters in - I need to gain new skills in this and to network) 3) TV Screenwriter/Producer (had a screenwriting background and would like to be one of those powerful women who revolutionize the TV industry) 4) Best-selling fiction novel writer
  4. Hi 3dender and thelionking. Thanks so much for all your input. You both did provide great insights. All I need is any job offer after my Masters and I'm all set for a work visa in the States. I'm also in the process of applying for an O1 visa meant for those in the media/music/sports/film industry since I'm actively doing music and social media writing so I hope one of these options work out. I've come to a decision that I'll be okay with going wherever the work is, be it in the States, Aussie, Singapore or where I am in Jakarta (Indonesia). I guess it's all down to my preferred university. Since NYU costs way too much, I might go with Melbourne University and see where that takes me (gonna be actively applying to jobs on LinkedIn and hope for the best). I still have USC and the UK as an option though (a 1-year Masters seems right for me given my family's budget) so I'll remain positive. Once again, thank you both for helping me out.
  5. I've studied and lived in both Australia and the States (though I was in LA back then so I'm totally clueless about NY). The Masters I'll be doing is Digital Media, which is heavily focused on marketing, publishing, communication and branding. I have 2 days left to accept or decline NYU's offer. Given I'm on a budget, the NYU tuition and living costs are definitely pricey (my parents are funding me and I don't really want them to pay that much for a Masters - I'm an international student so there are working restrictions for me). The University of Melbourne, on the other hand, is a shorter program. It's where all my friends went for their Bachelors and I've been to the buildings so many times that I'm loving the vibe (I was studying at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology that time, which was just a short distance away from Unimelb). Plus I'm looking for a permanent residence and as much as I would love to work in the States, Australia has an easier path towards a PR (I was given a chance at it when I completed my B.A. but didn't take it and now I feel like I should give it another go). NYU offers internships with magazines and media companies like Elle, Oprah Magazine and Google though, while Unimelb has connections with Lonely Planet. I keep going back and forth between the two. So do you think I should move forward with NYU or Unimelb? Thanks in advance for the advice.
  6. 2 universities for me, and both are in NY. One charged $50 and the other cost me $150. None required GRE though but due to the program length being 2 years (my family would rather have me do an accelerated 1-year Masters) I would have to decline both offers & apply to a couple programs in Cali that match my interest so I would have to take the GRE for those, unless I'm ok with the UK.
  7. We're on the same boat here. I'm also having a hard time deciding between USC and NYU. NYU offered me a spot in the MS Publishing: Digital and Print Media program but I plan on applying to USC's Digital Media MS, which only runs for a year. If I decline NYU, then I'd have to make sure I really get in to USC's program. Not sure I want to spend 2 years at NYU for a Masters that can be done somewhere else for 10 months, but the thing about LA is I don't really drive - the reason I pick it is because I used to live there & most of my friends are still around so I have no choice but to overcome my driving anxiety. All the best with the decision-making.
  8. Hi. I got accepted to the New School for a Media Studies MA. From the accepted grad students group on FB, the Creative Writing students seem excited, and it definitely looks like a great program based on the curriculum on the site (I once considered applying for it before deciding Media is for me - still waiting on USC though). Heard Sarah Lawrence offers a specialized class in sci-fi/fantasy writing as part of the program, and that might interest you if you're into the genre.
  9. Hi cleveland1898. I'm actually looking at USC Annenberg for a Masters in either Digital Social Media or Specialized Journalism (the Arts). For Specialized Journalism, we're supposed to aim for 151 on the Verbal section (don't worry about the maths - this is what the advisor told me). Digital Social Media doesn't mention a minimum GRE score. As far as I know, Columbia's Strategic Communications program (which I've considered doing) doesn't require a GRE. For minimum scores, I think it's best to email the specific department you want to apply to. All the best.
