  1. Just to piggyback on this discussion, what do you guys think about letters of recommendations from industry? Is there a criteria for that as well, or is it just not recommended at all?
  2. Thanks for the response! Is it safe to say that I should stay mostly in the 10-25 range of USNews schools? And yes, I've realized that deep learning is not very prevalent in the mid-tier schools, so I've been having some trouble with that. I've also been looking at the PhD in Machine Learning, but my CS background is good but not great and I wasn't sure about how that would translate over in getting into academia. I mainly want to be a professor and teach with some research on the side as a goal.
  3. Hello, I'm going to be a second year master's student in statistics in the upcoming Fall, and I want to apply to PhD's in statistics. At this point, I think I want to go into academia with a focus on machine/deep learning. Some concerns with my application is that my math background is not the greatest, and my master's GPA is a little bit lower than it should be. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated! Undergrad Institution: Top 30 USNews Public Major(s): Statistics, Economics Minor(s): Hispanic Literature and Cultures GPA: 3.79 (Major GPA 3.82) Graduate Institution: Stanford GPA: 3.87 Type of Student: Domestic Asian Male GRE General Test: 169Q/160V/5.5AWA (TBD on Math subject test, but I'm not too confident in it) Research Experience: I have an Economics undergraduate thesis that dealt with NLP and econometric modeling. I'm doing research at Stanford working on convex optimization. My current internship deals with deep learning related to MRI data. Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Undergraduate highest honors in economics Pertinent Activities or Jobs: I currently do some analytics for the women's basketball team in season. My current internship, as said before, deals with deep learning related to healthcare. Letters of Recommendation: One undergraduate economics professor, the professor I'm doing research under at Stanford, and my supervisor at my current internship. They should be good Undergraduate Courses: Probability (A), Linear Algebra (B), Statistical Theory/Inference (B), Calc 3 (A), Discrete Math (A-), Econometrics (A-), Stochastic Processes (A), Time Series (A), Diff EQ (A), R Programming (A), Object Oriented Programming (A), Optimization (A) Graduate Courses: Real Analysis (A-), Statistical Inference (A-), Machine Learning (A), Theoretical Bayesian class (A+), Applied Bayesian class (A-), Measure-theoretic Stochastic Processes (B+), Advanced R class (A), Convolutional Neural Networks for Computer Vision (A), Regression Modeling (A) I also plan on taking advanced regression modeling and proof-based linear algebra this upcoming fall. Program: PhD in Statistics School List: I have no idea how my profile stacks up due to my lack of math background, and I'm not sure which schools to apply to. I also feel my current list is way too top-heavy. Stanford Berkeley Harvard Washington CMU PSU Columbia OSU UCLA UT Austin UC Davis UCSB Maybe Cornell Any feedback is much appreciated
  4. Recent undergrad at a Top 30 school w/ a major in Stats and Econ. 3.78 GPA. 161V 169Q 5.5W. I did an undergrad research thesis that did pretty well. My letters of rec were very good. I also have extensive experience outside of classes and a pretty clear direction w/ why I want to pursue an MS in stats, which I think helped my profile tremendously (my stats are to me, just ok) Good luck in your app process!
  5. wow got admitted into Stanford's MS program. I'm happy beyond words
  6. Some PSU results are up, but i still haven’t gotten any emails
  7. Seeing results for UW Masters... Are these the same as the MS program? Or remnant PhD people? There isn’t anything up on my check app status, and its making me nervous
  8. Just got waitlisted for the MS for Chicago. Gives me a bad feeling about all of my other applications
  9. I applied to their MAS if that counts. Applied to 10 schools and haven't heard back from any
  10. I guess no new Chicago MS acceptances today. Could they just be PhD people who got rejected but got an MS offer?
  11. My GRE score is not very good, but I am going to retake it in a few weeks with a little more practice, and it should be better. But what are my chances for masters programs at my schools? Undergrad Institution: UNC Chapel Hill Major(s): Statistics, Economics Minor(s): Hispanic Literature and Cultures GPA: 3.79 (Major GPA 3.82) Type of Student: Domestic Asian Male GRE General Test: 164Q/158V/5.5AWA (Had a technical difficulty in the first non-writing section, which kinda messed me up, but am retaking in two weeks) Research Experience: Wrote undergraduate thesis Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Highest Honors Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Not really, a couple random positions Letters of Recommendation: Two senior Economics people (Should be very good), Stats professor (Ok) Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I haven't taken real analysis, but I've taken Probability (A), Linear Alegebra (B), Statistical Theory (B), Calc 3 (A), Discrete Math (A-), Econometrics (A-), Stochastic Modeling (A), Time Series (A), Diff EQ (A), Intro to Data Science (A), Object Oriented Programming (A), Applying to: MS Statistics/M of Applied Stats Schools: Stanford Berkeley Washington Chicago Michigan Ohio State Penn State Virginia UCLA Florida Florida St
  12. Hey guys, so I recently graduated, and I'm thinking about applying for an MS in applied stats for Fall 2018 as a backup plan if jobs don't end up well. I just want to learn applicable skills without worrying too much about the underlying theory. Here's my information Undergrad Institution: Top 5 Public School in US Major(s): Statistics, Economics Minor(s): Hispanic Literature and Cultures GPA: 3.79 Type of Student: Asian Male GRE General Test: Haven't taken GRE. (Idk if this is applicable but my SAT is 780/770/780) Research Experience: Wrote undergraduate thesis Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Highest Honors Pertinent Activities or Jobs: Not really, a couple random positions Letters of Recommendation: Two senior Economics people, and maybe one from a stats PhD candidate Any Miscellaneous Points that Might Help: I haven't taken real analysis, but I've taken Probability (A), Linear Alegebra (B), Statistical Theory (B), Calc 3 (A), Discrete Math (A-), Econometrics (A-) What programs would be best for applied stats with my profile?
