Who are you hoping to work with at NYU?
-
Congrats. What is your focus?
-
I noticed that...they call it “Jerry’s World.”
-
I have UT Arlington on my list fornthat exact reason, cost of living. Big cities are expensive and unfortunately not as welcoming as they used to be. I grew up in NYC and I worry about moving back to finish school, especially with a family.

$900/ month is not on par with major cities unless you are talking small town major city. NY, LA, Boston...you’d be lucky to find a studio for twice that amount. MN sounds like a great place to live and go to school.

@khigh I wish you all the luck in the world as well. I’m sure it will work out no matter what. Clearly you know what you want. And if it doesn’t, don’t get discouraged, try, try, and try again. Good luck

Well that sucks...

Hi, Just curious, why not apply to Southern New Hampshire’s MA history program?
-
Great advice. I wish someone would have given me this advice earlier when i entered MA program
-
Hi, thanks! That is interesting and I will look into it. Appreciate your time and advice.

Hi all, just throwing this out there because I see some really good advice being giving in this forum. I've done my research and I have some good ideas about the schools I want to apply to but I was hoping to see if there is anything I may have missed. I am a interested in 20th century African American history, specifically how the Cold War, mass incarceration and neo-liberalism has affected the civil rights movement. I also have broad interests in social movements, radicalism and slavery in US history. My question is, does anyone have any suggestions on programs that might be good fits? I have done my own research and have a list of schools and POIs but I just want to see if I may have overlooked any programs. This is for a Ph. D program. Thanks.

Hi, We are very similar but my interests focus around the cold war, neo-liberalism and mass incarceration on the post-WW 2 civil rights movement. And I also have a family to consider but we are willing to move. The schools I am looking at are Rutgers, Columbia, NYU, UC Berkeley, UCLA, and PSU. Good luck,

How important is it to develop a relationship with you POI during the application process? I've heard from a few but I have not heard from more...that concerns me. Should I apply anyway and hope for the best? Any advice will be appreciated.

Thanks for the response. So, it is really about LORs, SoP, and writting sample? As for a writting sample, I am planning on submitting a research paper that I am presenting at a Grad conference later this year. My LOR's seem solid. But for the SOP, should I be as specific as possible for each institution?

Hi, Simple question. My GRE V is 158, writing, 4.5, Q....I am applying to History Ph.d programs this fall, my current gpa in my MA program is 4.0. I am considering re-taking the GRE again (and studying this time). With my current scores, what schools, based on ranking, could I apply too and have a half decent shot at getting accepted? Mid-rank, lower ranked schools? Thanks

Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for the encouraging words. I have to say SNHU has been great and I've recieved a ton of support there, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed as I move forward.
-
Thanks. That all make sense. I was just tood that some programs may still have a bias against online programs
-
I didnt notice it was psychology only. Sorry to intrude.
-
Will attaining your MA in history from an online program, like SNHU, affect your chances of getting into a phd program?
-
My interest is History. I'm looking at a number of schools, PSU, UCLA, JHU, CUNY Grad ctr, to name a few... My concerns are my GREs, they are good but I could probably do better. So I will retake. I also attend an online program, SNHU. It has been great as far as I can tell. But I worry about the stigma of online programs and if that will be a negative on my app. I've been looking for opportunities to do research outside of my class work and hooefully have something of substance published before app season begins.
