  1. There were invitations sent out Friday and yesterday/today. I'm waiting to hear back too. Trying not to lose hope yet as there may be more to come. I think most programs make decisions within the specific home areas.
  2. Still no interviews. Getting nervous and disappointed. GPA 3.94 V/Q/W (158,161,4.0) lots of research experience including Amgen Scholars.
  3. Have there been many UCSF BMS interview offers sent? Anyone else? I've only seen one on here.
  4. Vanderbilt meets every Monday and sends out interview offers the next Tuesday for each week in December.
  5. Awesome! Can't wait. I am applying cancer biology!
  6. Hi all! I am curious as to what textbooks are good to have for someone conducting their Ph.D. in cell and molecular biology? What books do you all like. To start, Alberts Molecular Biology of the Cell and Lehninger Principles of Biochemistry are two books I use and reference all the time.
  7. This summer I participated in the Amgen Scholars Program and both the Director of Undergraduate Research at Harvard and the Provost of Research at UCLA advised against emailing faculty. They both explained that faculty get so many emails and that it is more appropriate to email faculty after being accepted into the program.
  8. Undergrad Institution: Top state school in California Major(s): Biochemistry Minor(s): NA GPA in Major: 3.93 Overall GPA: 3.94 Position in Class: top 5% Type of Student: domestic, white male GRE Scores: practice test (hoping to improve before I take for real in September) V: 155 Q: 160 W: 4 Research Experience: Amgen Scholar at UCLA for the summer in cancer biology and metabolism. Two years at my home institution in natural products chemistry. Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Undergraduate Research Award - American Society of Pharmacognosy Outstanding First Year Biochemistry Student and Award in Computational Chemistry (home institution) Chemistry Faculty Scholarship at my home institution Pertinent Activities or Jobs: RA for two years. TA for general chemistry (multiple quarters) Grader for biochemistry Special Bonus Points: I'm trilingual. 3 poster presentations 1 oral presentation Possible publication in Cell depending on how the summer wraps up. (PI is pretty confident!) Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: Letter of rec from UCLA mentor in Department of Molecular and Medical Pharmacology Two letters of rec from home institution (one of them is my research advisor; she did her Postdoc at Stanford if that means anything) Applying to Where: Stanford - Biosciences - Cancer Biology UCSF - BMS - Cancer Biology UCLA - Biosciences - Cancer biology UCSD - Cancer Biology Vanderbilt IGP - Cancer Biology University of Arizona - Cancer Biology
  9. My research interests are cancer metabolism and oncogene regulation. My summer experience at UCLA looks at transcriptional regulation of important genes in the glycolytic cycle in metastasizing cells. My background in natural products chemistry introduced me to many tools in molecular biology; CRISPR, Gibson assembly, biobricks, etc. as well has LCMS techniques. Though these experiences seem random at first glance, I think they have definitely prepared me for an interdisciplinary approach when studying cancer biology.
  10. Hi all. I am starting to look into programs to apply to that start Fall 2018. Based on my stats, do you think I have a chance at programs such as UCSF Tetrad, Stanford Biosciences, Vanderbilt, etc? I just want to know now before I waste time/money if my chances aren't great. Thanks! I also plan on applying to the NSF Research Grant this fall as an undergraduate. Any pointers for this? Undergrad Institution: Top state school in California Major(s): Biochemistry Minor(s): NA GPA in Major: 3.93 Overall GPA: 3.94 Position in Class: top 5% Type of Student: domestic, white male GRE Scores (revised/old version): I am taking a GRE prep course this summer and will take the GRE at the end of the summer. Research Experience: Amgen Scholar at UCLA for the summer in cancer biology and metabolism. Several poster presentations. Two years at my home institution in natural products chemistry. No publications, but I did a couple poster presentations and won a research award. Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Undergraduate Research Award - American Society of Pharmacognosy Outstanding First Year Biochemistry Student and Award in Computational Chemistry (home institution) Chemistry Faculty Scholarship at my home institution Dean's List all three years. 11. Hi all. I couldn't find a page for 2018 yet, so I thought I'd tack on my stats here. I am starting to look for programs to apply to in the fall and was wondering if Stanford Biosciences and UCSF Tetrad would be a stretch. Let me know what y'all think. Thank you!
