  1. Spanish rolls ... yum!
  2. I haven't thought of any summer plans yet, aside from working up 'till a week before I leave to grad school. My boss tells me I need to get a replacement too. But I think I'll just continue driving around this lovely community I'm living in right now. I'll be carless in grad school, so I'll definitely be driving my car as much as I can!

  6. The Greeks are in the College Ave campus, so if that's your kind of setting then you should be okay with living there. Douglass, I don't really have much info about. I must say though, that the nice places for graduate housing are either in Busch campus, or actually off-campus.

  8. Johnson & Johnson is in New Brunswick, plus there's some other big pharmaceutical companies closer to New Brunswick than Philadelphia (Merck comes to mind). I dunno if pharmaceuticals is the industry you're interested in, but being in NJ is good in terms of that industry. I don't think you'll have a problem going into pharmaceuticals whether you attend Tulane or Rutgers. But maybe you should ask schools the admit rate of their students in the industry, i.e. how successful are their graduates in entering the industry, and what type of industry they're admitted in?

  17. I'm in the same situation as the OP, although I'm not sure what type of loan he/she is paying for. I am paying for susbsidized Stafford loans through Nelnet. The website states that deferment is primarily available if you are currently attending a school, or will be attending one within the next 90 days, in at least a part-time status. So I'll probably wait until the last week of May or early June before applying for deferment.
  18. There's this one professor who was a member of the adcom of School X. I read his CV and it turns out he was previously part of School Y. So my question is, can I ask him about his opinion for both School X and Y, because I'm seriously considering both schools at this time? Or would he have a biased opinion and probably say more positive things on School X than School Y? Thanks in advance! And I pressed enter too quickly when typing this topic. Hopefully no one else has read my nonsensical first posting.
  19. ^ Wayyy advanced happy birthday to ya! I'll be working. And I'd probably be judging a middle school science fair. What I won't be doing, definitely, is filing taxes.

    Cleveland, OH

I'm wondering if there are any new opinions on Cleveland (on transportation, safety, cost of living, where to find housing), as the replies upthread are two years old. Thanks for the responses.
  21. I missed this. Anyone know how it went?
  22. I still have to read the whole article, but I did start with "Since I was a little..." in basically all my SOPs, and I got two acceptances so far. I guess it's what I wrote in the next sentences/paragraphs that mattered to them. But I must say in my last interviews (by phone, although no word yet from this school), my interviewers looked at the parts in my SOPs that were more interesting to their field.
  23. only-time, do you remember in the application, it asks you to list the top 10 people you'd like to meet? Do you remember if you were able to talk with your top choice in your phone interview (assuming you got one)? If yes, maybe you should consider giving that person an e-mail to ask more about their academia? Or if not, then maybe you should post your question to whoever gave you a phone interview. Although it doesn't matter if you got a phone interview from them or not. I'll just advise you to look at the faculty of the concentration you're most interested in, pick the person whose research most interests you, then give them a call/e-mail and ask your question. Or are you more interested in getting the academia info from the grad students? In some of the faculty description, they might have a list of their current grad students, post docs, etc. You're lucky if those people will have their contact info attached to their names. You might have to do a deeper research if that's not the case.
  24. I'm turning 24 a few weeks before class starts, wherever that may be.
