2019 Canadian SLP Thread
HopefulSpeechie2018 replied to SpeechPlease's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Hey! My cumulative gpa was around a 3.8 and sub gpa was around 3.85. I had about 200 hours working with a SLP at a preschool speech and language clinic, and about 75 hours working with adults with aphasia. I also had some research experience working in a cognitive neuroscience lab that focused heavily on language. I know multiple of my friends who are in the program with me right now who had lower gpa's as well as less hours so definitely don't get discouraged if you feel like you may be lacking in either area. They really do look for overall well-rounded candidates, and in my opinion (also based on some of my classmates' stats that I've heard) your volunteer experience is more important than your gpa! -

Hey everyone! I am currently in my first year of SLP at Western and loving it. I also got into UofT and got an interview at McMaster but was ultimately not accepted there. If anyone has any questions, feel free to let me know! -

https://www.ouac.on.ca/guide/orpas-program-requirements/ I found this link to be helpful in weighing my chances at the different Ontario schools. It shows you how many people applied vs how many seats are available and some general information about the programs. I'm not sure if there is a website that exists comparing all schools, though. Not that I have come across anyways.- 458 replies

I had a cumulative GPA of 3.83 and a subGPA of 3.89 and was accepted at both Western and Toronto. I know people who have been accepted with GPAs that are quite a bit lower than that though who had great volunteer experience so they definitely look at a combination of both!- 458 replies

Did anyone else who applied to Western just get an email reminding you to activate your Western Identity even though you already did so? Just wondering if this was a reminder email that went out to all applicants or if I somehow did something wrong when activating my Western Identity months ago and I need to activate a new one. Thanks!- 458 replies

I don't think they explicitly state an average GPA on their website or anywhere, but by the looks of past forums I think the average for U of T is around a 3.8-3.85. I know people who have gotten in there and other places with GPAs lower than this, but it just depends on your SLP volunteer experience as well!- 458 replies

McMaster invites anyone of Indigenous background to their interviews (https://srs-mcmaster.ca/slp-admissions/#1491934523574-b42a1edc-1fa4) and then from there you will be considered among all other applicants based on your GPA and interview scores. I'm not sure about the other schools though!- 458 replies

https://www.ouac.on.ca/guide/orpas-dates/ from reading past years forums is seems that right at midnight they update ORPAS with acceptances, and you won't be contacted before then- 458 replies

Hey @SLPletsgo! My top choice is definitely Western, followed by U of T and then McMaster. This is mainly because of how close Western is from where I live (only about 2 hours away, whereas McMaster is 3 hours and Toronto is about 4 hours). I'm also really interested in working with children, especially children with autism, and I have heard from many that Western has more opportunity to work with children (including their own autism research lab!!) while Toronto is more adult-oriented. I'm not sure what McMaster is like in terms of the clinical populations they tend to work with since it is so new, but it also seems like a great school from what I saw when I went for the interview, just the fact that it is not yet accredited has slightly deterred me from wanting to go there. I would be thrilled to be accepted to any school though!- 458 replies

McMaster seems like a great school! Going to Hamilton for the interview was the first time I'd ever been there and it seems like a really nice city, but I'm also hesitant about the program not being accredited yet. Congrats on the acceptances you already have!!- 458 replies

That's good to know! I didn't apply to Alberta only because of how far it is from my hometown (I'm from southern Ontario), but I would prefer a clinically based program over a research based program as well.- 458 replies

These next few weeks waiting to hear back from Ontario schools will be the death of me. Such a long waiting process! While we wait, what is everyone's top school choice and why? In the unlikely event that I get accepted to multiple schools (wishful thinking), it would be really nice to know what you all think of each program!- 458 replies

I received an email from them on Thursday March 1st which took me by surprise because they said offers would be sent out on March 2nd. I read through a lot of these forums from last year and people said they also received emails if they weren't offered an interview so I would call if you haven't heard anything yet!- 458 replies

Hmm, yeah I'm a bit confused as well. I still haven't received the email that they said I would but I will let you know if I do and if there is any sort of student ID or portal provided. I feel much better just knowing they received my application though!- 458 replies

I called this phone number (416) 978-6614 and explained the situation. All they required was my OUAC reference number, name, and birthday and they were able to tell me that they have received my application and should be receiving email confirmation this week.- 458 replies

They said they receive applications on a "rolling" basis, not all at once, and they just received mine on the 11th so I should be getting the email with my ID within the next week. Hope this helps anyone else in the same position as I was!- 458 replies
