Hi! I also got into Laurier 2 year on campus and can relate to this so much. I am definitely accepting but it is really expensive!! Do you know if there are any scholarships etc that we may qualify for? Going to try and go that route if possible. Plus OSAP

I haven't found anything yet! It looks like Laurier offers admission scholarships for those with top grades, but you would have already been notified about that I think. I'm going to keep digging though...

Thank you you too!! And yes 100% I feel the same way! I am actually going to call this morning and see if there is an option to defer the acceptance by a year. I'm just finishing up my undergrad and I'm already in a bit of debt and experienced a bit of burn out. I'm hoping to work for a year to relieve some of the financial burden and just take it easy before beginning the two year trek ahah

Let me know what they say! I know U of T allows deferrals, but it doesn't like Laurier does. That would be the ideal situation for me LOL

Hey! I was also accepted (I am on the waitlist for UofT)  so I'm planning on waiting until closer to the day to accept it. I was wondering what you are referring to when you say you have to figure out how to pay for everything. Do you mean the deposit?

No just how to pay for school in general! I have some savings + OSAP, but it's hard not working for two years. I just got a really good job a few months ago that I wasn't expecting to get, so for the first few days after I was accepted at Laurier I was debating declining. I'm about 95% sure I'm going to go to school, I just need to get comfortable with all of the scary financial stuff that comes with it.

    *Also, congrats!!

For those of you that have been accepted to Laurier’s 2 year msw, what was the deadline you have to accept or decline the offer? Also, who will be accepting and declining their offer? Just want to have an idea if their will be any movement for those on the waitlist.

    Hi!

The deadline for me to accept is April 24th, and I was offered a spot on April 3rd (so three weeks)... I'm pretty sure I will be accepting, just trying to figure out how I'm going to pay for everything. I've seen a couple of people who are going to decline though, so hopefully there is movement!

The website says: "Once admitted to the program, students participate fully in the placement planning process which begins immediately upon their acceptance to the Faculty of Social Work. The Field Education Office communicates with the students upon acceptance to the program and provides a detailed outline of the placement planning and matching process."

I have accepted my offer and I've already received a couple of different emails but nothing about placements yet. I will definitely let you know if I get an email regarding potential placement agencies. It sounds like you can even propose an agency if there is somewhere you have in mind.

Thank you!! I will put my thinking cap on...

Is there anyone here who has been accepted to Laurier and was put on UofT's 2 year Wait list? I read on LORIS that we need to accept/decline by April 24th but I am worried about accepting and then getting admitted into UofT. I am wondering if anyone else is in this situation. UofT is my ultimate goal but I am very excited about getting into Laurier as well!

I think if you accept at Laurier, pay your deposit, then later get accepted to U of T, you can cancel your acceptance at Laurier and lose your deposit? (hopefully the deposit is small)

I would call Laurier and ask what happens if you accept and then change your mind. I would be interested to know as well... I have a great (permanent) job and I feel weird quitting to go back to school and get into debt, but its my dream to get my MSW so I'll probably take the less financially sound route LOL. Got to follow your dreams right??

This is my first time posting, but have been reading and participating from afar...

I just found out over the last 2 hours that I got into UofT (2 year full time) AND Laurier (2 year full-time)!!!!

my ACORN was never updated, I thought I had been rejected. Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted, and to all those still waiting HAVE FAITH- I can 100% relate.

    That's amazing! congrats!

Do you know which school is your first choice? That would be a hard (but great) decision!

  8. Hi everyone!

I got accepted to Laurier!! (two year in person). I was at the doctors office when I got the email and burst into tears... I think everyone around me was very weirded out by me haha. I got the email at 2:55pm and my last name starts with an F, if that matters at all (I feel like it's just absolutely random).

Just some really brief background on me: I have a B+ average in my last 10 credits, about 8000 hours of related experience (half of which was paid), and A- in my research methods course. I think I had strong references and was very happy with my written statement, considering that it was limited to 1000 words. I'm happy to go into more detail about my application incase anyone would like to know!

Also FYI I was waitlisted for U of T for 2018 and when I applied in 2015.

Good luck everyone waiting for that email! It's coming!!

Same! Just got the letter in the mail and I live in downtown Toronto.  I was waitlisted in 2015 so this comes as no surprise.

Same for me! I live downtown, was waitlisted in 2015, and was waitlisted again for 2018 at U of T.

I'm a little upset about it, but my first choice is Laurier so I'm trying to find solace in that. I also got a really good job in public health about a month ago, and I think that I can be happy to stay there for a little while.

Here is some background for future applicants or fellow wait-listers:

My grades from undergrad weren't amazing, and I had to go back after I graduated to get some more social science credits (my degree is in something pretty unrelated)... my average is a B+. In my research course I an A-, but I don't have very much paid research experience. I didn't have any academic references, just employment.

I also went back and got a certificate in Solution Focused Counselling from OSIE (I thought that would also help round out my marks, but I guess not!!)

I have about 8000 hours in a related field, and about half of those hours came from direct work with vulnerable families in a case management environment.

I thought my written statement was really great (especially when comparing it to my application in 2015), and my references were also stronger.

For everyone who was rejected or waitlisted for the first time this year... don't give up! In hindsight, being waitlisted in 2015 was actually really great for me. It gave me the opportunity to stay in a job I loved for another 2 years, and to get more financially stable. It also gave me an opportunity to really clarify what I want in my career.

It sucks now, but just keep looking for that silver lining and stay positive!

I won't be accepting my spot on the waitlist, so thats one less person to compete with for an opening!

*Edited to say that I didn't have an ACRON account set up, so I can't tell if it's updated or not.

    So...:

I just checked my ACORN this morning and saw...

    INVITED!!!

UoT is my dream school and I am in serious disbelief I got accepted.

    Congrats!!!! That's so amazing!

Thank you for updating - I couldn't figure out how to set up my ACORN so I'll be checking the mail twice a day now LOL

    hi there!

Does anyone know how long the waitlists are for 2 year MSW at UofT, York, or Laurier? Someone on here mentioned that the UofT waitlist is relatively short - is this true?

    Thanks in advance!

When I applied in 2015 I was waitlisted at U of T, and they said there were 75 people on the waitlist (for the 2 year program, not sure about 1 year)

*Edit - I should have read to the end of the page. sorry to duplicate!

Who else in the 2-year U of T applicant pool is a) experiencing a tremendous amount of vicarious excitement watching all of our Advanced Standing peers receive invitations (congratulations, all!!), and b) secretly hoping/willing that this year's results announcements follow the 2015 and 2016 timelines, when us folk started hearing back in early March?

Yup! Feeling the same.... I can't access ACRON for some reason so I'm checking my mail more frequently than normal, even though I know I'm weeks away from getting any mail hahaha

Did they ever tell you what place you were on waitlist? For those of us who might get waitlisted- is it worth calling admissions to try and find out our place on the list, or are they not able to let us know?

    Hey!

I was waitlisted for the 2 year MSW at U of T for fall of 2015.... I seem to remember that there is not 'place' or 'standing' on the waitlist, but that they consider it holistically. For example, if you are waitlisted have a lot of experience in community development,  and someone with similar experience who was accepted turns down the offer, they may look to offer you their spot. And if someone with more clinical experience turns down their offer, they will look for someone else on the waitlist who has that type of experience/ application. (I think.... I'm trying to remember is someone from the school told me that at an info session, or if I read it on the board a few years ago)

I’m in the same boat as you. My average isn’t as competitive as it could be; but I’m still holding out hope because I feel that I have a decent amount of experience for my age. You seem like you have a ton of experience. So try not to sweat it :). It sounds very hopeful to me!

    Did you apply anywhere elSs?

I wanted to ask a few questions regarding the MSW program applicant criteria at Laurier.  I am so worried because my GPA was a B-B+ according to the table Laurier provides to calculate your average for the last 10 credits of University.  You see, I went back to school after a 10 year hiatus to complete my degree.  I did this after I had my 2 kids, was a single mother and worked full time which is why my marks aren't the greatest.  I then went on to take a post-graduate certificate at Conestoga and graduated with a 3.98 GPA after I completed my degree which had courses in interviewing, mentoring and coaching as well as working with diverse populations etc which are definitely related to the field.

I have been working in corrections in a number of roles for over 4.5 years (teaching anger management and substance abuse programs as well as being an officer) and also have volunteer experience in addictions, mental health and with high-risk youth.  My total experience hours are approximately 10 000 hrs in total.  I am older (in my 40's) and have significant life experience.  I also facilitate a Peer Support Group for those who suffer from PTSD.  I am confident that my experience and personal statement are strong but I am very concerned that my average isn't good enough.  I did not write about how I went back to school while I was working full time in my statement which may explain my B/B+ average as I believed that it would be self-explanatory in my resume as my education overlaps with my work experience but now I am worried that I should have expressed that more clearly.  I also didn't want to look like I was asking for sympathy as I don't believe that my personal struggles should impact a decision to be accepted or not.

I got the impression from attending the information night that they look for candidates that are well rounded with related work experience.  I did not get the impression that you needed an A average to get accepted as someone posted here earlier.  Perhaps I interpreted incorrectly.  Just wondering if you have any idea how things are weighted.  I thought I remembered them saying it was 25% academic, 25% references, 25% written statement and 25%work experience or something along those lines, basically that they don't weigh one area to be worth more than the other.

I'm probably worrying too much about things that are out of my control but I am so worried that I will be overlooked simply because of my mediocre average as I believe that my life/work experience is strong.

    Any thoughts...

Same here.... average grades (B/B+) but about 8,000 hours of experience. Whenever I'm feeling stressed out about my grades my husband reminds me that the strength of my application is my unique work experience, and that there is nothing I can do about the grades at this point (I finished my undergrad over 7 years ago.... I feel like I was a completely different person at that point in time LOL)

SW Sevante - I went to an info session I left with the exact same impression, which is why it was one of the schools I applied to. They seemed to really value work experience, compared to other programs I was considering that were very focused on grades. I remember the 25/25/25/25 description as well.

Good luck to all of us!!!

Anyone applying for Laurier's 2 year? The deadline is on Monday, and I feel so drained after all these applications, but the end is in sight!

I've applied to U of T and Laurier for the 2 year program. I just submitted my application to Laurier about an hour ago.... you can do it!
