2018 Neuroscience PhD Applicants and Admission Results
neuromemory replied to eevee's topic in Biology
They told all of us who interviewed at NYU this weekend to not expect any acceptances or rejections until early March, their committee doesn't meet for any of the interviewees until after the second weekend (which will be a little delayed this year because many of the med center labs are in the process of moving right now). It's my impression that if you have not been extended an interview invite yet, you are not going to be considered.- 286 replies

They historically don't send invites until the 2nd week of January at the earliest, so I wouldn't expect anything before then. Relatedly, anything new from UCLA, Berkeley, or MIT?- 286 replies

It was in reply to my email, not a mass rejection, but both of them said they were completely done reviewing all applications so if you haven't heard from them yet, you won't, unfortunately- 286 replies

I agree - I don't see how it could hurt to send a polite email their way. One nice side effect was that a few programs (UCSD, Columbia) sent me emails confirming that I didn't get an interview, so I know for sure to move on from those and focus on the amazing places I was offered them! Here's what I said in my email: To Whom it May Concern, My name is insert name here, and I am a recent applicant for the name of program PhD Program, application ID number XXXXX. I recently received my Fall 2017 semester grades, and I wanted to inquire if it was possible for these grades and their positive effect on my overall and major GPA to be reflected via an update to my application. My updated transcript is attached for your convenience. Thank you for your time. Best, My Name- 286 replies

I think it's really up to you, is a 3.9 significantly better than your overall GPA and/or make a reasonable impact on your major/overall? For me, a 4.1 was a good amount higher, it boosted both my overall from 3.72 to 3.77 and my major GPA since they were mostly high-level neuro courses, so I wanted it to factor in if at all possible. I don't see how it could hurt to email them, as long as you're not presumptuous about it- 286 replies

Hey all - as we know UCSD is completely done sending interviews but they just sent me an official rejection with: "Thank you for checking in. We have completed our application review and all notices for invitation have been sent. I regret to inform you that you were not selected to interview for our program" in response to me inquiring about adding Fall 2017 grades, so they're completely done. UCLA replied and added them to my dossier, so they're still in the review process. To my knowledge, MIT and Stanford both haven't sent out invites. No replies so far from Columbia (which is probably done), Harvard (which is completely done), or Berkeley. Hope everyone's holidays went well despite the stress, and to anyone caught in this snowstorm on the east coast, stay warm!- 286 replies

Hey all - does anyone know policies on sending Fall 2017 semester grades to anywhere? I did particularly well this semester (all A's and A+'s, which are rare at my institution, in both neuro and non-neuro courses), and figured it can't hurt for programs still evaluating my application to see those. For schools that don't have a way to include grade updates within the application, would it be odd to send an email to the program's contact person with them attached?- 286 replies

Does anyone know if UCSD, Berkeley, and Columbia are totally done? It looks like UCSD sent out rejection emails on the 27th last year, but I haven't gotten one of those yet. Feeling kind of down about them :/- 286 replies

I'm no expert either, but it's highly dependent on the school. It seems like most places send them in waves over a few-week period, somewhere like Harvard BBS is a notable exception where they send them all at once in a few-hour period. Based on last year's results thread, most of the schools on your list send them in waves. Basically, unless someone calls and asks if they're done sending out invites (and they say they are), you don't really know until the 2nd-3rd week of January, at which point you can assume they're done.- 286 replies

I heard from them extending an invite for interview unofficially on Tuesday via a phone call with the head of the committee on neurobiology, and officially via email on Wednesday.

Good to know they weren't all at once, last year was over a 2-week span so it seems likely this will be similar. Congrats!- 286 replies

To the people (saw two on the results page) with invites for Berkeley, did they say anything about it being in a single batch or if there's still more?- 286 replies

Oh yay a neuro-specific thread! I've been posting in the main one, so I'll put my updates here too. Heard back via call yesterday then email today for UChicago, and got an email invite for NYU today. UChicago's dates are EITHER Friday February 2nd: arrive Thursday afternoon (Feb 1st), depart Sunday (Feb 4th) OR Monday February 5th: arrive Saturday morning (Feb 3rd), depart Monday evening (Feb 5th), and they want a response by Dec 28th. NYU's are Thursday and Friday, January 25-26 or Thursday and Friday, February 15-16, and they want a confirmation by Dec 29th. Presumed rejection from Harvard PiN via no email on the 14th.- 286 replies

Invited to interview for NYU neuro! CNS and Sackler are now under the same program, so this interview is for labs in both. Email at 1:52pm, had my name (Dear neurmemory,) but no specifics about my app, so could easily have been a form letter. Their dates are Thursday and Friday, January 25-26 or Thursday and Friday, February 15-16, and they want a confirmation by Dec 29th. I'd been in contact with 4 of the professors there and toured a lab (I live uptown so it was pretty easy to do for me), so I had connections going in. From my understanding they do first round interview invites, first round rejections, and then another set of maybes they take a few more weeks on. Good luck all

Ah I didn't see that selection as tracks, just as areas of interest. I think the committee meets for everyone together though, so it's less distinct than say UChicago's divisions with different committee meetings. I chose systems, haven't gotten an email so far.
-
To my understanding MIT's BCS PhD is just one thing? Maybe you're thinking of a different program?
-
Yeah just got the same email and mini heart-attack too, likely went out to everyone who applied I'm guessing

Now for interview news, I was called around 11am this morning by the head of the Committee on Neurobiology at UChicago inviting me for an interview, first of the season! For those planning, their weekend is in two groups over the same weekend, Feb 1-3, or Feb 3-5. I had some extensive meetings with UChicago professors at SfN this year and met most of their faculty and all of the PIs I'm interested in there for a number of hours, so I was feeling pretty good about getting an interview. Official emails are coming out this week sometime. I didn't get a Harvard email last week either (though I did stupidly forget to fill out the supplemental app thing, so maybe that was part of it who knows). Good luck to all!

Hey all, been lurking here for a while and decided to post because I have some interview news! Undergrad Institution: Ivy, top 5 neuroscience programMajor(s): Neuroscience and BehaviorMinor(s): NoneGPA in Major: 3.79Overall GPA: 3.72Position in Class: Doesn't officially rank until the end but, top 1/4th at least? Dean's list 4 semesters. Type of Student: Domestic white femaleGRE Scores:Q: 159 (73rd percentile)V: 167 (98th percentile)W: 6 (99th percentile)Research Experience: 3 years of research experience in college, 2 with one PI (a little older), 1 with my current PI (a little younger but a rising star, very well-connected in the neuroscience world). Working on an independent project, was an Amgen Scholar this summer at my home institution with the same PI. Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Amgen Scholars Program (Junior summer), Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (Junior summer), Alumni Parent Internship Fund (Sophomore summer), Dean's List (4 semesters), Vice President of the Columbia Neuroscience Society, Peer Advisor for the Department of Psychology, full Student Member of the Society for Neuroscience, Primary Author - Columbia Student Research Symposium, Third Author - Society for Neuroscience Poster Session 2017Pertinent Activities or Jobs: None past researchAny Miscellaneous Accomplishments that Might Help: Have met with at least one PI from every school I applied to, mostly at SfN this year, one of my recs is from the head of the undergraduate neuroscience program and is glowing (rated me as one of the best students she'd ever worked with, I got to see this one), and my latest research rec should be really great too, first research PI rec should be good but not amazing. Special Bonus Points: Upward trend in my GPA, a number of A+'s on my transcript in neuro classes on both the bio and psych side. Heavily involved in mentorship/outreach leadership activities outside of the lab, all within science communication/awareness. Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter: Not really. I'm a current undergrad at one of the schools on my list, and I'm from the location of another and had a compelling personal statement around returning home for the program, so those should have a slightly higher chance of acceptance. Applying to Where: All schools are neuroscience PhD programsHarvard University - BBS - PiN MIT - BCS Columbia - Columbia Doctoral Program in Neurobiology and Behavior NYU - Doctoral Program in Neural Science University of Chicago - Graduate Program in Neurobiology Stanford University - Neurosciences Interdepartmental Program UCLA - Interdepartmental PhD Program for Neuroscience UCSD - Neurosciences Graduate Program UC Berkeley - Neuroscience PhD Program
