I am doing Hispanic Literatures MA. I am hoping to continue onto the PhD and the Gender Studies PhD minor is one of the reasons I decided on IUB.
-
Hi! I will also be attending this fall. I am actually visiting next week. I am so excited!

That is an awesome list of acceptances. I know a lot of people who applied and have applied in the past to UT Austin and been rejected. They are very selective from what I hear. Also, VANDERBILT!?!? Tell me that is where you are leaning towards to!! They have an awesome program and great faculty. Congrats!!!

I am planning to go on to a PhD program. Thank you. Everything you said made sense.

Help! Should I choose a MA program that does not offer me funding but allows me to remain in my current well paid job, or a funded MA with a semi-low stipend a few states away? I head back from Rutgers, which was my last school and it was a "thanks, but no thanks" kind of thing. With that, I have heard from my four schools, only two acceptances.
-
I got accepted into Temple's MA. Kind of frustrated because I wanted to be admitted directly into their PhD but at least it wasn't another rejection. No funding tho. :/

If you are referring to UMich rather than Michigan State, I think that they are both excellent programs. They both have an excellent faculty and would be ideal places. Personally, I am more partial to UMich. They were my first choice and I was bummed to be rejected, even though I knew it was a long shot since I do not have a MA and my BA program was not the best overall. I think that they both have a strong faculty and it depends on what your main research goals are in order to decide which one is best. I do think that UMich has a more diverse faculty with quite a few big names amongst them, depending the field. I have heard that at Cornell you get to teach literature courses so that might be something you are interested in and would make Cornell much more appealing. Also, Cornell is Cornell. An Ivy might open a lot of doors for you. These are my two cents.

Like you said, it is super early. At least you haven't had a rejection yet and hopefully you will not receive one at all. I am confident that in a few weeks you will go crazy trying to decide on a program after the many acceptance you will get.
-
Just thought I'd bump this thread. Is Bloomington livable on the $16,000 TA stipend? Any advice? Time for making decisions I guess... help!
-
I was accepted into Indiana's MA program!!! They are offering a teaching assistantship. Beyond excited since I was getting really nervous and did not think that I would be admitted anywhere that would offer me funding.
-
Hopefully we will be getting good news this week. I think that we should hear from Indiana by Friday at the latest, if the results from previous years are anything to go by. Keeping my fingers crossed for all of us. "May the odds be ever in your favor."
-
Has anyone heard anything from Indiana or Rutgers??
-
Hey, I also got a no from them. I knew it was a long shot, especially since I do not have a M.A. in Spanish, even though I do have a M.A. in another discipline. This is definitely my dream school and I will be applying again after I complete a MA in Spanish.

Hey, I haven't heard any decisions yet. The wait is killing me.
-
I agree we should start hearing back soon. Looking at previous years, umich and IUB should start sending applications soon. I just really need to find out soon. I am constantly distracted at work and that has affected my teaching. Sounds rough. Hopefully you will resolve that soon.

Just out of curiosity, how is everyone holding up? I feel like I all I do is worry about the whole process. It is a good thing that I have a full-time job that keeps my mind occupied, if not, I'd go crazy.
-
Well congrats! I am excited for you!
-
Congrats!!!! Do you mind sharing which one? I hope it was one of your top choice!!!
-
First, congrats on getting into your top choice, that is awesome! I have 2 of the letters, one the professor wanted me to proof read for accuracy (she's had it for a year), and this one, the professor knows that I like to keep record of just about everything so he sent it to me. It is very generic! We are talking about a professor who sought me out for projects, I took most of the classes in my major with him, he was recipient to a prestigious award at my institution and he chose me to be there, since each awardee was allowed to bring one student to the ceremony. I am just baffled that he used a clearly prewritten letter that he has used in the past and did not add a single thing to show that I am qualified for graduate work after constantly saying that I should apply. Had I seen the letter earlier, I would have asked another professor since I have two other that could provide strong letters. It just sucks that now the decision waiting process became even more stressful.
-
Slowly freaking out due to the fact that one of my letters of recommendation wasn't the strongest, it seemed very generic in my opinion. I taught that this would be my strongest letter but it is not. This professor was appalled when I told him that I want applying to grad school since I don't think I have the strongest record or clearly defined research interests. The professor single handedly ended up convincing me, and I applied to a few programs. However, he forwarded me a copy of his LOR and it is not what I was hoping for. It terrifies me because he is my program's expert in the area that I am interested in. I know that I have a really strong letter since my other professor also sent it to me, and I am not worried about the third one since thanks to that professors recommendations and nominations I have won multiple scholarships. Am I alone in this? Am I over thinking? Sorry for the rant.

That's awesome! I also applied to Michigan! I mostly applied to Master programs, that is one of my two PhD programs, alongside NYU. My interests are more of Contemporary Latin American literature, more specifically the Caribbean with an interest in gender, sexuality and diaspora.
-
I think that this is a general thing, the nervousness I mean. Are you a literature or linguistics concentration? Which programs are you looking into? Best of luck!
-
Well at least I am not the only one stressed. Wow! 11 PhD programs?!?! I could barely put together the 6 that I sent out, and one doesn't require SOP, LORs, or GRE scores. Do you have a masters already? My programs are also in the East Coast for the most part. I am assuming that we will start hearing back late-January, February. I now that one of the programs I applied to starts sending out decisions early February. Best of luck to you!

Hey guys, I figure I'd start a thread for this year. Where is everyone applying to? I just finished all my applications and I ended up applying to 1 PhD program, 4 master programs, and 1 MAT. Am I the only one feeling extremely stressed by all this?
