  1. Hi all,

I currently hold the SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship, I have for one year now, and two more years going. When I first submitted the application, it was based on an old research topic. I have since changed it, and this new idea will be part of my dissertation. There really isn't any relationship between this new idea and the old one. Is this okay for SSHRC? Or am I screwed (financially) if I stay with this new topic?

    Thanks,

    euges720

  2. the SSHRC is a fellowship, not a degree. you list it under awards, grants, and fellowships, not under education. it would be over the top. no fellowships, no matter how prestigious (and while the SSHRC is an awesome deal, it's given out to so many people that i'd not necessarily call it that prestigious), should go under the education heading of your CV.

I agree, but on the other hand, you are called a SSHRC Doctoral Fellow. Kind of like a Post-doctoral Fellow, you would list it under your "Academic Appointments" or the like.

  3. For those who have a SSHRC doctoral fellowship, how do you metion this on your CV? Do you list it under the other awards and honours you've received? Or would you write something like...

    EDUCATION

    PhD, University of X, 2008

    SSHRC Doctoral Fellow, 2007-2008

    MA, University of Y, 2007

Would this be over the top, especially when you're on the job market? Any thoughts?

  4. Hi there, fellow SSHRC doctoral fellowship recipient here at the University of Toronto. Wondering if anyone who is also a recipient would like to schedule a meet-and-greet sometime? I think this would be a useful to share ideas, be intellectual (lol), but basically, just make some friends and have fun.

For recipients at other schools, feel free to use this board to schedule your own get-togethers too.

  5. A bit off track, but for those who have won a SSHRC, can we call ourselves "SSHRC Doctoral Fellows" on our CV? I mean, in addition to putting "Won SSHRC Doctoral Fellowship" under "Awards" in our CV. Makes us look a bit more enticing to schools when we apply for jobs?

  6. ok, Thursday is soon, Torontonians. are we still on? shall we say 4pm at the Victory? this will be my first time "meeting people on the internet." how will we know who is who?

why don't we wait a bit until the masters results come out as well as students waiting about being possible upgraded to the CGS and or those on the waiting list? Celebrate altogether! With what we have so far it'll be like just three of us.

  7. Going into 3rd year management here in Toronto. Just checked my mail (was out of town), scored 18.5/30, got the "normal" SSHRC ($20,000) for two years! Didn't get the OGS, but this makes up for it!

Here's my stats, 3.9 GPA, 1 forthcoming book chapter, 2 articles under review at A journals, and about 6 poster/paper presentations at A conferences. I must admit that I didn't put too much effort in my program of study, which may have dragged my score down a bit...

  8. I don't know my score yet, but I just found out that I got a CGS! Guess lack of publications didn't matter after all :)

So when are we going for drinks??

How did you find out? E-mail, mail, call? From SSHRC, your school/program? PLEASE BE SPECIFIC, PEOPLE.

  9. I just saw that my MA supervisor was on the selection committee for my application...oh dear. Now I wait even more nervously.

How did you find out? Is there a list of names/committee members on the website?

  10. Also unsuccessful.

If I remember correctly, I think I've read somewhere that OGS focuses more on your grades (more "quantitative" criteria), whereas in SSHRC (or I guess also in CIHR or NSERC), they focus more on your research potential (more "qualitative" criteria). I have quite a few As, just one B+ which dragged it down a bit, but I've published, and many A+ conferences. But anyways, we'll see. Here's hoping for SSHRC, which is arguably more prestigious and better (since it's for a few years, unlike only 1 year for OGS).

    Good luck, everyone!

  11. Well, at least they don't like. OGS said "after April 14th", they didn't say ON April 14th. To the best of my knowledge, it is right now after April 14th, in line with what they wrote. I agree with you, the wait shouldn't be this long, but you can't file a lawsuit because they didn't really lie or deceive us.

They don't "lie", I meant, lol.

  12. My complaint would refer to the delay, how they have not informed apicants, how they reported that results would be available after the 14th and they are still not out. Etc. The evidence is self explanatory.

  13. Okay, here's the thing. I'm a current grad student, btw, and know my profs pretty well, and they know me pretty well.

So, I collect mugs with (official) university logos on them. Some people collect stamps and butterflies, I collect U-mugs. Obviously, there's no way I can visit every college/university in my lifetime, but the profs in my program typically travel for conferences quite a bit in the year. I'm wondering if you think it's appropriate for me to ask them to buy me a mug, and I'll pay them back? It's not like a postcard, so it's not that small that you can just slip in a bag. It is a mug, a bit bulky to wrap. But, I do intend on paying them back. But is this appropriate? I'm kinda 50/50 on this, so I thought I might here your thoughts. I guess it would depend on my relationship with the individual profs, huh?

Oh, also, I don't intend to ask for every mug from every university. Just the more "famous" ones like Harvard, Stanford, Oxford, etc...

  14. The results were out on April 14th, Tues. night. How come no one posted about getting results on Wed., Thurs.,Fri. nights?

Um, have you been living in a hole lately? Seriously, look at this board, and you'll read that a LOT of people do NOT know of their results yet. Some people got their results on April 14 at midnight, but nothing since. OGS has only posted some results, and whether these posts/results are department-, school-, or region-specific, that remains to be seen.

  15. The decisions have all been made. They just need to enter them in. The issue is likely a matter of personnel. As they have had several months to make the decisions. Entering them all by the day they say they will (the 14th or 16th depending on where you look) should not be that hard, if you have the right personnel and system.

See, my school (Toronto) says otherwise. My department says that they haven't heard anything, and that the only thing they've heard is that OGS (and SSHRC) haven't made up their minds yet, and won't let the departments know until May.

Why does everyone I talk to have a different response? Argh... this is highly confusing. A lack of co-ordination on OGS and SSHRC's part is really frustrating and unacceptable!

  16. In India, every year more than 300 K students appear in national level exams and all get their results on same day ....

just wondering that ministry have no IT expert to upload results at once !!!

Uh... those are knowledge-based exams, and scores can be easily quantified just by tallying up the total. This is a scholarship application, and (unfortunately) much more subjective. There aren't any "points" here, and over a certain number of points you get the scholarship. If you have to ask such a question, that's very troubling.

  17. Last post from me: SSHRC Vanier has made its decisions and has notified university awards offices. U of T awards office e-mailed the results to my department, which called me with the news (application was successful!). They just put individual letters (acceptance and rejection) in snail mail today, so everyone should get them next week. But if you can't wait anymore, I'd contact your university. Best of luck to everyone!

Okay, I'm a current PhD student and applied to SSHRC. I heard back from them confirming that they received my application. But I never heard anything about whether my application was forwarded to Vanier. Does this mean I'm only being considered for SSHRC and not SSHRC Vanier? I found their application process to be quite confusing. Thanks!

  18. SSHRC Vanier results are out too, someone in my program heard from them today.

Oh? Damn! Do you know if they heard by e-mail, snail mail, call,...?

  19. I sent an email to SSHRC asking if they had picked a date to send the letters out on Tuesday.

The good news: they sent a reply within an hour.

The bad news: apparently no specific date has been selected to send the letters, and they are still aiming for "towards the end of April". It looks like Vanier letters have been sent out though, according to another thread...

Vanier, but not for SSHRC. The other threads I believe were CIHR and NSERC, but not SSHRC. There's still hope.

  20. well, this time yesterday people were getting status changes. People found out about being on a reversion list too. This can only most likely mean that we are the rejects if we're still waiting......damn it.

Well, to be sure, yesterday, SOME people have heard, and no one has heard of an official reject. I think it depends on your school/program/year for your results to be updated. Pretty random, I guess. Since no one has received an official reject, there's still hope!

  21. Hi, this is my first time submitting a post, so if wasn't forwarded to the right heading of the forum please forgive me. I got admitted to the doctoral program in the school of education at the Univ. of Mass. Amherst. I thought I was going to receive this award but I didn't. I'm looking on the positive side at least I was one of the candidates nominated for the award out of the entire SOE. However, I really want to go but funding is the issue in addition to that I am overseas. I am in the process of searching for assistantship through their weekly newsletter but I strongly feel I am doing to much. Now this part is new for me because in the past I have been lucky to receive scholarships or awards for a certain amount of money. If anybody is familiar with this school and the process of how funding is issued here please let me know. Do doctoral students have first priority for assistantships? If so, do they have to apply for it. I have developed a dialogue with my interim advisor via internet due to the time difference but I'm really concerned about the timing and dispensing of funds before the summer break.

Do doctoral students have first priority for assistantships? Yes, first and foremost.
