  1. Still nothing. I don't have super high-hopes but I'd just like to know. I don't see what is so hard about them making all of it available at once? Surely they have a database with the info... and likely they've had a week or more to get ready to release the information.

I'm in PhD Management, and still no word.

  2. I heared first from university and then official letter was delivered. hope the best for all

Conclusion from all of this... completely random, or at least, depends on the school/department. The only thing you can do is just wait, I guess. Argh!

  3. I'm wondering what your thoughts are about the "appropriate" level of relationship you should have with your advisor, be they same-sex or different-sex. Should they just be a mentor-type kind of person, or should they be more friendly? When I was on various campus tours when I first got admitted to a few places, I liked this one campus a lot, but I found out that the advisors go drinking with their students quite often, like once a month (in a advisor-student context, I think that's a lot!). I dunno, it just seemed like they were getting *too* friendly with each other, I wanted more "professionalism" in my advisor-student relationship, so I didn't go to the school. But I also want some social thing, just nothing to that extreme (which I felt it was). I'm wondering what your thoughts are?

  4. It sounds to me like you won't receive paychecks over the summer but the paychecks from the rest of the year will total $16k.

Hear hear. I don't think it's confusing whatsoever. I think you're reading too much into the letter. Chill!

  5. I am in Toronto and I got my letter today. Although the letters themselves are dated March 26th, the postmark on my letter was April 6.

So some of you may hear back tomorrow, others perhaps next week!

    Good luck to you all.

NSERC or SSHRC? Please people be specific.

  6. Here's a financial question I can't seem to answer for myself. I have about $25,000 in student loans from my undergraduate years. I'm currently in a Ph.D. program (1st year), and so the 25k are deferred until I graduate and I don't pay any interest until then. Oh, I went to the U.S. for my undergrad (so, US$), but now am in Canada. I'm wondering if I should start paying (some of) the loans back now (like, a few hundred a month), with the US$ = CA$ (pretty much), or should I wait until I graduate, save money (and accrue interest, whether in stocks or something less risky like a high interest savings account or deposit), and then pay it off? Note that, however, in 4 years time, the dollar disparity might go back down to .70 US = $1 CA or so, making any savings in the interim negligible. What would you suggest?

  7. I'm very nervous. I got rejected at the university level last year, but was forwarded to the national competition this year. From the NSERC thread, it looks like notifications have just started arriving. Is SSHRC usually later than NSERC?

    Ditto!

  8. Okay, so is the SSHRC sending out results already? I'm slightly confused. It seems that the NSERC people are receiving (some) notifications/results, and to the best of my knowledge, the NSERC and SSHRC are basically the same thing, except one is for the natural sciences but the other is for the social sciences. I'm currently in a PhD program btw, and thus am a "current grad student" application for SSHRC's doctoral awards.
