  1. From my experience, it's fine. It's something to be expected I think. As long as those are not rival departments (when I was applying I was told that some departments don't get along with each other so I should avoid mention either name to the other department) but I think this rarely happens.
  2. @megabee Are you going to decline their offer because of their poor funding package or because you are set on accepting offers from other schools? If it's the latter case, I think it's polite to say that you're enthusiastic about their program and appreciate the department's interest in you but you received alternative offers from X and Y and have to respectfully decline. You may also want to officially decline their offer and mention in the email that you hope this early notice allows them to extend an offer to an additional deserving candidate, which I'm sure they would appreciate. If you want to attend that school, provided funding is not an issue, you might as well just go to town to bargain with them (with DGS and program admin of course, not your POI). An extra effort will probably make a big difference for your living experience for the next five years. In this case, I think you should make it clear to your POI what's holding you back on their offer.
  3. Thanks for all the inputs! I agree with @Comparativist in that financial packages offered by public universities do seem to come with teaching/RA responsibilities. But would I be correct in assuming that generally people in private universities also try to take on TA/RA responsibilities, the only difference being those responsibilities are extra bucks for them? I have a couple of options from private universities but for me Michigan's reputation and UCSD's location (plus personal reasons) are hard to beat. I'm still waiting to hear from several other schools. Fingers crossed! @durianseason This is very helpful! Knowing that the cost of living is around 1.5k/month is very assuring! I think Michigan's stipend sums up to around 23k/year although it is a little complicated. Would that be enough to afford a modest - comfortable living in Ann Arbor? (P.S. I looked at Duke's FA again and realized that it is a somewhat crazy amount. So it's probably true that Duke offers the best stipend/COL ratio among top programs?)
  4. Hi all! I have been admitted to a couple of public schools (UCSD and Michigan to be exact), I'm wondering if fundings provided by these schools are enough to cover the cost of living in wherever they are located. Or generally how does it feel to live on a 20K+ funding? Input and experience from other schools are equally welcome as I think a many people share the same concern with regards to funding/life as a PhD. Thank you in advance!
  5. Since people are probably planning their campus visits: https://forum.thegradcafe.com/topic/51130-questions-to-ask-during-your-visits/
  6. When we talk about conferences like MPSA or APSA, should I just automatically assume it's the junior scholar section?
  7. For all of us looking for motivations/confidence boost: https://www.princeton.edu/~joha/Johannes_Haushofer_CV_of_Failures.pdf https://twitter.com/mwalibali/status/960882000163897345
  8. Acceptance came after I gave them the document.
  9. UChicago's list has been submitted to the dean since last week. It's just up to the graduate admission office when they can get the files ready and realease decisions.
  10. By correlation, typos get people into grad school
  11. Accepted to Michigan as well! Email from program coordinator in the department. CP subfield.
  12. Let me know if you hear anything. Will do so too.
  13. I honestly don't know what to make of it. The request for my transcript did not come from the department though.
  14. Did NYU acceptances come from DGS or POI?
  15. Did anyone get anything other than the standard financial package from UCSD?
  16. Is this just for IR or all of the admits?
  17. I can claim a Duke acceptance now. Admission letter and FA updated on applicant portal. Did not post on results page.
  18. About an hour ago I got an email from Duke notifying me a decision has been made on my application. But I couldn't log onto my account and the IT service told me my account is locked. Now I'm stuck ugh.
  19. Has anyone heard from Duke this morning?
  20. Not sure if this helps at all but I heard Northwestern has already come up with their final short list of candidates (not sure when).
  21. Out of curiosity, has anyone done an interview with UCSD?
  22. My gut feeling after reading this is that the quality of "TT jobs" is not factored in here. Someone could probably make the argument that some of the graduates from higher ranking schools tend seek postdocs in preparation for a better chance at landing a tenured job at a high ranking school. But then again I'm just speculating here. Additionally, the statement that USC and WashU have placed better than Princeton and NYU is simply beyond my imagination. I'm going to take a closer look at their placement records. Many of the young scholars in CP and whose work I've read are indeed from Princeton and NYU. In the subfield I'm interested in, I don't think I can recall anyone who's from USC or WashU.
