  1. You would probably have a better chance looking into Sports Psychology, or if you are focused on having the degree in Sociology supplementing the courses you feel are necessary from Sports Medicine and Psychology progams at the schools you apply to. It's going to be hard to find many if any "Sports Sociology" specializations I would look for schools with very successful athletic departments, sports medicine, and psychology programs. You will definitely have to piece together your education from several places. I'm having to do that in my current MA program because I want to focus on Sociology of Education and the one course in the program on it isn't being tought while i'm here so I am taking courses from three other programs along with the required courses from my own.. Best of luck
  2. I am a mixed methods kind of guy but throughout my thesis work I have developed a dislike for both quantitative and qualitative methods, mostly due to IRB requirements. If I had to choose I would go with Qualitative.
  3. I will be 24 when I finish my MA and God willing (they take all my credits) I will finish at 27. I shouldnt have to take more than 6 courses so I should spend half my second year studying for comps and enter candidacy in my 3rd year and God willing (IRB and shear time reqs) I will finish my dissertation at the end of my 4th year.
  4. I am now down to 9 schools maybe I will get down to 7. I am working on the SOPs for my top 4 schools first.
  5. Even if your undergrad gpa was from 2 years ago because it is in a completely different field adcomms wouldn't pay any attention to it. The MA GPA also further warrants ignoring the undergrad gpa. You should be fine.

  7. I am applying while finishing up my MA in Sociology. I know that some things no longer matter to Adcomms once you have gotten a masters or matter less, and they even have different GPA requires and expectations as far as what extracurriculars things you should have done. Just wanted to see from what point people are applying.
  8. I know that there is a topic in the Officially Grad Section but wanted to see what all the soc people will be devoting their time to this summer.
  9. In my experience the sociology department tends to follow the culture of the institution, as a sidenote politics haven't really come up between me and my professors of course you know where they lean but in general not much discussion or care about students political lean. (one professor is actually a politician in my department and he doesn't talk about it that much aside from in his classes, but he still doesn't care).
  10. I have talked to at least one professor and a grad student at half the schools so far. working my way through the other half.
  11. I qualify for a fee waiver at every school so 'm not paying the app fees so the price isnt that bad just the GRE scores really. I focusing in soc of ed and there aren't alot of places with that or even enough faculty interested in it ( most places have 1-2) My list use to be 17 schools!!!!!
  12. As we are gearing up for the fall 2011 application season I was just wondering how many programs people are applying to? I am applying to all PhD programs as Im finishing up my MA this year and plan on applying to between 8 and 12
  13. I'm a Lambda Chi Alpha this is my last semester active
  14. If i get in next year i'll be 24. finished undergrad at 21 started MA at 21(spring) start phd at 24
  15. I am diversifying the programs I am sending my apps to across sociology and educational policy PhD programs. I'm looking for top 50 programs could someone tell me what competitive scores would be for these programs. I am not interested in the Ivies or Berkeley, but any other top ranked programs.
  16. Fit is not necessarily a matter of there being a faculty member with the same interests and ideas. When I say fit I'm looking for 1. A faculty member that would be willing to take me on and potentially be my dissertation chair 2. Has enough expertise in the areas that I'm interested to be of use to me In talking with some faculty members its also a matter of potential students literally fitting into their schedule. If the person that they are expecting to be your advisor is planning on going on a two year leave for research leaves that student out in the cold instead of putting a student and the dept in that situation its better to just not accept. There are tons of people who apply to schools simply based on the name of the school with no thought into what the faculty at the school is working on you can't apply to a school know for work in deviance and criminology and want to work on sociology of education for example.
  17. That is definitely not true I go to school in Greensboro and it is definitely a Queer friendly community, although there may not be a great deal of clubs and bars, and such there aren't a great deal of those for straight people either, but as far as schools UNC-Greensboro is definitely queer friendly and salem college in winston-salem is also, as well as Bennett and NC A&T. There are things to do and places to go just not as much as in larger cities.
  18. Alot of programs undergrads only end up reading excerpts from the books or other authors interpretations of the books sadly.
  19. What 10 books would you say Every Sociologist should have read before starting a PhD program 1. The Sociological Imagination, C. Wright Mills 2. The Division of Labor in Society, Emile Durkheim 3. The Power Elite, C. Wright Mills 4. Savage Inequalities, Jonathan Kozol 5. The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism: and Other Writings , Max Weber 6. Suicide, Emile Durkheim 7. Mind, Self, and Society: From the Standpoint of a Social Behaviorist, George Herbert Mead 8. Any social research book by Babbie 9. The Marx-Engels Reader (Second Edition), Karl Marx 10. The History of Sexuality, Vol. 1: An Introduction, Michel Foucualt
  20. I started contacting professors(and current grad students) sunday and have already found what I think will be my top choice!!!! The Fit is definitely there and I think I found the faculty member who could potentially be my dissertation chair!!! Woot Woot
  21. Thanks for the input. I am currently in the process of of widdling down the list I'm shooting for 12, I qualify for a app fee waiver everwhere so thats not as big a cost for me. I'm definitely looking at fit and have started making contact with grad students and faculty at most of the schools. As far as the numbers go my GPA will be closer to the 3.5-3.6 range by the time I apply. my GRE (after practice tests and studying so far) should go up a ton around 790v 670m (first time b/c of paperwork I didnt know that I was gonna be able to take it until ttwo days prior so i didn't study)
  22. Dr. Allan is one of my professors :-D I would actually like more if you have them!!!
  23. Thanks for the positive thoughts and contributions
  24. I've been trying to figure this out for the last year and a half but what is considered a good/acceptable score in sociology? If you know based on school rankings or in general everything helps.
  25. I am somewhat different since I am applying already in the process of receiving a masters and having quite a bit of research experience my undergrad GPA was a 3.87.
