That's what she was told however I know for a fact it' not true as some are being accepted today!

I have not heard anything and my LORIS remains unchanged.  I am preparing for rejection and recognize that there are areas in my application that could definitely use improvement (specifically academics).  I just have to decide if I'm willing to do that or perhaps doing the post-degree BSW is the better route.  I do believe that applying for the MSW was a great learning experience for me and I have definitely had some time to do some additional reflection while waiting for a decision.  I know that I am capable of working in this field and I am also capable of acceptance into a BSW program as I was accepted to Dalhousie and UVic in 2016 but it wasn't the right time.  Perhaps this isn't the right time for my MSW either...

Being on this forum helps me to see all of the equally qualified applicants and makes the competitiveness of this process a stark reality.  I am thrilled for everyone who has been accepted thus far. Congrats!  It makes me feel better knowing that for many of you who were accepted this year that it wasn't your 'first rodeo', so to speak. This was my first application and I have already identified areas that could use improvement. It is hard to convey everything you want in 1000 words and now I am not so sure that I did the best job that I could have done in that respect.  I am already thinking of what I can do  better the next time around if need be.

To those who are still awaiting their fate like myself, this isn't the end of the road for us.  Although it may not be the outcome that we had hoped for we have to realize that some people have to climb the mountain more than once in order to reach the summit.  :)

    Hi everyone!

I got accepted to Laurier!! (two year in person). I was at the doctors office when I got the email and burst into tears... I think everyone around me was very weirded out by me haha. I got the email at 2:55pm and my last name starts with an F, if that matters at all (I feel like it's just absolutely random).

Just some really brief background on me: I have a B+ average in my last 10 credits, about 8000 hours of related experience (half of which was paid), and A- in my research methods course. I think I had strong references and was very happy with my written statement, considering that it was limited to 1000 words. I'm happy to go into more detail about my application incase anyone would like to know!

Also FYI I was waitlisted for U of T for 2018 and when I applied in 2015.

Good luck everyone waiting for that email! It's coming!!

    This is fabulous news! Congrats!

LOL but seriously... like when is this day considered done...?

I am confused by the fact that the on-line applicants seem to have heard nothing so far. The way this whole process is unfolding makes it to hard to even speculate at this point. Especially considering so many people on here have applied to Laurier and only 5 people have heard (at least one of which who posted that they were accepted seems to have recently joined the forum.)

Everyone is still in the running. At least that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!!!

Cheers to another restless and sleep deprived night! ?

  4. Hi all,

I know that this is such a stressful time for everyone regardless of each individual's current situation.  I thought that this video might help.  We all have different timelines for success, be it this year for some and maybe not for another few years for others, but in the end we will all find success!  :)

Hopefully tomorrow renders some very good news for many!

So scared now....I have not received any emails and my loris hasn't changed either. I would have thought that the online acceptances would go out first. I reallllyyy hope these are getting sent out in waves. Congrats to everyone who has received an offer though!

I have not received an email either and my Loris is unchanged. Trying not to let my anxiety get to me but it’s tough. As so may others on here, the direction of my future is dependent on whether or not I am accepted. I also feel the stress you are experiencing waiting for an outcome. I’m going to try to go about my day as usual with hopes that we will all have an answer soon. Wishing everyone all the best of outcomes. :)

    You are not alone!

Hello! Wait what? What exactly do we have to do for this designation? 2 years from now lets say one is done their MSW, they'll have to write a test to be designated? I'm a bit confused- would you be able to elaborate if that is okay?

I wrote the lakehead admissions test which was soooooo much better than the mcmaster SWAT...I wrote it on wed from 3-6 pm and man, those 6 hours were NOT enough. I had a breakdown because I just didn't know how to write it especially the word count.....they were so tough- especially how you would advise each party....definitely didn't get into mac lol. couldnt finish the last question either

If you get an MSW or BSW you will register with the college of Social Workers and be just fine. No need to worry. Yes, the SWAT test was crazy. Too many words to be honest. I found that I was able to answer most questions under the requested word count and then felt the need to “fill” in order to meet the minimum. It took me 5 hours to complete and at that point I was finished mentally and didn’t even bother proof reading. Submit was all I did. Oh, and then proceeded to guzzle a bottle of wine. It was HARD!!!! I feel your pain. ?

I currently work for a regulatory body so I can verify this is true! By 2020 I believe anyone providing mental health care services (ie: psychotherapy, therapy) must be a member of the College of Registered Psychotherapists, OCSWSSW, College of Occupational Therapists, College of Nurses of Ontario or the College of Psychologists.

Thank you for the information. :)

Thanks SW Sevante for the reply and important info! I did not know that everyone working in social services/ mental health will need a professional designation in two years. That is big news and will significantly impact my decision.

I think the post degree BSW results will be released from early to mid June. From what I heard they accept around 25 people for the post degree intake. I feel okay about my first two answers but sort of ran out of time for the last one and had to rush it. I found it difficult also. Best of luck to you and hope you get accepted !

I just heard about this new legislation this morning from a Social Worker.  I had no idea either.  Ugh, June and only 25 people...:(

I spoke to someone yesterday and was told this is true. They will be offering eligible people sept spots if there is no room for may. They didnt specify how many people they will send off to sept but they will call and confirm with you first if you are okay with it

You spoke with someone in the Faculty of Social Work about this?

    Hi Everyone,

I am new to this forum and this is my first time posting. Congrats to everyone who has received their acceptances! I haven't heard anything from U of T yet on acorn and am still awaiting the Laurier results but I don't think I will be accepted because of my experience. I do have volunteer experience in human services but do not have direct work experience in the social work field.

I was wondering, which would be better to take; a Concurrent Disorders graduate certificate or a Social Service Worker intensive diploma ? I know most Social Service Worker programs have two work placements and allow for registration as a Registered Social Service Worker after graduation. The Concurrent Disorders program I am looking at (at Mohawk college) only has one 200 hour work placement and does not give any professional accreditation after graduation (one could register to become a member of the CCACF, however it appears like they would not be qualified for a Canadian Certified Addiction Counselor designation). It does however teach about counselling, mental health, addictions, and related interventions.

Also, did anyone apply to the BSW post-degree at McMaster? I applied to it and wrote their admissions test. I was wondering what other people's experiences were in the McMaster process and how competitive it was to get in (i.e. SWAT scoring).

    Thanks for the assistance!

I would take the SSW program. Ontario has changed their criteria for working in mental health and social services and in 2 years everyone working in the field will have to belong to a professional organization so it would beneficial to take the SSW diploma.

I wrote the SWAT for McMaster and in all honesty found it much more difficult than my masters application for Laurier. I honestly do not feel very confident about it at all and the post-degree BSW was my back-up plan. :(

I know nothing about how they rank that test but I assume that it would be that they are looking for responses that represent the praxis of the program. The only thing I know is that it is ranked 50% academic and 50% SWAT. I don’t think they even take lived/volunteer/work experience into consideration which is pretty disappointing for me but for you this may be a huge advantage if you are lacking in that area. :)

I also think that BSW, MSW, SSW programs have seen a huge increase in applicants this year because of the new legislation being implemented in Ontario. People working in the field who are not ‘grandfathered’ in have 2 years to get the schooling they need in order to have that professional designation which I believe makes all of the programs that much more competitive.

Good luck with the SWAT results. Do you know when they are supposed to send out acceptances?

Just wishing you luck.  I'm also older, and limited in where I can go.  But I'm also more prepared now ... honestly because if I'm paying tuition again I am going to seriously apply myself.

I can relate to that!  I never really cared about school when I started university many moons ago and my marks reflect that.  When I went back 10 years later to complete my degree my marks were significantly improved.  I did not know that this was what I wanted to do entirely until last spring/summer.  I applied to the distance BSW at Dalhousie and UVic 2 years ago and was accepted into both but I wasn't ready to pull the trigger and spend all that money.  I needed more time to be certain that this was what I wanted to do.  Now, I am ready and I am grateful that I waited because I believe that Laurier's MSW program is much more suited to my strengths and the values reflect the kind of social work I want to practice.

    Best of luck to you!

I applied to Dalhousies online program and did not get in. I was waitlisted at Kings so I'm hoping to get off the waitlist there. I looked at the UWindsor program but it isn't the right fit for me. I unfortunately have to either do online or Kings as my husband and I are not in a position to move to accommodate me going to school.

Well I wish you all the best and I can completely relate.  I only applied to Laurier for the exact same reason. It’s so hard when you are older and more established as the process is so much more rigid when you are limited by personal lifestyle factors. Fingers crossed for you. I truly have a lot of respect for other mature applicants as I am one too and completely understand the difficulty in pursuing your ideal career and the the barriers that this can sometimes come along with that. Good luck!

I am, someone posted in response to me that people have heard back as late as end of July in past years about getting off the wait list. I'm trying to be optimistic about getting in. Its hard to try and plan for myself and my family next year not knowing, but I've been going from contract to contract at my current job so the uncertainty is nothing new.

Are you still waiting as well? did you apply anywhere else?

You have some great experience.  Did you apply anywhere else besides King’s? I have heard that they weigh academics very heavily there. I think you would definitely be competitive at Laurier and U of T.

Does she like the program?  I've applied for the Peel location.  I've also applied to Laurier's online program.  Still waiting to hear from both.

She is in the Peel location and she seems to like it (no complaints so far). :)  Any word on a timeline for Laurier's on-line program?

Does she like the program?  I'm at 8200 hours post-grad, and meet their requirement.  But I haven't been working in the field for a while as I've been home with my kids.  And my average is ... well could honestly be better (but I'm over their 73% requirement) as I didn't prioritize school during my undergrad.  But I'm significantly older & hopefully wiser now.

I feel you on the under-grad front @whatdidigetinto.  My average for Laurier admission is the worst part of my application.  I have a lot of employment, volunteer and life experience as I am older too.  Hopefully that will offset the academic average which in my opinion is not really indicative of whether or not you would be a good Social Worker, but what do I know?!  LOL.

I have a friend who is currently in the U of Windsor MSW program for working professionals and she said many came from other fields and have no previous experience in the field so I am confident that you are ahead of the game. As for enjoying it, she is happy and has no complaints thus far.

Hi all Laurier 2 year MSW hopefuls,

I just broke down and emailed the faculty to inquire about a timeline for results and received this in the automatic reply.

    Please note:

Depending on the MSW program, please see below for our target date for all decisions:

    ·         MSW 2 year full-time program early April

So...I guess we can rest easy (or not) until after the long weekend.

    UPDATE!!!!

I just received an email from Lynn Beney from the faculty at Laurier and she indicated that their "target is to have all decisions finalized by mid-April."
