I had this situation with MECA last year. I just sent a quick email to the graduate admissions counselor asking if I had received some sort of scholarship based off of my portfolio/interview. A lot of times that comes through in the mail or will be a separate letter you will receive in your online portal. Sometimes it takes asking the counselor to email your acceptance stuff to see where you stand. As far as asking about funding and fellowships during an interview, there's a time and place to ask about that stuff. I personally try to ask the graduates or the admissions counselor about how the funding for the program works before and after my interview. The interview should really be focused on your work, and what the university has to offer for you. A lot of times for some of the big named schools (MICA, SAIC, RISD, etc.), the interview is a really important component of the process that determines who gets nominated for a scholarship. It really is about the conversation that you have with the faculty, whether they think you are a beneficial fit for the program, and how engaging and interesting you can be in the mix of a cohort. I have had interviewers bring up the funding during the interview which at that point I felt comfortable talking about it and asking how that works. But I wouldn't until post interview or through research. It doesn't hurt to ask an admissions counselor; in fact, it's kind of their job to make sure you have that information. It's not rude or impolite to ask them if you received any sort of aid in the form of fellowship, TAship, or scholarship. Often times they may give you information on the appeals process to receive more money and what avenues you can go with through the university to receive it.

For people that interviewed with Tyler, does anyone know when we will hear back? The wait is killing me.

You should definitely be able to negotiate more money with MECA. I did last year and I’m planning on doing it again this year.

Received an offer from MECA today via phone. They gave me a scholarship but it’s not nearly enough to cover attending the school.

Is anyone getting nervous that they won’t get in anywhere or be able to attend this coming year? This is my third time applying for MFA programs and the fact I’ve only had one interview with my number one school is making me feel like chances are just really slim for me this year for me. I’m not sure what I’m going to do if I don’t get in. I’ve worked my ass off really hard this year to transition into this, so I’m starting to get paranoid that I’ll be heading back to my crappy job.

I want to add something in addition to other peoples response. I firmly believe that reaching out to a school can make a huge difference, but I don’t always start with a faculty you like. I would start with a grad admissions counselor for the program if your school has one. Since they act as a line of communication between the school and prospective candidates, they will most likely respond to them. I typically will ask them if there is a faculty in a specific department you can speak to, or any of the current grads. They know who can give you the best information and who is available to talk within the university. I did this for Tyler last year and this year, and I think it made a huge difference. Last year I was able to speak with the print head and this year I did the same thing with a handful of current grads. It helped them refresh who I was when it came time for the formal interview. Even if you meet with a current grad, that can make a world of difference too. I learned applying this year that many universities ask their current grads who they think would make a good candidate or not.

I don't think its that important depending on whether your program is pretty medium specific or not. I think its more important to make sure your work is visually arresting in your portfolio. Most universities will do a mass purge of applicants based on their portfolio to narrow down the 100 or so applicants they get for a department to a short list. Often times, taking no more than 1-3 minutes per applicant. I'd recommend making sure your most visually arresting work is towards the front and really build a flow into your portfolio so everything feels engaging. I totally wonder this too, because I'm traditionally trained in printmaking but my work has evolved to include photography, drawing, installation, book arts, digital printing, textiles, etc. At times it can feel like I'm not very focused in my practice because I take multiple approaches to making that I haven't quite married (my website is a total mess that verifies this). But there are programs out there that want people that are transdisciplinary or work with interdisciplinary media. The hardest part is not letting your inner self regret the work you are proud of.

Piggy backing off of strawberrycat to say that often times these portfolio reviews are really meant for faculty to give feedback on a complete body of work and advice on how to give a full and strong application. They are often looking for what’s missing or what needs to be worked on with your application, and not necessarily looking for who they are wanting to take on next year. They have no way of knowing who is actually going to be applying and how many people and what type of work. The same thing happened to me with SUNY Purchase last year where I thought bc of my portfolio review that I would be a really strong candidate, and I ended up getting rejected. It doesn’t mean that you aren’t making relevant work or that you are the worst. It just means you might not be what they are looking for.

Same, studio practice has been more or less not as productive. Print faculty at Tyler were really engaged in my practice and the reasons I was doing things. They started the interview by me asking questions first (which is a first for me, probably trying to break the ice). We went into talking about the conceptual nature of my work along with the history of printmaking. For once, I felt like I really could see how conversations with these faculty could go in a grad critique or a studio visit. We also discussed logistical things like how the university funds their students. What has me spiraling though, is that they did disclose they are considering taking on 2-3 students in the print department this semester, and that the interviews are a shortlist of applicants they wanted to talk about. So I’m not sure if I’m competing against 5,10,..20 or so shortlisted people. I guess I’m going to have to sit here and wait.

I find the “how does your work fit in with the contemporary art world/scene?” question to be a terrible question. I tend to focus on talking about it in relationship to education/university/artist run programs. It’s really hard to talk about where your work fits when you might be so young to making or may not have access to specific communities or opportunities. I try to rephrase this to a sensibility of where you would like your work to go rather than where does it fit now.

Thanks for the input. I know mine is just with the department head and assistant professor, which will be nice to have only two people engaged with the work. I know the print department is much smaller than the painting. Tyler is my top choice so I’m a bit nervous. I’m sure I’ll do fine though.

From my experience, my best interview questions are ones that insert yourself into the university and community. I like to approach it as these are things and programs within the school I’m specifically interested in working with. For example, I’m really particularly interested in working with the artist book special collections archive at most of the universities I’m applying to. And I’m curious as to why sort of programming the collections has in conjunction with the printmaking departments. So I may ask the program how I could get involved with them? I’ll probably be asking about ways in which students do artist run based projects as well (for me particularly it’s important for schools to foster that sort of attitude). I always want the faculty Im interviewing to have a sense or picture of how I can contribute to their program.

Surprisingly, I worked really hard to get all my 8 schools applications done early. I was able to finish before the holidays on most of my apps. Now it's just the waiting game, and preparing for any interviews I might receive.

I interviewed with SUNY Purchase last year and was waitlisted. I ultimately wouldn't have chosen to go to Purchase based on the MFA faculty and the structure of their program. Their program has a single MFA faculty member Faye Hirsch. She's extremely knowledgable with a PHD in art history from Yale, with her focus being the history of printmaking (part of the reason I applied to the school). What I didn't like is that the grads there didn't have a strong relationship with the core associate professors per department. Your committee is made up of visiting artists per semester instead of the traditional pick your committee based on the faculty of the school, which I wasn't a fan of since I really wanted strong ties to the university. I will say though, by speaking with the grads I interviewed with, that they all seemed to be getting a lot of attention and focus from the artists. So they never felt like people associated with the university were disengaged from the artists.

I didn't think too much about it. I've only seen this last year on my SAIC application and this year on my Rutgers application. To be honest, most faculty reviewing this know you are probably applying to more than one school. My interview last year for SAIC did ask about the other schools I were applying to and I explained that I was considering other schools for specific reasons. I don't think it hindered my chances with the program at all.
