I would reach back to the university, they should be sending you a financial aid information, and if there’s none, they should be able to notify you of that.

For those of you with interviews at SAIC this weekend, did you happen to get an invite to a virtual hangout the Friday before? The department of printmedia is doing a virtual get together instead of an in person one due to COVID. Are any other departments doing this?

I’ll be honest, I haven’t really seen anyone going for printmaking. Are there any printmakers in this chat/applying to printmaking?

Yeah, I got asked some pretty daunting questions. For example, when elaborating on my practice, they asked me what is like the “thing” the drives my research in my practice? This was after explaining what my practice is about and what my historical ties to printmaking were. So I was like “uh, I thought I answered this” but I guess they wanted more? I got asked which pieces in my portfolio lean into the direction I could envision my grad school experience be. They focused A LOT on what I am reading right now, which through me off because the past year has been a nightmare of me working really hard just to pay my bills. I ended up talking about my zine collection and some publishers I liked since it was the only thing I really had time to read currently. They responded well to that but were like disappointed (maybe?) that I hadn’t been spending time reading actual books. I mentioned in my statement that I’m really trying to achieve accessible discussions around queerness in my work. We ended up talking a lot about teaching pedagogy and the role of TA’s for graduate students. This was all after having technical difficulties so I was pretty frazzled from the start.

I wanted to throw this question out there. Did anyone have a rough first interview? I had a really rough interview on Tuesday night that didn’t go very well or expected at all. Lots of questions I didn’t expect to be thrown my way with answers I didn’t have fully fleshed out. Anyone have any tips in regards of how to recover from a rough interview? I’m learning that it’s okay to have notes prepared for the interviews, and trying not to be so hard on myself about it.

I used professors from college. I graduated with my BFA in 2017. So I just kept in touch and used professors that still keep in touch/worked one on one with me.

Still waiting in the dark for something from Tyler Printmaking ?

Kinda a rushed panicked inquiry. Has anyone had complete technical issues getting into an interview? I am supposed to be having one right now, and the link isn't working and I'm starting to freak out.

I see a lot of people posting about applying to VCU here in Richmond. If anyone needs any advice on how to navigate the city or what the city has to offer artists, I'd be happy to chat. I currently live in Richmond and find the city to be a really awesome place to make.

Posing another question. Has anyone gotten accepted when applying, and ended up rejecting because you couldn’t afford it? I’m scared that I’m just not able to accept going financially. The 5 schools I applied to, only a couple offer decent funding. I’m nervous that I’m going to have to wait another year since I’m banking on scholarship money. How bad does it hurt having to tell a school no due to finances?

That’s sorta how I felt about Yale. I’m not sure it’s worth going that much in debt for a program that doesn’t really support what I do.

Out of curiosity, for those that chose to apply to Yale, what is bringing you to apply there? I thought about applying this year, but their program seems to be more painting focused than printmaking within their MFA cohorts. I just couldn’t see myself going there.

I actually have. But only because I was able to retrieve an old account when I applied to their MFA program in 2017. I cannot remember for the life of me how I was able to create it though. My application status hasn’t changed from the committee is reviewing the application.

Who’s joining the “still waiting to hear back from Tyler” club? Does anyone know if certain departments don’t interview. Is it possible to get an acceptance letter without an interview depending on the candidate? Still on the edge of my seat since Tyler is my number 1 choice.
