I have imposter syndrome SO HARD right now. I reviewed the survey courses that TAs teach in the first year, saw that the same anthology was used across all the sections, and ordered it already to being studying it ASAP so my future students don’t suffer for all that I don’t know.

I’m also reviewing some advanced grammar concepts so I can clearly articulate to my students why their writing is poor/ineffective.

I will review Art and its Significance this summer (probably starting in June—the whole point is to be fresh on the topics in August).

Surprisingly, no imposter syndrome yet! I do plan on reading A LOT this summer - I have many books on my shelf that I haven't had time to glance at yet due to adjuncting.

First on my list is Kendi's "Stamped from the Beginning" (a history of racism in the US), followed by some other texts along those lines.

Is anyone planning to check out the graduate student housing during their visit(s)? I found a place I'd LOVE to live in through university housing but I'm not sure if it makes sense to visit while we are there (if it's even possible to take a look at grad student housing).

I'm going to try to check out the family housing at Delaware, since the website only has a floor plan and more pics, and as my fiancé isn't coming to the visit days, I want to get some pics for him

  3. I also only have one acceptance thus far, and I plan on keeping it on the DL about my rejections. I am, however, still waiting to hear back from programs, but that might change by the time the student recruitment weekend for Delaware happens. So, even if by that point I have all rejections besides Delaware, I plan on saying that I am strongly considering Delaware, and leaving it at that.

I have a list of 16 questions so far that I will be asking, so I say it's good to ask important questions that others have already brought up in this thread.

    Also, huge congrats!

The Conover Apartments? I happen to be at a coffee shop right across the street from them. My friend lives there and you have the benefit that they're basically on campus (literally a 5 minute walk from the Green max).

For future years, let me say you can DEFINITELY find a better apartment for less money.  They're not bad but they're not super nice. Conover is kind of pricey in comparison to what you can find in Newark. There are also a lot of apartments on the shuttle routes (Studio Green, Rittenhouse, Pinebrook, The Retreat) so you can avoid a parking pass/driving to campus .  Also for Conover you'll have to buy a parking pass to park in the lot outside of your aparment (I think it's over $300, which is a ridiculous expense for what you're paying in rent but whatever). One of the worst parts of UD is the riduculous cost of a parking pass. I ride the shuttle onto campus. The very few times i need to drive to campus I'll pay the $7 to park in a lot that day.

Again, I don't live in Conover and I can't speak to all the complexes in and around UD, but that's just what I know!

Thank you so much, and again, not sure since I have not completely made my decision yet (still 5 more schools to hear back from).

And my fiance will have the car most of the time for commuting to wherever he happens to get a job, so I don't plan to have it on campus much. And yeah, I'm spoiled now where I am because as a faculty member (adjunct) I only have to pay $2 for a parking pass (small liberal arts state university).

When I visit I am going to get some more info on on-campus housing vs. off campus and suggestions.

It is good to hear that for the future that there are many apartments on shuttle routes! That sounds fantastic. I also plan to bike around a lot. - for the shuttle, do you buy a yearly or monthly pass, or pay each time you go on?

Ahh you're a star! Agreed that hopefully we've heard something by then though haha! I'm wondering if they're waiting to hear back initial responses from their 1st round of admits before deciding whether to admit a 2nd round or waitlist people...this is very different from what they've done before I think (all at once) but maybe if, as you said, they're looking for a large cohort they're trying it out? (also! How did you know what size cohort they were looking for? :o Any more deets? /nosy)

I thiiiink I'm the only lurker! @signandsignifiers as well? I'm just generally mystified why schools don't send out rejections immediately if they have all acceptances/waitlists out, unless they have some soft waitlist situation going on.  But that's my trying to comprehend the strange inner-workings of the admissions process, which no mere mortal should ever attempt

No idea about the size of the cohort!

I'm just completely spitballing about the waitlist. I applied to UCSB last round as well, and was rejected, but don't remember it taking this long, but I could be misremembering.

I just got into Columbia!!!!! I actually did not post on the board, so that must be another. I have been rejected from all 7 of my other programs, and this was the last place I was waiting on, and I just got accepted. Oh my god. I am beyond happy, grateful, and shocked. I've been looking at options for next year assuming I'd have to apply again for another round. YOU GUYS.

THAT'S SO AMAZING!!! Huge congrats! So glad you got into a great program for you!

Yeah if you live in Newark near the school, you won't have a bad commute at all. My friend lives in Maryland (since we're so close to the border) and she has a 20 minute commute max. If you get more into the suburbs/outside of Newark, that's when you'd have maybe a 30 minute commute?

And thanks so much! I study political communication! They're all entirely unexpected but I'm absolutely thrilled!

Oh that super convenient. For the first year fiance and I plan to do on campus family housing (I love being right on campus 24/7), but in future years probably living off campus, but close by.

I live about 20 minutes from UMASS Amherst - it's a beautiful campus and the surrounding area is great as well (Amherst, Northampton, etc).

So downtown Newark traffic is kind of annoying, but that's just the few streets surrounding the school. I live a few miles away from the university and it's about a 15 minute drive or shuttle ride.  As far as the highways go: the Delaware Memorial Bridge, going to Wilmington, and headed towards Philly there's usually some annoying rush hour traffic. But again, that's on major highways.

All in all it's pretty easy to get around, I'd say. Nothing out of the ordinary.

Good to hear! Thank you - that's about what I expected. 15 minute drive is not bad at all; my work commute now is 40 minutes to an hour.

And congrats on all of your acceptances - what is your focus?

Thank you for your encouragement! I am trying to get over that wave of doubt by taking some distance :)

And try applying to some summer institutes or seminars - attending the Futures of American Studies Institute helped me so incredibly much - great confidence boost and helped me hook up with some profs who helped me a ton with my apps this season

Wow... like... I know what a rejection means, and thank you for spelling it out on my heart!

I'm also mildly suffering from being rejected twice on the same manuscript on a pretty condescending note. I don't expect the editors angels, but I am having doubts about continuing in academics.

I get your point. I must've mistaken my tone when I said "we do have to..." because that was more to tell myself to brace myself against my own UC Davis rejection :D

Don't give up if it's what you really want! This is my third round of apps and first ever acceptance.

I was shaken to read that too... not competitive enough? yeah duh, this is a rejection letter! But I guess we do have to get used to these things, especially when we start trying to publish.

Very true. I think the rudest rejection I received (so far) was last app season from Brown's American Studies, something along the lines of: "We want the best and you are not it" is what I summarize it to be.

Also got a pretty tough rejection from an article I sent to MELUS for publication; got that rejection many months back.

This. Any Intro to Grad Studies course worth its salt will begin with "The market is really rough - like so rough that I barely managed to finagle this job twenty years ago with my top tier PhD and well received book. Anyways, you're already here, so we should get started..."

That's about as transparent as you can get!

Amen to that. My Intro to Grad studies prof when I got my Master's always told me: "Keep your eyes WIDE OPEN" and that the market is so incredibly tough

There are some places to hear live music - mostly local bands at surrounding bars. Also - if you head into Wilmington (20 minutes away), there's a great barcade there called 1984 that'd I'd highly recommend. They have live music/karaoke all the time. They also sometimes have bands tour to various bars in Wilmington,  but for more popular bands, you'll have to go to Philly.

And there's tons of on campus events - stuff throughout the week and on the weekend the activities board has recent movies playing in the student center for $3.

We're a pretty bike friendly campus in my opinion. Tons of bike racks around campus (there are certain areas you have to walk your bike because they're pedestrian heavy) and most of the main roads surrounding campus have bike lanes. As far as trails around - a friend of mine was in a group for that/there are sometimes bike races on Main Street? I don't ride so I can't recommend any specific trails - sorry!

How is traffic around Newark/around the campus area? I have a car but HATE driving haha. Well, I should rephrase - I hate driving on major highways and places that I am not yet familiar with.

Fiance and I will be sharing a car, so depending on where he works, he will be having a car most of the time.
