  1. Same thing with Michigan please! if you decided you're not attending, PLEASE decline your offer or remove your application from consideration.
  2. I live near the NIH and have some friends + family who work there. Usually the staff at the NIH (your lab director, etc.) will know the best spots but UMD is a fairly good school and would be a good place to take them over the summer if you are planning on applying next cycle. If you are living in DC rather than MD, then trying Georgetown or GW for over the summer as well. American would be 3rd on that list, then George Mason if you are living in VA. Hope this helps a little.
  3. Just called Temple earlier this afternoon. They said we should expect to hear in the next 2-3 weeks and that they haven't given out any decisions.
  4. Stat Postdoc- Thank you very much for all of your valuable insight! I will try and use all of the advice to my advantage going in. Thank you for all of your help throughout the forum and making this process easier for everyone else! B
  5. Thank you very much for all of the helpful insight! Is there a good way to handle the adjustment from undergrad to grad school in your experience?
  6. Hi all- I just wanted to gather some advice about how I should spend the summer before I start working towards my Ph.D. From what I have read, most people suggest relaxing and traveling --both of which I am planning on doing! The only other thing I am planning on doing is moving into my apartment in mid August to try and get a beat on the local area. Does anyone have any advice otherwise? Should I be prepping at all, or will the early coursework serve as some prep? Thanks!
  7. Thanks for all the advice and info everyone! I'll reach out to the departments in the morning!
  8. I haven't yet heard back from UNC or OSU, both of which I submitted to back in December. Do you think it is appropriate to send an email asking about my status? I believe UNC's deadline was December 11th, or something like that.
  9. Something is definitely different, that's for sure! I got an adequately nice form letter with my admission decision, and even had contacts there + a connection with my advisor. I know that they had some really top candidates and I'm sure they'll have a fantastic cohort!
  10. Thanks for the advice everyone! @bayessaysI will definitely follow your advice and go with what I'm more comfortable with. Maybe I won't switch and get another mac. Thanks all! B
  11. Hi! Actually, I've been doing some research using INLA this semester and have had issues with the package developers not updating the package to be compatible with new versions of R studio. This has happened before with spatial packages ive used as well, and at times its been frustrating for workarounds. Do you think a mac is okay, and that this is probably a rarer thing? The R studio stuff is my main concern, as I do love my mac otherwise.
  12. Hi all- I need to buy a new laptop (currently a mac user- but will be switching) and wanted to see if people had any advice on what to look for when purchasing a laptop for grad school. I will for sure make sure that I have 16GB+ of RAM and an i7. Other than that, are there any things (from your experience) that have been really useful to have in your laptop? I would think that windows would be good when working with R Studio and other programming languages as well. Thanks!
  13. Looks like PSU and UMich are getting back to people. Good luck all!
  14. Thanks! That's what I was thinking as well. I don't want to be too presumptuous, and if it comes up, great, if not, it's information I can find out elsewhere I'm sure.
  15. Thank you so much for the link, I really appreciate it!
  16. I have an interview tomorrow so I am kind of in the same boat. I don't have too many questions, but a lot of mine are about placement, the life of their graduate students, the atmosphere of the department and also the nearby community. Would it be rude (or too presumptuous) to ask about the type of support graduate students can expect? Thanks!
  17. Thanks guys for the help! Also, I won an award at JMM last week, and was asked to sit on a panel regarding my research. Is it worthwhile to send an update to the schools I applied to? If so, do I just send it to the staff there and ask for them to pass it along, or to the grad coordinator? Thanks!
  18. Just a question- At what point is it appropriate to reach out to programs to see when we should hear back? I know its early, but I wanted to see what a good rule of thumb is. Is it early march? Thanks!
  19. Just got an email to check my portal at NCSU -- rejection. Not surprising. Good luck to everyone else who applied!
  20. What does everyone think a typical timeline is to hear back from a school? I know some have heard from schools like OSU already, but thats a 2.5 week turnaround, which seems extremely unlikely for most programs. Do we suspect 8 weeks from the deadline or just mid-March regardless of the deadline is a good bet? Thanks and good luck all!
  21. Thank you so much for your response, Bayes. I'm inclined to agree with you. I'll listen to your advice! Thanks so much.
  22. Also, I had a 3.5 on the AW portion for the first GRE, but I expect now to be much higher as I forgot to address counter arguments the first time. Still is it better to pick the higher Q section?
