Job prospects at schools ranked 40-50 in political science?
DrRockso replied to humanist's topic in Political Science Forum
Gotta take the USN rankings with a grain of salt or two. BC's a smaller, theory-focused program, and actually very competitive. Southern Cal was unranked, as well, and while I don't know a lot about the program, it has high admission standards and seems to place rather well. Similarly, it's not like the faculty at a large, R1 are going to be staffed with PhDs from Nowhereland U. -
It's a relatively new program, but I've heard good things about political theory/philosophy at Baylor. If you're looking for someplace "lefty", though, it's probably not the place for you.
-
Tulane had a very solid program, from my understanding, prior to Katrina. I asked a faculty member there during my app process for a time-frame regarding a return to granting PhDs, and was told not to hold my breath. Miami(OH) I know nothing about in terms of grad programs.
-
That's still quite a few years back...I guess the department still exists, and was still awarding MAs and PhDs, but it still seems odd to have in the mix a graduate program that's been on hold for the past few years.
-
How is Tulane on the list at all? While USNWR didn't rank them, Tulane isn't offering graduate programs in PoliSci at all at this point. (If they were, I would have applied there....)

Being that I've made my decision as to where I'll be attending come fall, it's time to post.... PROFILE: Type of Undergrad Institution: Private Southern Institution, Top 50 Major(s)/Minor(s): History/Poli Sci Undergrad GPA: 3.2 (3.4 in major) Type of Grad: Law School, Top 30 Grad GPA: 3.0 GRE: 720 V 540 Q 6.0 Writing Any Special Courses: Exchange student during law school with a European institution. Letters of Recommendation: One from Poli Sci, one from History, one from Law School Research Experience: In the legal profession, lots. Outside of that, standard undergrad research papers. Teaching Experience: None Subfield/Research Interests: American/Regional Ideology SOP: Why I'd be a lazy, crappy student who shows up to class unshaven and pants-less...or, you know, why I'd be a good fit at the school, noting their faculty and how my interests overlapped with theirs. Other: Roughly 3 years of practicing as an attorney in two Northeastern states, including a year as a public defender, and appellate experience. Club sport athlete as an undergrad, including 2 years as co-captain. Intermediate German language proficiency. RESULTS: Acceptances: Ole Miss, Oklahoma, U. Georgia, U. Kentucky, FIU. (No funding at UGA and UKY) Waitlists: None Rejections: Vanderbilt, Brown, Maryland, Texas A&M, UNC, UVA Pending: None Going to: Ole Miss What would you have done differently?: Well, it's not like I could have gone back in time and boosted by undergrad GPA, and it's not like I could have applied in a less competitive year. Re-taking the GRE may have helped, but I'm not unhappy with how things worked out for me.

Give us hope! What schools are you NOT accepting?
DrRockso replied to sonnyday's topic in Political Science Forum
I will be an Ole Miss Rebel! (Informed Ole Miss today...tomorrow, have to write the difficult letters. The one to OU will be very difficult to write, since this was a Hell of a tough decision for me to make, and I really got along well with some of the profs there, as well as the DGS....) -
PM has been sent....

OK, so I just received word from a university that, while I'm all but in, that no official decision (and, with it, funding package) can be given until towards the end of the month. Now, at least a few of my schools want an official decision by April 15th...how would you play this? Would you ask the other schools to give you an extra week or so?

Funding seems dicey at Kentucky, turned down offer. -

So, are you gonna be a Buckeye? -
I'm still in funding limbo at UGA, I know one poster here (Aria) said she was turning down UGA's acceptance, and I think she(?) was offered funding....
-
I'm inclined to agree, but there was someone who posted late last week on the results board that they contacted the departmnet and were told they were rejected.[/quote I've been thinking of myself as rejected from UNC for the past few weeks...but, I'm a barrel of sunshine. ;-)

Has anyone got news from Maryland?

Hell, I actually like DC's music scene better than that of most of the other big, East Coast cities. They still have more of a hardcore/oi scene there, as opposed to nothin' but indie rock and emo.... I do like Norman, though, to be honest. Don't know much about the music scene, but it seems like a good college town. (If you have any info, PM me!) -

Still waiting and not sure what to make of it...

They're really giving UNC a run for their money, aren't they? -

Yep. When you go to the ASF page, go to contact info and there will be a "UID" number under your name somewhere. Then, I googled Testudo, went to "graduate admissions", plugged in the UID and the PIN (which is just your birthday) and...BAM! -

And Testudo sends Rockso down for the count...... Being that my favorite thing about the program was its proximity to the DC punk scene, I guess I shouldn't be too shaken up about it, but fuck, anyway.... -

No death by snail mail today...how's my potential co-Terp on the Left Coast doing? -
Ha! Anyone else get a second rejection from Vanderbilt today? I guess they thought my file so was crappy, it needed to be rejected TWICE, just to make sure it didn't rise up and try and seek admittance again..... Also, can I get some PMs from UGA folks?

Still quiet on the Rockso front. Mail came already, and nothing there....anyone else? -

I'm on the East Coast and haven't received any letters....of course, I haven't received any welcoming emails, either. -
You've got a pretty good record so far into the admissions game; I wouldn't be pessimistic about UNC if I were you.
-
UGA admits: We're probably going to have to wait until around March 15th to hear anything re: funding.

According to the Govt Departmental newsletter, 245 applications to UMD this year.... EDIT: FYI, last year they received 266 applications, accepted "just over 15%", and were set to enroll 19 students.....
