    SSHRC 2010

too true. especially since grad students, by and large, change addresses often, live in temporary lodgings, share places with people they don't know well, or spend their summers travelling and doing fieldwork!! i remember doing my MA and checking a friend's mailbox for weeks after she had moved home because she was waiting for important documents to arrive. i don't trust surface mail at all, and it does seem like a colossal waste of money and paper (close to 8000 envelopes!). if not email, then why not just set up a secure site like OGS to check results? all this waiting has turned me into an expert complainer.

    SSHRC 2010

It's an endless source of frustration for grad students who have to negotiate institutional deadlines that never seem to quite match up. it's always the students who bear the brunt of the stress and anxiety when it comes down to it. like, if the second week of april is the standard deadline for accepting/declining offers of admission, you would think that the offices responsible for granting federal and provincial scholarships would be able to announce results a little earlier. a friend of mine doing his PhD in the US told me that getting admitted to his school was contingent upon receiving SSHRC funding. otherwise he would have had to move to the UK! i am glad, whether or not my app is successful this year, that I am not waiting to see which continent i'll be moving to in the fall.

    SSHRC 2010

Hmmm -- Standard Research Grants and the MA/PhD award committees are different, I believe. The former are awarded to Faculty, not grad students, no? There is some language on the SSHRC site that they only disclose names of selection committee members after the close of fiscal.

    SSHRC 2010

Oh wait. I'm an idiot. The list is the selection committee from 2007-2008. Sorry. It's a bit bizarre that they'd just keep old committee lists on the site like that and get uppity grad students like me all fired up. http://www.sshrc.ca/...ourses-eng.aspx

    SSHRC 2010

Well -- yes and no. I'm in music, so I feel that. I had no trouble getting scholarships in my MA...the PhD is a different beast entirely and so far I have been less than successful. You're not going to be competing directly with Law and Business applications, only other applications in your field. There may be more money allocated to business-related degrees (I don't know), but SSHRC is still awarding lots of grants to the humanities. I think I'd be most worried about the level of competition being much much higher more than what discipline you're in.

I just saw that my MA supervisor was on the selection committee for my application...oh dear. Now I wait even more nervously.

    SSHRC 2010

I must say, I have been checking this thread every day for the last two or so weeks to see if anyone has heard anything. I am a first year PhD student, and I didn't have a SSHRC or OGS coming into this year (I was working all last year, and didn't even apply). Got put on the reversion list for the OGS and am essentially losing my mind waiting to hear from SSHRC. The waiting game gets tougher to play with each passing day...,
