don't be. no one in my department, grad studies, or awards contacted me at all. there is no logic, rhyme or reason.

sounds good. the victory is nice -- great food, good selection of microbrews. it's also kind of a grad-student-y hangout so a gaggle of doctoral dorks might not stick out so much.

ok, Thursday is soon, Torontonians. are we still on? shall we say 4pm at the Victory? this will be my first time "meeting people on the internet." how will we know who is who?

i'd love to, but i have a rehearsal. if friday turns out to be the day, have a good time!

i'm open monday-thursday this week coming up! edit: well, evenings, anyways.

i'd be inclined to go a few more blocks west and hit the Victory. better beer and food!

i emailed sshrc to accept. got an IMMEDIATE reply confirming my acceptance. :/ you need to print out and fill out two forms, both of which are available on the sshrc site - under the "using your funds" section. take them to SGS, second floor. i did that today. took 5 min. keep me in mind for drinks! i must say, while i am obviously happy to have been funded, this has been a very bizarre and stressful process. my immediate relief comes with having closure, and not speculating wildly about the whole thing. i got zero communication from my department, or school of grad studies. to those who did not get funded, know that it is not a reflection of the quality of your work or your abilities as a researcher. i think the dimension of randomness and luck that goes into this process is massive, like any juried awards process.

hey hey. just sent you a PM, to avoid incurring the ire of other readers of this forum with too much non-sshrc talk...

well, the letter came. i was awarded a CGS with a score of 20.7/30. thank god the wait is over. i would have had a rotten weekend otherwise. this forum was a weirdly critical lifeline during the last few weeks.

i feel that way about the owner of the store i live above...she probably thinks i am some sort of recluse freak. the last few days i've probably checked my mailbox 25 times.

i agree 1,000%. since starting my PhD, i have faced more rejections (awards, conferences, etc) than ever before. my MA gave me an inflated sense of confidence, and so far the PhD is teaching me how to deal with rejection big time. still waiting for the mail today, but i am expecting the worst.

torontonians -- if you are serious about drinks, let me know! i am. tonight i have a gig (back room at the tranzac. i'll be the guy with a bari sax if anyone is around) otherwise, let's do grab a pint at some point over the summer.

people are variously emailing / getting emailed by their graduate coordinators/grad studies departments/etc. as those results are made available, university by university.

    SSHRC 2010

no SSHRC letter today. no word from grad studies at U of T or my departmental grad adminsitrator either. had a meeting with my supervisor today and he didn't seem to know. either that, or i didn't get it, and he didn't want to tell me directly...i am not gonna stress out about it today anymore.

i'm game. any excuse to celebrate (or commiserate) with other grad students over a pint or seven is good for me.

also hilarious. i am there at least once a week.

    SSHRC 2010

hilarious. i'm in toronto as well -- ossington/davenport area. have already checked the mail slot 4 times today. the owner of the store i live above must think i am nuts.
  18. my general advice, being a semi-seasoned graduate student: you gotta look out for number one. you're going to get screwed many times over by the machinations of academia, be they via bureaucratic, personal, professional, or whatever other else means. if you got into columbia (congrats!) and that's where you wanna be, don't think twice about telling USC you've changed your mind. guaranteed there are a dozen people ready to take your spot. again, kudos! what does "frowned upon" mean? that you'll be inconveniencing some administrative personnel? or that they're going to bill you? i'd get that clarified first. because if it's the former, i really would not worry about it that much.

that seems very bizarre to me that SSHRC would divulge results via email.
  20. the statuses are for OGS. SSHRC results -- if you have been following the SSHRC 2010 thread -- go out this week. you can't check SSHRC online. the reversion list is the "waiting list" for those who were not granted an OGS in the first round of offers, but who may be awarded one when first-offer applicants turn them down, likely due to accepting SSHRC awards. re: my ranking. i called yesterday, and got my reply today, via phone.
  21. actually, just got a call back with my ranking. so if anyone is curious, give them a call!
  22. i actually just called -- and, predictably, got the person's voicemail. i imagine they are getting inundated with calls about this. left a message, and am waiting to hear back.
