Speaking of twitter—they haven’t posted anything since March. Some semblance of an idea for a result date would be nice instead of just guessing.
-
Maybe? But I doubt it, they’d really need to have their shit together lol. And judging by last years forum most people received it on the 3rd Monday (so the 16th for us). I’m actually pretty amazed that rivai got it that early.
-
I really wish the 2017-2018 year created a google docs.......it'd be a lot easier to follow than the forum lol.

Lol my fellowship advisor got mad at me for mentioning I'm lurking on these forums. I mentioned not getting the second email (I applied Asia and a scholarship) and just preparing for other scholarships and she told me this "This is still in the fairly early round, and I know that some applicants may receive queries for different types/durations of programs (i.e., the language flagships). We are on a listserv with hundreds of fellowships advisors across the country, and I don't think Boren has popped up once in discussion. In addition, the Boren staff are on that listserv and regularly respond to questions and emails." This might clarify some things? I just have more questions. Those that did get the 2nd budget email did you respond to the first budget email? Like say "no" or just didn't make any edits by the due date? I'm wondering if that has something to do with it as well.

The insurance thing is interesting....my school’s program requires insurance throughout and it’s labeled on the program form as well. So hopefully that’s the only reason I didn’t get that email... Even if I don’t get it there is still Bridging and Freeman Asia... Best of luck to everyone!!
-
The only way it could make sense that I would receive the scholarship and not get a second email is if those who received the second email are considered canidaites but they noticed something with the budget not acting up. I’m just going to prepare for the worst around the 16th lol.
-
I mean the second email. But also, no one besides a few in Boren Asia (that we know) have received the second. So either each panel is doing things differently or it really is a random spot check/they found inconsistent numbers. It is really stesssful!!!! My guess, if other areas get a second budget update, that is leaning towards a “finalist” category. But in all honesty, I am probably over thinking. I’m also preparing myself for the worst news. Yet, they are really insistent of the “emails don’t equal award” thing. So who knows...well, we will in about two weeks.
-
But re-reading it, it does sound similar to a final round letter....
-
They are really pushing the “emails don’t equal rewarded” thing. I wonder how much they got bothered about it in the past few years.
-
I am also going to Asia and didn’t receive a 2nd email. Here’s hoping they just noticed some inconsistencies.:...

In general, I think it’s a lack of interest in the year long commitment and government work—regardless of a new administration.

I also will be taking an extra year to graduate because I’m studying abroad for a year—but for me it’s worth it. I’ll miss my friends graduations, and that’s sad, but I have never had a chance to travel——let alone be able to actually be in one of the countries I’m learning about. It’s scary, and I’m getting more nervous as the days go on, but this is something I decided is going to happen no matter what. I’m mostly worried I won’t be able to make the best out of it, or I will get depressed while there. So, I’m actually talking to everyone I know about plans if that happens. I have friends who have friends and family in Japan, teachers who live there in the summer, so I’m reaching out to all possible resources to help me if I’m ever feeling stuck. But I’m also still really nervous and scared, it’ll be the first time I’m ever in an environment where I know no one. Im also worried I won’t get as much out of my program as I want.
-
Exactly! And yeah, I’m still going to be a conspiracy fan myself—how else am I suppose to spend these next two weeks? My journey hasn’t been as long, but I can feel you on the struggling on what to do.
-
She wouldn't tell me a yes or a no, basically, it was "Don't worry yourself about the forums and the theories. It will just stress you out." Which even if it used to be true the 2017-2018 year didn't follow the budget email=finalist correlation.
-
It's a lot but it is extremely helpful!!! It really calms my nerves. I have little to no travel experience so hearing from others is the best for me.
-
I was talking to my school's fellowship office advisor about the forum (and my conspiracy theories in general) but she informed me that the advisors also get email updates. She said the flagships haven't gotten a budget update email yet because it's too early for the flagships to finalize a budget---or something along those lines. She mentioned it in passing to calm down my nerves (and to tell me to stop re-reading the old forums lol). She said it as if none of the flagship programs got an email, and I also believe the email I received made it out to sound like the flagships wouldn't receive an email about the budget.

No idea. Boren spaces out the payments into 3 installments (probably to avoid that) but if you run short before payment periods I have no clue. Maybe ask for the payment to be early? Or try to scrape by? I feel like that’s a question to ask an official. I also just feel you’d have to work real damn hard to use all the money up as well (depending on where you’re at).
-
Thank you so much! I’ve asked a few people I know but they never really go into detail much on flying. They just say something along the lines of “It might be a bit rough but you’ll be fine.” This helps a lot, thank you!
-
These next two weeks will be difficult, but if I don't get Boren then I know I need to go ahead and start applying for loans (which I was prepared to do at the beginning of my study abroad opportunity). I just head about a small scholarship I received from my school--which is great! I still have two more scholarships I need to finish up applying for. Also, does anyone here have any advice for a first-time flyer (especially since it'll be a 12+ hour long flight lol).

I found this for the 2017 year. The info about the change in program length is on the 11th page. I suggest we read it all, though, it’s quite interesting. They say no journalism—freelance or anything else—which makes me wonder if can’t also blog while there?
-
Hey all! I applied to study Japanese in Japan (obviously). I’m going for a year, and I stupidly have a count down for April 15th since that’s the rough estimate of the award date lol. I totally don’t like to induce anxiety with my over anticipation or anything.
-
I also read over the old thread a lot...too many times actually...
-
Based off of what I've seen from last year, it seems like the Flagships got a budget email about a week after everyone else.
-
Hi everyone! I also got a budget email update...having to wait until next month for results is slowly killing me. But, it’ll be here sooner rather than later.
