I wrote a general statement and then tailored a couple paragraphs within it. I always mentioned the school name, but depending on the institution, and how much research I was willing to invest into the school, I either just mentioned profs names or their names and the specific work of theirs with which I was familiar/had read.

Ahh, hi everyone. This is my first time applying to Ph.D. programs. I applied to MAs in the 2014 season and got into some good ones (brandeis, gsu, UW-milkwaukee, etc.) with funding but rejected those offers to attend an MFA program in poetry. Back at it for this season: I've applied to 25 programs in the US and Canada, mostly up and down the PGR but a few off of it as well (Utah and Oregon). I got my applications in early, so I've just been lurking, wondering why this thread has been so quiet...
