  1. Do you happen to know if NSERC CGS/PGS is paid out monthly or yearly?
  2. Can CGS/PGS be used in a master program (MSc)? If my supervisor wants me to get a MSc first and then PHD (can write a letter to NSERC), can they allow using the first 2 years fund of CGS/PGS on the master program?
  3. Can CGS/PGS be used in a master program (MSc)? If my supervisor wants me to get a MSc first and then PHD (can write a letter to NSERC), can they allow using the first 2 years fund of CGS/PGS on the master program?
  4. Does anyone know if NSERC PGS-D can be used in a master program? After master program, it will follow a PHD.
  5. Thanks a lot for the information. Is it possible tot defer PGS-D for one year (because the chance of getting a visa is very small now due to the COVID 19). If I defer the PGS-D for one year, can I still be considered to upgrade to CGS after one year (because if there is still a visa issue one year later, I will just go to a Canada school)?
  6. I wonder if I applied for PGS-D, can I upgrade to CGS-D if one awardee decided not go to a non-Canada school and get downgraded to PGS-D?
  7. I have emailed NSERC and have not heard back from them. I think the only possible way to upgrade is that a CGS-D awardee get downgraded because he is not going to Canadian school. Have you applied for CGS-D or PGS-D before?
  8. I am reading the NSERC CGS-D portion in https://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/Students-Etudiants/PG-CS/index_eng.asp ###Quote #### The Canada Graduate Scholarships—Doctoral (CGS D) program is a federal program of scholarships awarded through national competitions by the granting agencies: the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). ############ So it means that CGS-D is awarded by one of three agencies (CIHR NSERC SSHRC) depending on whether your filed of study is "head science", "Engineering" or "Humanities", right?
  9. I only applied to NSERC? My field of study is "engineering". Do I need to apply to CIHR?
  10. Are you very positive that PGS can not be upgraded to CGS? Thank you very much for your answer.
  11. I think the PGS and CGS is one application, right? I find the following in the NSERC pgs website. https://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/students-etudiants/pg-cs/bellandpostgrad-belletsuperieures_eng.asp ####Quote##### Applications to the PGS D program will automatically be considered for the Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarship – Doctoral (CGS D) award, which is offered to the top-ranked applicants; the next tier of meritorious applicants will be offered a PGS D award.
  12. Thank you very much for the reply. Yes, I just know that I get the PGS offer. I have emailed NSERC today about upgrading from PGS to CGS. So they will only do it when a CGS awardee choose to go to a non-Canadian school and get downgraded to PGS?
  13. I wonder does anyone know if it is possible to upgrade from PGS to CGS? I applied for PGS, but will be going to Canadian school. Is there any chance to upgrade? Thanks a lot.
  14. I am also trying to find out if it is possible. I have emailed the NSERC office and have not heard back yet. Do you hear from the NSERC office?
  15. I wonder if it is possible to switch from "CGS to PGS" or from "PGS to CGS"? And is it possible to defer CGS/PGS for one year?
  16. Hello, I have a question in the NSERC PGS-D scholarship starting date. In the form 201, it is asking for the scholarship starting date. So I just enter the next year fall. But what if I don't get admission from any university, do I automatically forfeit the scholarship or it can be carried over to next year? On an un-related note, it seems that NSERC PGS-M (post graduate scholarship - master) is no longer available right? I only see CGS-M on the NSERC website "http://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/Students-Etudiants/PG-CS/CGSM-BESCM_eng.asp", and not PGS-M. And CGS-M is only applicable to Canadian University and not foreign University, right? Thank you.
  17. I think I will definitely email them to clarify. They do say that PGS-D and CGS-D are selected from the same pool. I found the information in the following website. "http://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/Students-Etudiants/PG-CS/BellandPostgrad-BelletSuperieures_eng.asp" ****Quote**** There is a single application and selection process for the CGS D and the PGS D. The top-ranked applicants will be offered a CGS D, and the next tier of meritorious applicants will be offered a PGS D. If you are offered a CGS D, but decide to take your award to an eligible foreign institution and are eligible to do so, you must decline the CGS D and accept a PGS D award in its place. *************
  18. Yes, thank you. I have read through the link thoroughly. On a related note, can I ask if NSERC CGS-D can be switched to PGS-D unconditionally if CGS-D is rewarded? I have been trying to find a web page about this on NSERC website and couldn't find one, do you know if there is a web page about this? Thank you.
  19. Hello, I am trying to apply for NSERC CGS-D or PGS-D. I have two questions regarding on the both program. (1) I am just wondering in case I get the CGS-D, can I change it to PGS-D unconditionally later (because I may want to go to a foreign school if I get admission)? The following is the quote from NSERC website. http://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/Students-Etudiants/PG-CS/BellandPostgrad-BelletSuperieures_eng.asp#note ********quote**** "If you are offered a CGS D, but decide to take your award to an eligible foreign institution and are eligible to do so, you must decline the CGS D and accept a PGS D award in its place." ****************** It does not mention if CGS-D can be changed to PGS-D unconditionally? If not, under what circumstance can this be changed? (2) And if I apply for CGS-D and do not rank high enough among other candidate and do not get it, will I be considered for PGS-D by NSERC? Thank you.
  20. Yes, thank you. I should have started applying two years back to increase the chance to get into the program. I have been working for three years as software engineer and if I applied two years ago and I may still be able to contact my university academic adviser for reference. Right now, I can only try to contact the previous academic adviser and ask if he can fill out the online reference form. Will NSERC ever call my reference? I am not sure if he will pick up the call (usually he is very busy). Thank you.
  21. Hello High_Hopes, sorry that I may have one more question. Can I confirm that only NSERC "PGS-D" is applicable when I apply for school in the USA, right? I also see the following program "http://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/Students-Etudiants/PG-CS/CGSM-BESCM_eng.asp" (CGS-M), and this is only applicable when applying for a Canadian school, right? For the http://www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/Students-Etudiants/PG-CS/CGSForeignStudy-BESCEtudeEtranger_eng.asp (CGS-MSFFS), it seems that there is no defined period (instead PGS-D is two/three years) for the scholarship. Does it mean that CGS-MSFFS needs be applied every year? Thank you.
  22. Hello, I am trying to apply for the NSERC PGS-D online "https://ebiz.nserc.ca/nserc_web/nserc_login_e.htm" and I am a direct applicant. After login, there is a tab that said "contribution/statement". Does anyone know what this tab mean? Do I need to upload previous paper/publication list in there? And there is another tab "justification of eligibility of proposed research", do I need to write justification by myself or do I need potential supervisor to write it? And usually the justification should be about how successful the proposed research can be? Thank you.
  23. I see. Thank you for the clarification. It makes sense that the research topic may change in the future. Because it is a competitive selection process, if I am not selected this year, can I keep on applying next year? Can I ask if the scholarship application takes previous related publication into consideration as deciding factor? After login to application page "https://ebiz.nserc.ca/nserc_web/nserc_login_e.htm", there is a tab that said "report on applicant" and it requires two referee. Because I am not in school for a while, can I ask if I can use my former colleagues at work as reference instead of former prof? Do you also have the same tab "report on applicant" in SSHRC? Thank you.
  24. Yes, thank you. I am applying through the NSERC website right now. And it seems that I need to have a research topic and a detailed proposal. Because I am currently in the beginning of the application, I am not sure what exactly I will be working on (I am doing computer science and many research topics are determined by future supervisor). If I choose a topic now and change it next year in September after admission to school in USA, does it affect the NSERC scholarship? Thank you
  25. Yes, thank you for the information. It seems that in order to qualify for the “Michael Smith Foreign study supplement”, I will have to get the "Alexander Graham Bell Canada Graduate Scholarships-Doctoral Program (PGS-D)" first. Because I am not in school right now, I think I can not apply through Canadian Institution. So I have to apply directly to NSERC. But right now I do not have an admission from a school in the USA yet and I do not have a potential supervisor yet (because the application for 2019 Fall admission just begin, and I am still emailing a lot of potential supervisors), can I still apply right now or do I need to wait for confirmed admission letter from the university in USA? Thank you.
