This is my second year applying too! Since my last application I've gained experience working as an ABA therapist with children with autism, and I did some more volunteering with an SLP in a private clinic with children as well as in a senior's home. I'm really hoping this helps my application this year!

    How about you? :)

It's like we're the same person! I am applying for the second time. Work as an ABA therapist, volunteer with slps and work as an SLP assistant, among other relevant volunteer experience with special needs populations. I have also been admitted to a masters to become a BCBA so this year I have a back up just in case :)

But there's also "overall GPA" at the top of the chart, which is a different number from average??

Average is usually the average of a semester. Like for me I had 22 classes but they need 20 for sub gpa so for two of the classes they were in a semester of 4 courses. So instead of randomly picking two classes from that, they took the average twice for me.

    does this make sense?

    Hi everyone!

I wish you all the best of luck in your speech journeys! I applied to McGill, Toronto, McMaster, Western, and Ottawa. I was so eager to submit my applications already that I gave myself a deadline to have them all submitted before the actual school deadlines, so when it came to that night, I submitted my letters without being fully confident in them. I started editing them last minute then failed to read them over properly before I submitted. Now, every time I read them over, there are a million things I wish I could change!

I wanted to know if anyone else was in the same boat as me? Feeling okay about your letter before submitting it and then reading it over and feeling super bleh about it? I've been struggling with accepting the fact that it's submitted and am feeling super anxious about it.

    Hi Speechy_123

I know how stressful this whole process is! This is the second time I'm doing it so trust me, I know haha! We are always our most critical when it comes to ourselves. If you'd like, someone to read it over or we can compare letters, it might make you feel a bit better. Or if you have any questions, let me know :)

    Hey everyone,

Sub-GPA is 3.75! I think I have an ok amount of volunteer experience in research, retirement homes, speech clinics, mental health inpatient units, soccer coach, peer leader volunteer, and teacher. I have worked with a whole spectrum of people and I have racked up over 200 hours of volunteering. I just wanted to say good luck to everyone. I have definitely been compulsively checking my email and ORPAS for the past week even though I know I won't be getting a response until March (interviews for mcmaster) and April (for western). I am having doubts of if I will even be getting in because I initially though my letter of intent was great but I just read it last nigh and I completely hated it. Not sure what to think because I have heard that a lot of people don't get in their first try but I am very excited for this new chapter in my life. Hope everyone gets in!! :)

You have some amazing stuff!! Do you want to exchange letters? Get a feel for what other people are writing?

Has anyone received any information or confirmation of application from UofT? At the beginning of January I received emails from Western and McMaster basically confirming that my applications had been submitted, but I haven't heard anything like that from UofT.

Last year I didn't hear anything from UofT until I got my rejection, which they email you and send you a nice letter in the mail about it haha

There wasn't a portal or anything though

Hey! As it stands mine is currently posted as 3.69... it's lower than I expected and it's frustrating because many of the courses listed are in the 3.9 to 4.0 range but it averaged out to much lower. I applied to UofT, Western and McGill last year with a 3.55 I believe and I didn't get in.

You should feel very confident about your current SGPA, the range posted for some schools for the accepted class is usually a 3.8 so you're right there! Congrats!.

    I'm at a 3.70 on ORPAS..

Last year, I kind of got screwed over.. I was completing my second degree and had only 19 classes, so they took my overall gpa from my first degree and added it as a 20th class instead of the last class or average of the last semester. Dropped it down to a 3.56. Didn't get in anywhere including McMasters, which I'm not applying to this year! Their minimum sgpa for the MMIs was 3.87.... crazy

@tulipz I had the exact same question! I basically entered it how you described and I think that's correct? But it is very unclear. Hoping someone on here has a definitive answer!

I messaged ORPAS and they said "This section is completely up to applicant discretion - please enter the information in the way that you feel best represents your experience. There is no wrong way as long as you are clear and consistent in your descriptions. The reason it is up to applicant discretion is because the schools would like to allow you the space to represent yourself and experience how you wish ".

    Very confusing in my opinion!

  8. Hi everyone,

Second year applying and I have to say I'm feeling discouraged before the process officially begins. I rewrote my letter, redid my CV, spent the entire year off volunteering.. I just finished my second B.A where my sub-gpa is pretty good (not as good as McMasters minimum interview cut-off from last year though) but some of my pre-reqs from my first degree have really low grades.. These are classes I can't redo and I can't take other classes before applications are due since it would have to be in the winter semester. Anyone have any advice?

Does anyone know if Western has a minimal grade requirement or cut off for the prerequisites?

Minimum Academic Requirements: 4-year undergraduate degree with a minimum “B” average (3.0 on ORPAS scale) in 10 most recent full undergraduate courses (or 20 half courses)”

Hey everyone! I am currently in my first year of SLP at Western and loving it. I also got into UofT and got an interview at McMaster but was ultimately not accepted there. If anyone has any questions, feel free to let me know!

Hi! I would love to know more about you! What was your gpa? Did you have volunteer hours with an SLP? Did you have anything on your CV that made you stand out? Any suggestions for a strong letter that will make me stand out?

  11. Hi everyone!

I haven't seen a 2019 thread for us Canadians applying to SLP yet. Just curious to know where everyone is applying to and what your background is!

I am from Concordia University, finishing up my second BA, and I will be applying all over -- McGill, OttawaU, UofT, McMasters, and Western. I'm hoping I have a chance of getting in, my GPA from this program is a 3.67, although my first BA was under a 3.0.  I work as an ABA therapist and have a ton of diverse volunteering, including with a SLP. I keep seeing acceptances in the US to students with a much lower GPA, so I'm really not sure what to expect.

I'm in the middle of writing my SOP and the character limits from McGill and UofT are seriously throwing me off. Any suggestions?

  12. Hi!

I'm your friendly neighborhood Canadian from Montreal. I have a bit of an off background. I completed my B.A in Psychology and did quite poorly. I graduated with a 2.52 GPA. So I went back to university and I am finishing up an Honours B.A in Linguistics with a GPA of 3.67.

I am applying across Canada only (less competition for you guys!) to McGill, University of Toronto, Ottawa University, McMasters, and Western.

During this B.A, I have been a TA, I currently work as an ABA therapist, I have taken ASL classes, volunteered a bit with an SLP, but my biggest concern would be that they will see my poor grades from my first bachelors degree and disregard me based on that. I have tried to compensate since then, but it very clearly was not the program for me.

    Any ideas?
