  1. @sirTintin The thing is that I already had an onsite interview with 4 professors that were of interest to me and after visiting I'm mentally set on choosing that school; it has everything I could want from a graduate program. I've already sent the professors that interested me most follow up emails confirming my interest. To this point, the only contact I've had with a GEM rep at that school is for a fee waiver. There also weren't any GEM reps at the visitation weekend. Maybe I'm just too tense but I really want to make this work T___T Update: just got a response back from GEM asking them the same thing basically and they said, "Selections are based on the strength of your application.".. @ray92 I didn't have the opportunity to ask any GEM related questions, but maybe I should have. Most of my time was spent talking to other graduate students in the program and finding out what each lab's culture was like. The interviews at the school I visited were 1 on 1, 30 minutes each, and each professor conducted the interview differently. 1 went full out lecture mode and tried to give me a synopsis of his research with a 5 minute inspirational speech towards the end (lol); 2 were very conversational that just gave an overview of the group's research but most of the time was spent getting to know each other; and my last had a powerpoint overview of the group's current research efforts with like 5 minutes of Q&A with the professor at the beginning.
  2. @sirTintin I haven't been selected by an employer. I am kind of at a loss of what to even say. Last thing I would want is to completely ruin my chances.. Any ideas?
  3. Is it advisable to contact the GEM representative at a school that I had an interview at but hasn't released a decision?
  4. I just came back from a sponsored school visit/interview and everyone wore business casual. I would advise against being too casual as the interview is usually the first, physical impression that a school gets of you. In my opinion, it's better to be safe than sorry--especially if the school has not sent out formal admission letters. Hope this helps.
  5. Does anyone know if the stipend that comes with the GEM Fellowship is in addition to the financial offers that schools state in acceptance letters or if if is already included in the figures they present?
  6. If you're in the market for a desktop have you ever considered building your own? I was able to customize mine and am really happy with the result. There are two sites that really helped me: the reddit build your own pc forum and pcpartpicker. Pcpartpicker is really helpful because it will let you know if certain parts that you like are compatible with each other. https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapc https://pcpartpicker.com/
  7. Do all STEM PhD programs interview their eventual admits or do only some require it?
  8. @drfigue Released can also result from being Matched, I think.
  9. Looks like everything should be finalized with employers by Feb 6. Congrats to everyone who was selected.
  10. @Letsgethisbread same but with the whole grad school process and this included . What discourages me is that, like you, I've been matched since forever and my interests led me to list national labs as my employer choices which gives me imposter syndrome af cuz my objective stats aren't that great. Based off what the presenters were saying just now over 600 people were on the webinar and i counted a little over 100 GEM fellows from the 2018 page, you do the math . . What kinda ticked me off during the presentation was when the presenter said "Even if you are not selected, you will be part of the GEM family." wut? lol What does that entail? Mentorship? A small wad of cash? like wassup?? ykno? I could go on . . but I feel you
  11. yea but if all they do is read off the slides . . i mean i coulda done that myself l0l . well back to purgatory ?
  12. im kinda pressed lmao
  13. Doesn't look like there's going to be a Q&A..
  14. i cant believe i rushed home from work driving like a madman in the rain just for them to read from the slides . .
  15. @ray92 lol I mostly just check to see if the universe has heard my plea of releasing me from 'Matched' purgatory
  16. @ray92 like 5 times a day lmao
  17. @ray92 ayy my LOR writer always replies saying she'll submit it by the end of the day but she never does and it kills me because she supervised my research. I was counting on her to be my strongest LOR . . & dunno how much influence GEM has.
  18. @ray92 same . . one of my LOR writers hasnt even submitted for 4 of the schools i applied to whose deadline was 12/15 . .
  19. @ray92 thanks, really helpful ~
  20. Do yall think the gov. shutdown is affecting the review of GEM applications at gov. affiliated institutions..? #forevermatched ?
  21. Just curious, where did you pull the raw data from?
  22. @jar2261 I haven't been released once and it's starting to worry me . .
  23. TITX

    FAFSA?

Do graduate students apply for the FAFSA or is that just for undergrads? Any info is appreciated..
  24. @QuantumFroggy250 I think we're all lost on the same boat lol. They did send out the power point of the presentation so the webinar will most likely be based off that.
  25. Ah, that must be it. Congrats ~ !
