Hi there! I applied to schools last cycle and you absolutely can ask for more funding. I emailed the I believe the dean or assistant dean of admissions but I also know that others emailed the person who signed their admission email! I was able to secure $5,900 more in funding.

This was so helpful! Thank you so much! That's so uplifting to hear. I know a lot of other students last year also said that they had success with negotiations, but I wasn't sure how to begin that process. I've PMed you with some additional questions.

  2. Congrats to everyone who has been admitted!!! Does anyone know when we will receive our financial aid packages?

@mswgirl11 As far as I know, we will not be receiving pay for our field placements. In fact, we pay them to place us--it's definitely one of the things that makes me wrestle with the MSW program. It's expensive and exigent because of the dual curriculum (academics + field placement) which means that finding a part-time job will be difficult. ?

    1. @zoetrope Yes, these packages include federal need-based scholarships and work study as well so don't worry! After you have submitted the FAFSA, then UChicago will update you will in a few weeks what your new financial package will be. Then you can assess how much you will have to take out in loans, which will also be offered as part of the federal aid. Hopefully, the government will be able to offer you a sizable amount on top of whatever UChicago already gave you.
    2. Their website explains that there are three types of federal aid offered:
      1. Loans—borrowed money for college or career school; you must repay your loans, with interest"
      2. Work-study—a work program through which you earn money to help you pay for school
      3. Grants—financial aid that doesn't have to be repaid (unless, for example, you withdraw from school and owe a refund)

I got the short letter. Congrats to all that got in! My path is leading me onward somewhere else.

I'm sorry to hear that! I wish you all the best and you definitely have some excellent options. I attended NYU as an undergrad and had a very positive experience so please feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

Best of luck to everyone else!

Thank you so much!!! I would definitely consider SSA more heavily with a generous scholarship, mainly since my family is still in Chicago and I was born and raised there so it would be nice to be back home.  I also know some SSA alums in Chicago who are doing some really great things.

Hopefully today is the day! Yes. Lol.  If not, they’ve guaranteed to inform us by February 15th so that day will move closer now.

Wow, I wish you the best of luck :) What kinds of things are the SSA alums in Chicago doing? Do you know if they were all happy with their experiences in SSA?

Yes, ha I definitely am clinging to supremely false hope that we'll hear by 5 pm today, but I doubt it.

Ahhh. I hope too. It’s crazy how long the wait is. Or in inpatient

Me too! And it's taking longer than last year! People who applied on the early decision deadline for the full time program heard by January 20th.

Many thanks!! So far, I’ve been accepted to UMichigan, Case Western Reserve, University of Illinois-Chicago and University of Illinois-Urbana.  Top choice is Case.

Congrats!!!! That's an awesome list! If you get accepted to UChicago with a generous scholarship package, would you pivot towards SSA?

Hopefully, tomorrow is the day we've all been long anticipating so you can finally make a decision ?

I’m also dying. I’ve actually heard back from every school except UChicago, so I will be able to make a final decision as soon as they hurry up.  Haha.

Congratulations!!! ? Can I ask where you've been accepted?

I applied to 6 and am waiting on 3.

    Accepted:

    UMich, WashU, UPenn

    Waiting on:

    UNC, Columbia, UDenver

    Good luck everyone!!

Hey! Congrats on all your acceptances! I was also recently admitted to UPenn--do you know when we would be receiving our financial aid packages from U Penn?

  9. I'm on edge! I'm really hoping we hear back from U Chicago in the next couple of weeks!

In other news, I just heard back from U Penn today. I submitted on 12/31 and they emailed me this morning saying my admissions decision was ready. It was lightning quick, almost suspiciously so! ? I hope U Chicago is the same way!

Has anyone else applied to or heard from U Penn or other schools?

Hey, does anyone know if Chicago still gives decent aid if you apply by April 1? I'm considering applying to more schools but there's no way I'm gonna make it by January 15th...

I was told by a rep from the MSW program that the application deadline should not impact the scholarship package, but I would suggest calling them and asking. The rep said that they give 95% of students at least $5,000 and that the average scholarship given is roughly $20,000, which makes it comparable to the cost of public education. She said that virtually no one receives a full ride and at most, one student per year may receive a full tuition waiver.

  11. Hi guys! I'm in the exact same position! I applied to the full time SSA program on the Dec 1st deadline and I'm having so much anxiety! I think we're guaranteed to hear back by mid-February, but I've also heard that it's possible we might hear back by late January.

Does anyone have any info about acceptance rates? I've heard rumors that it's quite high (50+%), but I don't know what to think.

Best of luck to everyone :)

  12. Hello there! :)

I just submitted my application to the MSW programs at Columbia and U Chicago and I am eagerly awaiting to hear back. I've heard through whispers on the internet that their acceptance rates are quite high (upwards of 70% for Columbia and 58% for U Chicago), but neither program has ever confirmed these statistics. It seems simply too good to be true!

I hope it's true, but I have a very difficult time believing these prestigious institutions would accept such a high rate of students (even though I understand these schools have a lower yield of students who will actually attend).

What do you all think? If you've been admitted to either of these schools, what were your stats? Do you know anyone seemingly underqualified who was admitted?
