Every institution gets a certain amount of SSHRC allocations. A huge school will have more applicants/award recipients, meaning your ability to move up the waitlist is likely more difficult (but may also have more people decline)

I was of the understanding that the quota system doesn't matter once you are in the national round. The quota determines how many students can get advanced from the individual university to the national round. Once you are in the national round, your school has no factor in your acceptance.

Does anyone know how often people decline their awards? Just wondering if I should have any hope of moving up the wait list. I know the CGS-M waitlist can move pretty good since people apply to multiple schools, but idk if that’s the case here…

Once the dust settles a bit, I might create a waitlist thread, as a few of those have existed over the years.

Hi guys! I have been trying to access the site for over an hour now. I got as far as seeing a link called CGS-Doc in the extranet, but when I clicked on it the page timed out. Does the naming on the link show any indication of whether you were successful?

My failed app, also said CGS-Doc.

Well...something to be said about solidarity living with this situation 😅.

I do understand the initial reason to group philosophy with the classical subjects, but surely it's not difficult to know by now that at least half of philosophical theses are way more contemporary and interdisciplinary in areas like ethics of AI, healthcare, etc. Yet we need the expert with philosophical methodology to judge us. (Especially AI Ethics being a massive field now--I don't want to sound like a total sore loser through haha).

I have been told from faculty, that anything with any sort of technical bent doesn't do well at SSHRC.

Most of the reviewers are from the humanities, so they don't understand AI, code, computational methods.

There needs to be some middle ground between SSHRC and NSERC, or SSHRC needs to be better at recruiting reviewers from more disciplines.

  5. I got the email with the link at midnight last night, was able to access the documents to find out that I was not awarded a fellowship (though was recommended) at 5:45 AM ET and haven't been able to access the site since.

Two years ago when I was also rejected, I never remember having this much of an issue accessing the site.

Dealing with 4000 applications at once, is not that much load on a government site, I don't understand why they would allow this sort of situation to happen.

Would someone who previously applied be able to break down how we actually see the results, whenever they become available? What exactly is the extranet? Is that the same portal where we submitted our CVs?

From my vague recollection, the system is separate from the online system we applied to.

In 2021, in early April we got an email saying results would be upload to the extranet soon. A bit after that we got an email with details on how to setup an account on the extranet. At some point after that the results appeared in the extranet, and people here started looking. Later in the month, we got the official email to actually check the extranet for results.

Here is the exact first email text from 2021:

Information regarding your doctoral application will be uploaded toward the end of April to the SSHRC Extranet for applicants.

You will receive a separate system-generated notification with steps on how to activate your extranet account in order to access the information.

If you encounter technical issues in accessing the SSHRC Extranet for Applicants, please contact the Helpdesk at webgrants@sshrc-crsh.gc.ca.

For any other questions, do not hesitate to contact us at fellowships@sshrc-crsh.gc.ca.

    Sincerely,

    The Research Training Portfolio

Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council

Again this was 2021, not sure how it went down in 2022, as I wasn't advanced to the national round last year.

I haven't heard back from mine either.

Just checked in with my program admin and apparently the list of names was decided a few weeks ago. Sadly was not on it. So no SSHRC or OGS for me.

Did you email them for feedback? How long did it take for their response?

You should have an email with a subject starting with "Competition Results - Doctoral Awards", in the email there should be a link to set your password, and you can use that to log in, with your username being your email. Once you're logged in, there should be a letter with your results

Took a few days from when I emailed for the feedback to arrive. You don't get much, just the two sets of scores from each reviewer.

I'm with Architectural Science. I emailed to ask about the annoucement date but have not got reply from the admin yet. Did you receive any notification saying the application was processed, if you don't mind me asking? I have not heared anything back after submited the application form.

Fingers crossed for both of us!

I think OGS is really department / school dependent. Ryerson gets a pool of money, and then they decide how it is given out.

I haven't gotten any emails about anything... concerning... is anyone else in the same boat? I tried following a link from someone in my cohort who just got access to results but when I followed it and entered my email to recover my password, it just said I didn't have any extranet account associated with my email.

I haven't gotten the extranet email yet either.

That's so depressing.. I checked the results last year and found they send out tons of rejection on Mar 31. So I guess I will wait till 3.31 to receive my rejection.

    Best wishes on your others.

Yeah, perhaps they are waiting on some rejections later. There is always a chance that some of the accepted will take another offer.

  12. For the information program I got a rejection last week. I spoke to my potential supervisor and they mentioned it was really competitive and they only admitted 7 people.

Not sure if they have sent out all their rejections yet.

Hi, I am still waiting for the results. Interviewed Jan 26th, told to be patient. Guess nothing left for me this time lol. Have you got the decisions?

Hi folks. I have a dumb question related to SSHRC that I'm hoping someone here might know the answer to.

I've applied to a PhD program -- only one due to the fact that it's in my city and I can't move for the foreseeable future -- and to SSHRC. But as someone who is currently 'unaffiliated' (I finished my MA in 2018 and have been working full-time in an unrelated field since then), I applied directly to SSHRC.

So here's the question: What happens if I don't get into the program but get a SSHRC? Is that even possible? Is there any communication between SSHRC and the university even though I'm not a current student?

    Any insight is greatly appreciated!

I heard that it is possible, and that you can potentially use this funding help bolster your case at a school that you didn't apply to it. I think it depends on a lot of factors, but not all programs fill their PhD programs by the time SSHRC, releases their results.

For those who've got the offer already, did they mention anything about the entry scholarship in the offer? I know it's a early question, and I haven't even got the decision yet, but just trying to compare with other programs I've received already.

The entry scholarships for the MI program are very limited, as it is a professional program rather than a research-based masters. I would say the percentage of people at the Masters level who get funding is very limited. It is why in the end a few years ago I declined my offer for a fully-funded research based programs.

Not to the knock the program, as it professional programs have their value, but one of the drawbacks to them generally is higher tuition rates and less funding.
