  1. We're seeing mass rejections from top schools lol. Makes me nervous.
  2. You'd probably have a better chance if you had applied to the PhD program, I think.
  3. I've realized that I have the option to take Measure Theory on a pass/fail basis, and it would be a non-major elective course. It would be considered voluntary coursework that does not count toward my degree's completion. What do you think of applicants who have Measure Theory on their transcript with a grade of P? Do you think it's worth it?
  4. Do you think it’s still worth it even if I’m not guaranteed to get an A (like A- or B+)?
  5. I’m mostly targetting programs ranked around 11~30. So you’re saying it’s better for me to take methods classes and aim for straight A’s rather than difficult math classes?
  6. Real Analysis is a must-have for a PhD application to a strong statistics program. What about Measure Theory? In general, how do PhD admission committees view applicants that have completed difficult and relevant graduate-level coursework in mathematics? I'm asking this because I'm trying to decide between taking Multivariate Data Analysis and Measure Theory.
  7. @Geococcyx The school is Oregon State University. What do you think? Honestly I don't understand why they are sending out some unfunded offers. Do they really expect me to pay for grad school? Geez. Luckily I got accepted into my safety so this won't hurt too much if I'm rejected here.
  8. The thesis generally starts 3rd semester, so that's only 3 months before PhD application deadlines. This is exactly why I've been debating whether to go the non-thesis route. Thanks for your advice! Once I start the program I will make sure to actively pursue RA opportunities.
  9. How do you interpret this? Do I still have a chance for funding? This is a top 50 school (excluding Biostatistics), top 70 if including Biostatistics. Do highly-qualified students usually reject offers from this tier of schools? You were one of the top applicants to whom no assistantship was offered, though, so there remains a chance, as offers are turned down, that a position could open up for you. We would probably not know this until mid-April, and we will inform you if such a situation arises.
  10. I got accepted into several fully-funded MS programs in Statistics. In all of those programs, students get to choose between thesis and non-thesis track. Non-thesis tracks vary from program to program, but often consist of some extra coursework + a writing project, or a lot of extra coursework + an oral exam. Students also need to pass a qualifying exam after their first year regardless of the track they choose. So my question is: thesis or non-thesis, what are the pros and cons? My goal is to get into a good PhD program after (MS + 1~2 years working in industry). Thank you!
  11. That's really an unusually large pool of applicants for Statistics, damn. It feels like a lot of math-savvy people interested in data science/AI are trying to get into Statistics programs, which are traditionally funded.
  12. Anyone knows what's up with Penn State rejecting a lot of seemingly qualified applicants?
