Then email them and tell them you're currently considering another offer and was wondering when you'd hear back.  Tell them you'd like to know what are you chances and when you'll hear back as you'd prefer to go to their program, but need to know whether you need to consider the other offers serious, soon.

And then, in the background, take your other offers serious.

Going to do that after Spring Break! Thanks for the advice.

What would you say if you were them?  I would say "Good for you.  Take that."  The short answer is: no.  That's petty and will only guarantee your rejection and wouldn't help your acceptance, anyway.  At this point (mid march) it is time you focus on your acceptances and move on from those that haven't gotten back to you.

That's true! Letting them know about my other offers might not help too much unless I say I would definitely accept your offer once you release it (something you say in a love letter when being waitlisted for college). Mostly I just wanna find out if I was silently rejected or I'm still on a waitlist. I've been making plans with respect to my offer, but nothing can be confirmed until I learn all the decisions.

  3. Should I email admission committee of the programs which haven’t got back to me to let them know about my fully funded offer with additional fellowship? I’d really like to move on with an offer to book airfare, sort out summer storage and fall housing, etc. Also, I know people who emailed a program to get their decisions and to find out official rejections wouldn’t be sent out until late April...

@Unconsolidated_Regolith Think there's any chance you could be an RA for Professor 2 after the first year? Maybe you can get an idea of that on the trip. If you want to end up as a professor, having the experience as a TA could help, too.

@Camillalxy How did the open house at Georgia Tech go? Did you get the feeling that all acceptances had already been sent out? I emailed the department's grad info address, but I'm not too optimistic of getting a timely response.

Hey it went okay, there were about 10 admitted students. But they didn’t really tell us how the admission process was like and I forgot to ask... Keep the hope up until it’s rejection!

Stanford is doing interviews (potential grad visit) right now. I was there last Friday. I think there are still more people coming in for interviews so they won't make decisions until after the interviewing process is over.

Hello! So does that mean people who werent invited for interviews were already rejected...I had informal interview with POI last year does that count?

figured WHOI was done - there was that batch of admits last week that seems to be par for the course for them, but Stanford surprises me... there's been no peep about Geological Sciences. They seem like a weird dept though (heavy oil focus, big on the geophysics and ESS) so who am I to know. How are you so up to speed with these programs?

@jimmay hi there! I'm a bit confused, so did @chasebf mean Stanford geological sciences by "deciding a while ago"? Cuz I haven't heard anything either nor anyone posted result. Also I noticed you've been accepted by Cornell, congratulations! I applied to EAS and I'm waiting to hear back. Would you mind sharing with me some details of their admission progress? Like visiting dates, how many rounds of acceptances... Thanks in advance!

  7. Hey I can totally relate! When I applied to undergrad I was rejected from my dream school while my two best friends were accepted and eventually went there (cuz they were also rejected by their dream schools). The worse thing was that we three always studied together between classes so I couldn’t help but hearing them discussing plans after accepting the offer. I knew they didn’t do this to hurt my feeling, but I started practicing piano during that time partly because I wanted to avoid their conversation ?. Now three years have passed and I still hope I could get in there with them, but our friendship didn’t die because of the distance or the fact they might be better than me for that college. More importantly, I have had a great life in my current institution and I’m glad they do in theirs! So it’s okay you feel weird at this moment, but don’t let some strangers’ decision ruin your friendship which might be way more important than you think!

Hey! I heard back from UMich EES a while ago; the admissions committee has already greenlit a group of applicants for official admits. From that point onwards it seems to be up to individual PIs to select the students they want to admit. A lot of them (although not the one I’ve been in touch with) will only make formal offers after they’ve invited students to visit, so maybe there’s an email or phone call on its way to you in the near future! A friend of mine who also applied to this program is visiting in mid-March and will only know if she’s been accepted/rejected after that.

Hey Pangolin, thanks for the info! Just want to be clear, has the admission committee sent out official offers yet or they need to wait for PIs to confirm?

I am, but I believe it's more like we're scheduling a time for me to visit. There aren't specific accepted students weekends I believe (my POI suggested I come Monday for the isotope geochem seminar).

PS I'm also waiting on UMich! Haven't heard nada from them

Good to know, thanks for the info! Fingers crossed for us wrt UMich?

Historically this is the now the time where the bulk of schools start releasing acceptance and/or quasi-acceptance info (e.g. visits).

Just wanted to wish everybody good luck in these next weeks!

Additionally, though it's cliche take care of yourselves mentally, this is a stressful time and can make people far more anxious than it should.

Sending y'all sunshine and power from today's 80-degree-Atlanta!

@Aerinite @airwiz I haven't heard anything from Caltech either (GPS, Geology Option with interest in planetary science)... not a good sign lol. The past five years of grad cafe submissions indicate that they send out a ton of rejections in the middle of Feb (14th and 15) too...

2 acceptances to their geobiology option appeared on GradCafe ages ago in January so I'm probably getting rejections tbh ? But geology folks you have my best wishes!

Ah, so you're the Georgia Tech acceptance, @Camillalxy. Congrats!

I applied there, too. Do you know if they've sent out all of their initial acceptances?

Thanks @magnetite!! I got the email to check status on Monday and was invited to visit Feb.28 - Mar.3 so I'd say there're definitely more acceptances to make before that. I don't know about initial acceptances tho, but I wish you best of luck!

Quote me if you've heard anything back from the last six programs ?

  14. This was two weeks ago. Order in which it happened:

    1. I was having a bad headache the night before because I was afraid I wouldn't be accepted anywhere.

    2. During my shower the next night, I talked to myself like "I can't lose XYZ program" and hoped that I could get an acceptance email as soon as I walked out of the bathroom.

    3. I settled down in front of my laptop and was ready to do homework. The next second an email from POI from XYZ program titled "Congratulations" popped up.

The acceptance into my current undergrad institution was way more dramatic tho so I'll post about it here:

I was waitlisted by Georgia Tech and I went on a trip in May. One night I walked along a river and bought a flower paper lantern with a candle in the middle and I made a wish while I floated it on river. I thanked destiny for everything it had brought to my life and I wished I could enjoy every moment it would present to me. Next morning I woke up and found the acceptance email. I became a fatalist since then and for every wish I've made I'd say the same thing as at that night by the river.

P.S. reviewing my acceptance helps with my anxiety waiting for other decisions a lot!

  15. Taking 16 credit hrs, working ~15 hrs/week as lab TA, running a hiking club, and saving nights for Netflix/books. I've done similar thing before but this semester it just feels like my brain runs slower everyday. Get used to life and I'll be fine I hope :)
