  1. Title is pretty self-explanatory. Some schools SAY 'you can only apply here 3 times,' but I'm wondering if this is actually true or not--is it enforced? Is there a way the school will know if you applied over 3 times? Desperately want to know so that I am clear on whether I should apply to these schools of choice this year.
  2. ok to everyone who just posted (wow, a lot of you - won't bother quoting/tagging) - my friend is a medievalist - the decision came out today - im not sure if my friend got a call or email, but i could ask all in all, he pretty much just slayed everything. what a fucking champ. even prouder to be his friend haha
  3. so uh harvard is out - my friend got in and has been sweeping the board in harvard, yale, columbia lmfao even though im not a shutout, it looks like i'll be declining for this year and applying again next year, anyone else?
  4. ok hold on tea is way better i can't stomach coffee
  5. real random - why are all the usernames tea-related? is everyone obsessed with tea? i like tea too but wtf lmao
  6. Thanks!! Crossing my appendages for you, too. I'm not interested in queer theory per my application, but i'm interested in gender studies, which is pretty close. I'm guessing both are pretty popular... @everyone Also, does anyone know if schools hold off on notifying waitlisted people unless they're off the waitlist and just plain accepted? (and for those who aren't accepted, just give them a later rejection?) does that even make sense, idk. Just curious.
  7. yeah, 'medieval shit' lol according to him, which i think is kinda less crowded
  8. Anyone 20-21st Century American and British? i feel like this is a competitive concentration to choose. Idk if schools have been taking people with this research focus or not this year, anyone else know? i think my parents r in disbelief that I haven’t gotten in anywhere yet, but I’m totally believing it lmao it’s just sad
  9. @barshmie @3131 @every1 it was by email, and no, I didn’t post it. That feels like bad mojo waiting to unleash itself
  10. hey all, yale is out - my one english friend just got into that program too lmao #imfucked
  11. does anyone know what big schools have yet to inform, and which ones already have? i'm not sure i'm keeping track that well and have no idea what to take as implied rejections or not yet
  12. so uh my only english major friend recently informed me that he got into freaking columbia's phd program! just the other day, he was thinking he wouldn't get in anywhere lmao
  13. if only i could get more piercings and tattoos. 1) no funds 2) still in college aka dependent on my parents, and they were pissed af (they're traditional asian parents) currently have a bunch of ear piercings in both ears, as well as a septum. i used to have snakebites (holy hell my parents hated that) and nostril ring. i miss my snakebites, wish i could get them back, but it's bad for your dental health, and professionals won't take you seriously... i want an eyebrow and two nostrils, as well as a navel and more ear ones. i have one wrist tattoo. i'm horrified to let my dad know; i once said the word "tattoo" and he raged for a day and wouldn't talk to me after. there are so many tattoos i want to get and have planned out. fuck. i guess i'll do stick and poke with some needles. anyone have favorite tattoo artists?
  14. i applied to a diff northwestern program and freaked out for a sec. apparently my program's not out yet though @MayliC i played synth in a glam rock band called kurt riley! not for too long though, just a yearish @placeinspace i don't think chicago's decisions have come out yet though. or have they? idk i haven't checked my portals for anything but northwestern as of today.
  15. irrelevant: i just discovered most of my dark circles are caused by my eye sockets and not actually my skin/eye itself. so uh hellz yeah. try tilting your head and forget about apps completely along the way. feelz good.
  16. hell yeah!! what was your band's name/are you on bandcamp, or spotify or itunes? i played in a rock band but it wasn't punk sadly lol. still, the experience was so worth it. i'm an english/psych double major. psych is really interesting, but i don't know if i could handle other people's traumas without falling back into my own. and i definitely don't like it as much as english.
  17. anyone else have family against the english major idea? my parents keep wanting me to do smth with my other major, but truthfully, i don't think they super like either of my majors but WHATCHA GONNA DO IF YOU LIKE ENGLISH? lol
  18. lol my parents r gonna be so dodgy/pissed if i dont get in somewhere
  19. bruh @beardedlady i was just about to say this. like, i think we should all acknowledge the fact that none of us REALLY knows what the fuck is going on (and probably never will) - all the information is so contradictory and, in a way, trivial. even if we knew what was really true, some party would be unhappy, and some other party would be happy. it's just a matter of swapping moods, when i think realistically, we all just want everyone to be happy. but that can't happen. so it might be best just to leave the issue alone. that, or i'm probably projecting haha, because i find that i really don't care what the outcome is for pretty much this apps season.... i probably should care more, but it feels good not to be anxious. who even am i???
  20. i think we're all being a bit too harsh on ourselves and a little bleak... i mean, reality IS gonna be pretty cold for a lot of us in terms of fave programs (and some of us may not be accepted anywhere, which is nothing to sweat even then), but decisions haven't been released yet -- that stage is only beginning it might help to live in the moment for the time being? idk, like maybe go bungee jumping lol if you're an adrenaline junkie? i think it's easy to let anxiety get the best of you, especially if you uh have an anxiety disorder (*sweats nervously*) this is my first time in the grad apps process but i honestly think the key is just being stubborn and embracing the life of an artist.... the whole idea of, "i don't care if i have to friggin wait tables for a year, i'm doing this." idk i know i'm an optimist so i may be shedding undue light here. but also just wanted to share i've been reading a punk history book all of today and stubbornness and suffering and just time are exactly how a lot of the bands became big. not saying most will be "big," but just saying, if you're persistent and a little headstrong, you get places lol im just rambling at this point
  21. no i haven't! it's one of those bands i've heard of but never got around to listening to. yeeeah, i have way too many of those bands on my list. so much i want to do, so little time...
  22. I'm thinking I might use it but in small doses. I want to research punk identity and trauma, which is necessarily of the 20th and 21st centuries, and I'm currently planning to focus on the UK and US, since those are punk's origins. I also know though that punk has become a worldwide phenomenon, and since i know french and chinese, i'm planning to research whatever i can about their contributions to the scenes. i know that asian contributions and scenes are extremely overlooked, so the chinese part should be really useful to bring some recognition to heritage. i've been self-studying chinese at home lately. planning to do the same for french. i don't know if my programs require an ancient language, but the possibility of that is making me second-guess myself--the closest i have to that is old english. (i doubt it though, since i'm applying to contemporary)
  23. Hey all, anyone taking language courses this semester in prep for PhD requirements? I thought I might brush up on the ole chinese again, and now my schedule is looking extra tight.
  24. whoa is infinite jest worth the read after all? i dropped it after 2 chapters this winter but i guess i should go back to it. also when i first saw an image of DFW i was shook he looks like a hippie biker lmfao
