jldstudio got a reaction from hooks31 in Fall 2015 MFA
I'm starting to feel the possibilities out- maybe for next year! I just graduated with an MFA in Art Studio, but as part of that I also self-published two poetry books and my writing practice has become a much bigger part of what I do. I am thinking an MFA would be worth the concentrated time, especially since I am not coming from an English or Creative Writing background. A break out of school might also be even more wise. It certainly was good for my art practice and I would also be interested in teaching the two.
Very glad to see that there are several programs in Virginia where I am headed!

When I went to notify Davis of my decision, they changed my funding again so my final decision ended up being Davis.
For future applicants, I really was not expecting to deal with competing offers but if you are patient it can work out fine and in your favor too! I wish I had applied more selectively and visited more schools.

jldstudio got a reaction from OutWest in MFA programs in the USA with Excellent Funding (as of 2012)
UC Davis offered a TA which covers in-state tuition plus a stipend (stipend amounts make it a wash for paying out of state first yr)
UMD College Park offered a full ride plus stipend
Tyler offered a TA for two semesters which covered 1/2 tuition plus stipend (so it amounts to 25% tuition reduction)
UNC Chapel Hill would cover tuition with the TA
U South Florida was full tuition, fellowship first yr, TA stipend in 2nd and 3rd years

Decided on Davis, it felt like the best fit to me and they offered enough to cover tuition. Still have living expenses but I can deal with that. Good luck to everyone, no matter what the next step is for you! I know this forum helped a lot while going through this mess.

Sorry it's taken so long to respond my jobs are currently on overdrive and it's too hard to reply to the forum from my phone. I'm painter so I don't know that much about video or photo dept. but I've seen some great work develop. I would say that they are actively developing and investing in video/photo and new genres. The art dept. has taken over the building that it used to share with the music department so I know that there's more space for the different media. The building itself is somewhat worn down but nothing too crazy. The art dept. is always that last to get a new building! The painting professors are all pretty cool, they have their cons but nothing too detrimental. I would say that Elizabeth became my favorite after I became used to her stream of conscious answers. Wendy Babcox is a photo/video professor and she's pretty cool. The grad students and undergrad mix pretty easily. You kind of get to know everyone because of the size of the school. The department head always remembers my name and its been a few years. Definitely go on the Paris study abroad trip. I had an amazing experience. If you do end up at USF and you take a class with Lou Marcus, photo prof., sit in the very front or else you won't hear a thing. Miami is about 4 hours away depending on how fast you drive so Art Basel close by. Tampa itself is okay. There are plenty of apartments near the school but you need a car! It's just gets too hot and everything is spread far apart. I can't really recommend staying after grad school since I'm actively trying to get out! I would say downtown St. Petersburg which is 45-1 hour away is great place to hang out.
If you need anymore info just let me know.

jldstudio got a reaction from MSW13 in Waiting it out 2012... 'I've just submitted my application' thread
Now that I have nothing to do but wait, it's proving even more difficult than having applications to work on. I'm going to build some strong patience I hope! That or drive everyone around me crazy too.. Sometimes I'm not worried at all and I think ahead to moving and getting ready, then I switch over to worrying about not getting accepted anywhere.

So far I'm busy researching schools and avoiding my statement. I hope to narrow my school list down and keep it under ten. What I want is to stay near the east coast and find an MFA that is more interdisciplinary. Maybe you know some schools I am overlooking?

Which programs are you guys deciding between? The only school I really have any info to give you on is VCU where I did sculpture for undergrad, feel free to ask.

School list & notes as of June 28---
    MICA (mt royal)
    Columbia
    SVA (flexible within concentrations?)
Hunter (not interdisciplinary, but I am curious about the works on paper program)
    SMFA
    UPenn
    Cornell
    UGA (flexible within concentrations?)
    UIC
    MassArt (2D)
UT Knoxville (Visited. I like tennessee and the heat. The campus and city are appealing overall and the art building seemed average. Do have to pick a department)
