2019 Applicants
effietheant replied to WildeThing's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
Just an update on my end as well -- after contacting the six schools I had left to hear from, I found out I was on hidden wait list for two of them, and rejected from one. I also found out that I have another week or two of waiting to hear back from the final three schools, which are Canadian. Incredibly frustrating because I have pending offers at other schools and I feel bad holding a place that someone else could be taking! -

@swarthmawr I did what you suggested and reached out to all six remaining schools. I've already heard back from four of them - one "hidden" wait list, one rejection, and two let me know they're still deliberating. At this point, I'm just happy to be receiving any news at all! @Matthew3957 Right? I understand how difficult it must be to make admissions decisions, especially when schools receive hundreds of applicants, but there must be a way to go about it a little quicker. It makes everything a mess, imo and it kind of works against them in some ways? Two of the schools I've been accepted to have been "courting" me for the past month, so if a new school comes into the game now, they're almost at a disadvantage... I don't know if that makes sense lol in essence, I don't like the way this process goes down at. all. haha -

Hey, is it normal to still be waiting on SIX schools? I'm potentially looking at a huge move and I applied to some of these on like December 1st so... I'm kind of losing my mind here. Also, does anyone else start to feel a bit resentful toward the schools that take long? ? -

Does anyone have any news on Utah or Florida? I saw some Florida acceptances go up yesterday, so am wondering if I should consider it an implied rejection or not.. ! -

Hey everyone, I was wondering if I can get your thoughts on this. So, I'm Canadian and moved to Boston to pursue an MA. Since graduating, I've been working in Boston for two years. This is my first round of PhD applications. The biggest thought running through my head is, "what if this isn't right?" What if making some changes would have affected all of these results and I would've gotten in to other schools? I'm not ungrateful for my acceptances - in fact, I'm SO grateful for them! - but I did expect more (too naive?) and I had certain dream schools that I was so confident I'd get into... on top of that, I know I applied to schools across North America, but I didn't really ever think I'd be leaving the northeast, let alone likely leaving the country. I'm struggling pretty hard with all of this right now. The idea of leaving Boston is heartbreaking to me and with my UConn rejection late last week, it finally hit me that I'd be totally leaving this area. I don't think I had ever fully wrapped my mind around that. Some non-academia friends keep bringing up that I should just stay and not pursue a PhD... one of my other dreams is to open a bookstore, so they keep telling me to keep working here until I can fulfill that dream. But I'm on a TN work visa which is limiting and I'm currently working as a tutor and a part-time RA. I don't think I'd be able to keep that up for next few years AND a PhD/academia is my dream, as well. I don't know what to do. I guess I just needed to let that all out. Thanks for coming to my TED talk. EDIT to add that I know I have 3 American schools still in the running but I likely won't go to them, even if I get accepted, because my mom's health isn't great and I'd like to stay within driving distance/quick flight distance to her in Montreal. -
How to cope with rejections?

Congratulations!! If you don't mind me asking, did they give you any information on cohort size, etc? I haven't received an email yet and am keeping my fingers crossed for one today, but it's feeling like a no on my end! -

That University of Pittsburgh waitlist post on the results page has me SHOOK. Is it real? Is it fake? Why is there only one? Why hasn't my Pitt portal been updated? What has my life become? Also, here's my pup - Bacardi! He's going to be 9 in May ❤️ -

Does anyone know where that on McGill acceptance came from? I didn't think we'd hear from them until end of the month. -

I have friends who aren't on gradcafe who are also going through this process. One found out last week that she got into Maryland, though not 100% sure on her program though I think it's English. Another friend just told me he heard from Boston College today with an acceptance. -

I'm so confused by the CMU admit! Is the "S19" a typo? I didn't think they had a Spring start date and if they did, wouldn't the semester have already started? Has anyone heard anything? -

Hi all, just wanted to let you know that my friend interviewed with Notre Dame (English) last Friday and they told him that decisions would go out on Feb 8! -
Hey everyone, I know there's a thread where someone asked about visit dates and I thought it would be more clear if we had a topic just for that purpose. Basically, you'd do the following to update the list: You copy and paste the previous list, add your contribution in bolded text, and unbold the previous person's text. This way the last post is a total compilation of all dates. (I borrowed this from one of the other forums in here!) University of Alabama: February 28-March 2 Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL): February 28-March 2 U Wisconsin-Madison: March 3-5 Rice University: March 21-23

Oh god, I didn't even know when they contacted last year... Honestly, I kind of wish these things still worked the "old-fashioned" way with a letter in your mailbox. That way, you're just waiting for the mail to arrive once a day, not constantly refreshing a website or inbox! -

I applied to Carnegie Mellon and I'm getting so anxious! I keep checking the website even though my gut tells me we won't hear anything from them this week. -
