Everything posted by hello! :)

  1. Wow, they called you back? That's very nice of them! I think that a Saturday notification is also possible, if the NDSEG program office receives the list from the DoD late in the work day tomorrow. I hope that won't be the case, but I'm not ruling it out... Anyway, good luck everyone!
  2. I don't think that experience with NREIP would give an applicant any special status, but it certainly provides solid research experience, which can only help in the decision process.
  3. On a more operations level, it seems kind of backwards to allow all applicants to log into the award page and then block access to non-awardees once announcements have been made. I wonder what was their reasoning for doing it this way. If I were in charge of the website, I would have transferred the main login database to the awards login page, but blocked access for everyone. Only after the official awardee list has been made would I change the permissions to allow login access to the winners... Anyway, I'm certainly not an IT admin nor do I do this kind of stuff in my research, so I could just be missing something.

  5. Hey mposa, it's the URL that I got forwarded to after trying to log in. Not sure how to trigger it again and what the heck it's for. I haven't been able to do it again since then.
  6. YEAH! That's what I got on Saturday! But I didn't take a screenshot of it before I refreshed and got "locked out." The page that I got forwarded to after logging in was ndseg.asee.org/award/sessions, but if you go there without logging in, it's a 404 page. It's a little odd because if you type in a random address like ndseg.asee.org/award/test, it's a different 404 page.
  7. I'm making some rather large revisions to a manuscript where I'm just the 2nd author... was waiting for the lead author to finish it up, but it was taking forever for this person to get around to doing it. It's been over a year already! So frustrating!!! Not only would it have helped me in my applications, the significance of the study has decreased as one other group recently reported similar results...
  8. Maybe they want some advanced forum stats... Top 10 Impact Factors bhikhaari 32.143!! up from 30.231 in 2010!newms 16.593kroms 13.298... was 13.111 in 2009!Bukharan 11.391Eigen 9.310...
  9. Why the heck are people voting that post down??
  10. *sigh* I'm not a fan of that possibility either. I hope that we'll hear back by 1pm-ish EDT. Here's to some more hoping!
  11. Here's some more speculation: In 2007, awardees were notified on Monday, April 2, 2007 and requested to respond by Monday, April 9, 2007. In 2009, awardees were notified on Tuesday, March 31, 2009 and requested to respond by Tuesday, April 7th, 2009. Based solely on two data points alone, it seems that people are given one full week to either accept or decline the NDSEG fellowship. This year, according to NeuroJoeBruin's c&p, awardees were requested to respond by Tuesday, April 26, 2011. I wonder if the award emails were actually suppose to go out on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, but someone accidentally sent them on Saturday...
  12. I agree. good summary. I would give you a +1, but I've used up all of my positive votes for the day!
  13. rofl... looks sorta like a screenshot of the one posted by fortytwo. (not saying it is or isn't, tho. The font sort of looks different, I think... I'm just going to say that I'm going a little nuts... is all.)
  14. haha, I agree. I'd really like to see someone who has actually been around gradcafe for awhile confirm that they've received notification from NDSEG. Until then, I'm skeptical.
  15. Well, that was weird. I tried logging in again, but now I too get a stupid red box that says my email or password is incorrect.
  16. When I logged into the award page it said something like this in big red letters enclosed in a box: "The change you are trying to make isn't allowed. Maybe your account does not have the right privileges..." Did anyone else get this?
  17. And please never change your avatar! -__- That fox is so strange.
  18. Not to say that isn't a possibility, but it's also possible that in this case they wanted to keep the news quiet until the decision to hire becomes more certain. It's pretty embarrassing to say that one's been accepted, only to find that it's not true... or if the person ends up declining the position. So I think there's incentive to keep quiet, for the sake of the parties involved (including coffeecoffee, who might base her/his decision off of this).
  19. It's a good place to start, but you're right about there being slight differences... Just something to be aware about if there comes a time to make the transition. I can't comment on the specific differences though, since I've never personally used Octave. Good luck!
  20. Just because the Matlab program is built around the concept of matrices, it doesn't necessarily mean a course in linear algebra would boost one's facility to pick up the language. For those who have little to no programming experience, I would recommend an introductory course in java or something, offered at most community colleges. As was1984 said, it's important to gain a theoretical understanding of computer science if one wants to eventually become a proficient programmer; it's less important to study the specific math that Matlab performs. You'll probably find scripting in Matlab much easier if you already know concepts such as data structures, data types... Do you know what's the difference between a cell array and a matrix? What are structure arrays typically used for? These are important concepts that will come up if you were to write your own code. Of course, I'm not saying that learning linear algebra won't help you. It's great general knowledge to have, especially in cognitive neuroscience research.
  21. My favorite reaction was, "I'm so upset for you; I'm going to go punch a squirrel." Normally I love squirrels, but at that moment, I was happy that a squirrel was going to be punched in my name.
  22. That's true, but my impression is that if the student later takes additional upper division courses in Behavioral Neuro, Cognitive Neuro, Neuropsych, etc. and gets an A, she/he will likely be fine.
