  1. Definitely due diligence! Even with that awesome offer, it would be good to measure the social climate and see how you jive with your POI's. Everyone I have met on my visits so far had a different personality than how I knew them from their research. My aims for mentorship were realigned. Besides, you have worked hard to earn those invitations, and owe yourself the honor of seeing with your own eyes the fruits of your labor! ❤️
  2. Well, you have until April without any risk of losing your (amazing-32k-holy crap) offer if you wanna wait. Temple sounds awesome, but the visit is great idea-I went on two visits so far and both times everything was different than I imagined it (in a good way)...
  3. Dear Thread, please help! Which of these schools, based on what you've seen/heard, has the best reputation for landing tenure track jobs at R-1's (in a Mass Comm Department) post-graduation? 1. U WISCONSIN MADISON 2. UNC CHAPEL HILL 3. U INDIANA BLOOMINGTON (Please assume that they are all offering a competitive financial packages, have faculty doing research I am passionate about, and that I will work my ass off.) Thank you in advance to anyone who can chime in. ❤️ -Dannie
  4. I contacted them because I hadn't heard from them either. They said admissions decisions come at the end of February! On the additional-being that they let people know so late in the game, it seems like they wouldn't do interviews, but idk..
  5. That is fantastic! Congratulations!!
  6. Well, to be fair, they let me know early because I got a special award (probably because I was first generation, which gets consideration similar to that of racial minorities), but the actual contract that I sign and send back to the grad school just came. Also, I think you are rhetoric and I am mass comm-we may be on completely different timelines. My instincts tell me it's too early in the game to assume you won't get a financial offer. ❤️
  7. Official Update: UGA: Accepted with assistantship funding UWMadison: Accepted with fellowship funding Stanford: Rejected (haha-not surprised..) Penn State: Interview went great. UNC Chapel Hill: Interview went great. UPenn Annenberg: Rejected UMichigan: Rejected UI Bloomington: No News Yet-contacted them and they said decisions go out in late Feb.
  8. UPenn rejected me on Valentine's Day. It was my #1, but that's okay-I've been fortunate to get some acceptances from programs that I really admire. Still stung though.. Any lucky people in here get an acceptance or a waitlist?
  9. Me too...I keep lurking in Gradcafe instead of doing my homework because I can't stop thinking about Penn. I got in to Madison as well-they sent a financial award letter on the 8th- 4 years with some fellowship years. I'll be honored to attend any of the places I applied-I really admire them all-but Penn's long wait feels almost like a drama device! I got rejected by UMich yesterday, I hope it's not foreshadowing Annenberg!
  10. Hey everyone! I just came back from Penn State and wanted to put it out there for next year's applicants/readers of this thread that their resources and faculty exceeded my expectations. It was my first time visiting a Big 10 institution and it was impressive. Great people-super friendly/collaborative environment, nice facilities (beautiful Carnegie building on historic part of campus next to the main library). The PhD students were getting faculty mentorship for various grants and Fulbrights and succeeding with their applications. Also-the standard acceptance package: stipends were 20k, tuition and student fees included, excellent health insurance, plus optional summer stipend and a 1k per year travel money included with option to apply for extra. Cheers!
  11. Hi there! I just heard from Michigan-rejection. I was cool with it-it's a great school but wasn't a great fit. Congratulations on your acceptance!!!
  12. Oh, man-here's hoping! Lemme know if you hear something and I'll do the same! ?
  13. Hi All! New to the thread! I'm a mass comm PhD applicant focused on international/political comm. I applied to: UWMadison, UMichigan, UIBloomington, UGA, UPenn, Penn State, Stanford, and UPenn Annenberg. Responses so far: UGA: Accepted (my home program so I found out early) UWMadison: Accepted (funding letter in 1-2 weeks) (I learned some inside news on who gets $$ there-see my post to Emma Friday in this thread) Stanford: Rejected (haha-not surprised..) Penn State: Flying up for interview 2/7 UNC Chapel Hill: Flying up for interview 2/14 UPenn Annenberg (BIG DREAM): No News Yet, Ms. Murray says news comes out mid-February. UMichigan: No News Yet UI Bloomington: No News Yet STATS: Undergrad GPA: 3.92, Grad GPA: 4.0, GRE: 310-V163/Q147. (I know-I bombed my Q...I have a lot of quant research experience and all A's in math on transcripts, including phD level-hoping that will compensate) A dozen or so academic awards and research grants, years of teaching experience and good research experience. One co-authored publication and two theses. A McNair Scholar (low income/1st gen) and speak a couple of foreign languages. I'm so thankful to be in any of the programs I applied to-they are all wonderful, but UPenn Annenberg is my dream school. I don't have connections to any faculty, but my research interests are an exact fit. I'm a total mess waiting to hear...checking emails all day everyday even though I know it's too early. Anybody have news from or any inside knowledge on Annenberg? Good luck! -Dannie
  14. Hi Emma (and all)! I just joined in. Some updates from UWM and UNC on my end-I was set up for an "interview" with UWM that was actually an acceptance on January 28th. They said funding news will go out first and second week of February, but they are focused on teaching experience because they need TA's. Also, I received an interview invitation to UNC for the interview as well! It's a shame you are too far away to attend-it would be nice to have met someone before showing up! On a side note-my big dream is UPenn Annenberg...still waiting..
