I wait until they tell me to call them by their first name explicitly OR if they sign their emails with just their first name. (If they sign with their initials, I still call them Dr. So-and-so.)

This is my second time applying for PhD programs. The first round, I lived in the same city as my recommendation writers and it was easier to buy them thank you gifts (I graduated and my final grades were already submitted.) I wrote them each a thank you card and bought them each specialty coffee and a nice notebook. For a professor I was really close with, I also bought him an academic book recently released that was in his field. However, right now I am living abroad and I am not sure what to do for my writers that is thoughtful without breaking the bank-- send something wrapped via amazon, flowers, etc. Looking for suggestions!

Short answer: Yes! Longer Answer: I have lived in Berkeley for only about a month and a half last summer, but from what I remember, there was always something happening somewhere in Berkeley/Oakland/SF.
-
I would just add that the BART is significantly more expensive than the Boston T or NYC Subway where you pay the same price regardless of where you enter and exit the stations. It is even more expensive than the Paris Metro. One-way from Downtown Berkeley to Embarcadero (SF) is over $4.

I declined admission to Rutgers PhD in African-American History. I received a very positive response from my POI-- wishing me luck at the program of my choice, suggesting a history association to join, and hope to work together in the future. I am waiting on NYU (same field) because I'm not sure if I should preemptively withdraw.
-
In this case, I might also enjoy watching the suggested montage. ?
-
For the record, I was not being arrogant. Since I have already accepted an offer from another program and many universities have a literal "withdraw application" button on their portals, one might understand the well-intentioned nature of inquiring about taking my name out of the hat.

Not for rank 15-20 unless the MA was highly funded/ I could easily afford it without loans. I did turn down a PhD from a 40s/50 range for a MA 1-5 rank in 2016. Now I am going to a 1-5 rank in the fall.
-
How did you withdraw your application? I didn't see an option on the portal like there is for other schools. I'd like to withdraw mine as well
-
I have seen rejections but I haven't seen anyone post about a waitlist. I hope that you get in!!
-
I just accepted an offer moments ago. Once you officially accept an offer, you should receive information shortly regarding registration and next steps. As far as a "plan or direction," are you referring to letting your POI know that you will be attending the program? I would definitely let your POI know if you made your decision.

I officially accepted my offer to Berkeley in US History. I hope this opens a spot up at Rutgers and possibly NYU! It feels wild to know I will finally begin my PhD in a few months. ?
-
HoS seems to have a separate process from the history department, so you might be right. I have less hope for myself because there a few acceptances posted for the "regular" history department already. Good luck!
-
I wish they would release the rejections already so that we can accept any offers we might have and open spots up for other people.

Coursework is super heavy because it's a 1 year program. Fall- 2 classes with CU faculty (fly in from NY) and 1 or 2 courses at French universities (in French or English language). Spring - 2 courses with CU and 2 outside classes. Then in the summer there is a short but intensive course with a CU professor. The thesis is due in Sept. 50-75 pages. It might not seem like a lot, but you write a lot of papers and you need to find your own time to research for your thesis.

Yes, I did the Columbia MA in Paris 2017-2018 year. This is a copy/paste from my acceptance letter: "On behalf of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of Columbia University, I am pleased to offer you admission as a candidate for the degree of Master of Arts in the History and Literature Program at Reid Hall in Paris, beginning in Fall 2017. As a student in the program, you will be enrolled full time in the Fall 2017 and Spring 2018 semesters. We are pleased to offer you a 25% tuition scholarship in the amount of $13,589. Your program will provide you with information about your specific package of support and how it will be disbursed. The estimated tuition for 2017-2018 is $54,356 ($27,178 each for the fall and spring terms)." The department is tiny and helps you to find housing. The program has one option for au pairing-- I babysat for about 8-15 hours a week and got a studio for free. However, I know that it works differently this year, and the au pair has to pay a bit each month. There is also a work option for tutoring French students that pays between 400-500 euro a month.

I did the MA in Paris last year actually, and I received 25% fellowship. I got this "25% off" offer without applying by January. I just forwarded my app to the MA dept after it was rejected for PhD. It could be worth it if you get funding and are considering among MAs. I chose it over Carnegie Mellon PhD in history. However -- it is really expensive so if you do not get any funding, I wouldn't recommend it.

mediumatcha replied to FiguresIII's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
I'm in Paris as well but I applied to History Phds! -
For those still wondering about the Harvard form "terms and conditions of acceptance" on the portal, I emailed Harvard and this was their reply:
-
@HardyBoy Do you think that all of the Princeton acceptances have been sent out?
-
My name is at the end of the alphabet and I have no update yet either... ?
-
I received this last night as well (I am on European time right now) and I checked back a few hours later and it disappeared. For me, I didn't have a status update to go along with it though.
-
I have been overthinking everything so thank you for responding! Do you think that I should ask the admissions advisor who emailed me as well?

I just received my funding information via email for PhD in history: "The department will provide you fellowship funds totalling $28,500, plus tuition, fees, and health insurance." Does this mean that 28,500$ is my living stipend and is in addition to all tuition and fees? I ask because some schools call the total funding a "fellowship" and list the living stipend explicitly as one part of said fellowship. Thank you!
