  1. @NothalfgoodYou're right that when I project myself 3 years in the future I smile just a bit more in the sunny weather of Florida, and the placement of many Rutgers students into finance is unappealing. Maybe that's what really matters. Thanks for the feedback
  2. Thanks guys. I'm feeling more split than ever now ?. I guess I'll need to spend some time reflecting on my priorities / interests.
  3. @bayessays Who would you say are the supserstars at RU / UF? I know Rutgers has Cun-Hui Zhang and Florida has Doss and Hobert. Dunno if I'm missing anything. Thank you for the thoughtful reply
  4. Hey all, I have applied to and been accepted to several Statistics PhD programs for the Fall and am unsure how to begin to narrow down which school I should consider. The programs I've gotten admission into: Rutgers, Stony Brook, Florida, Boston, Virginia Programs I haven't heard from yet but still might consider: Rice, Northwestern. I have no idea where to begin in deciding which program to attend! Everywhere except for Stony Brook seems reasonably funded considering their respective locations. I am interested in pursuing an academic career (or at least would like to not rule it out), so I'm sure the rankings of the departments/fame of particular faculty members is important. As far as research interests are concerned, I am not particularly set in stone. I lean applied and am broadly altruistically motivated, though this could manifest in different ways (many areas in biostatistics, spatiotemporal modeling for climate, longitudinal analysis for track disease spread, etc). I enjoy the weather of the Florida, but the intellectual and cultural community that you find in Boston is also appealing. In summary, I'm convinced that graduate school doesn't have to be a miserable time. I want to have fun and do good for the world one day, and I hope to go to the place that helps me leverage my 20's in the best way to do that (if that means becoming an academic, then optimizing for academia. Same for working for Govt., etc.). I know that this is a broad problem to ask strangers on the internet for help with, but I'm just looking for some guidance. I;m sure there are many unknown-unknowns and lapses in my reasoning that I'm unaware of. I'm happy to flesh out any questions you have as well. Thank you
  5. I think that would be great. Potentially we could get input on deciding between schools as well.
  6. I heard back from Pitt a while ago. They've been pretty pushy about making a decision so I think they're waiting to see if they'll have the resources to accept more students.
  7. Still haven't heard anything to NC State. Does anyone know if they're still sending them out?
  8. "Measure, Integral and Probability" by Kopp and Capinski is a good choice. It was written with self study in mind, and have a probabilistic bent to it's teaching.
  9. @Geococcyx I likely would be working with Prof. Harry Crane if I attended. I'm almost certain he is the person who let me in, as we have talked in the past.
  10. Just got accepted to Rutgers PhD Statistics program. I must have been in the first round because there's no word from any other schools yet. What are people's opinions of the program? I've heard that is is underrated in the rankings due to it's small size, but I don't know much.
  11. Undergrad Institution : Texas A&M Major(s): Statistics GPA: 3.65 (had a very poor freshman year) Minor(s): Mathematics, Philosophy Type of Student: Domestic, White Male Courses taken and taking: Calculus I (D, retook and got an A), Calculus II (B), Calculus III (A), Foundations of Mathematics (A), Differential Equations (A), Linear Algebra (Q, A), Advanced Calculus (A), Statistical Computing (A), Mathematical Statistics I (A), Mathematical Statistics II (A), Introduction to Linear Models (A), Capstone Project (Taking), Real Analysis I (Taking), Machine Learning (Taking) My final semester I plan on taking Real Analysis II, Numerical Methods, and Experimental Design GRE General Test: not taken, what should I aim for? Grad Institution: N/A Programs Applying: Statistics Research Experience: 1. Did time series data analysis on astronomical data with statistics professor 2. Did research with a (different) statistics professor on Machine Learning methods 3. Directed study with logic professor on computability theory Pertinent Activities or Jobs: TAed and TAing stats courses. Letters of Recommendation: One professor from stats department with specialization in time series, strong; One associate professor from the stats department; One associate professor at the philosophy department, I took two directed studies with him and got an A, strong. Research Interest: Mathematical Statistics, Time Series, Stochastic Processes, Network Science. Applying to where: Illinois, Texas A&M, UT Austin, Rice, UC Irvine, Pittsburgh, Ohio State, Rutgers, Boston, Northwestern, Maryland (Reach?) I'm really unsure of the type of school I am competitive for. Recommendations/ adaptations to my list are appreciated. My goal is to go somewhere that sets me up i a good position to stay in academia after graduation. I'm sort of worried about my GPA and whether the schools I'm considering are realistic.
  12. @Stat PhD Now Postdoc Thanks for the response. I was considering replacing NCSU and PSU with Rutgers and Virginia anyways, because I know some people there. Also, Is there any particular way I should go about broaching the topic to a LOR writer, considering none of them knew me my Freshman year? I've spoken with the prof. I'm doing research with about how I've changed since the first semester, but I'm unaware of how I might ask him to emphasize those ideas in a letter.
