Can you explain in more detail how to try this?

And .......... is anyone else paranoid that SSHRC just *lost* their application since it's disappeared from the webapp interface where we submitted it?

Here is the link to sign in to the extranet:

    https://influence.nserc-crsng.gc.ca/_Layouts/CASD.CustomLogin/Login.aspx?ReturnUrl=%2f700000%2fA%2f_layouts%2fAuthenticate.aspx%3fSource%3d%2F700000%2FA%2Fdefault%2Easpx%2F&Source=%2F700000%2FA%2Fdefault.aspx%2F

Username is the email you use with SSHRC. I reset my password and eventually I was able to sign in. At first I kept receiving a 'denied access' message, but then I tried it on Chrome and I was able to access by account.

Do we have any idea how to expect the results to come through? Reading the last year's thread left me confused about that! **ETA: Like, email, or do we have to set up an online portal, or...?

It's probably through the extranet. If you have an account from previous years, you might be able to sign in. I have one from my PhD award and I was able to sign in. There is a line that says 'Your documents will be displayed shortly. You will be notified once they are available.'  If you don't have an extranet account, you should receive an email at some point with a link to it and instructions on how to access it. Unless the procedure has changed.

The good news: SSHRC is not as fickle as hiring committees, who tend to select the candidate that is no one’s top choice but everyone concedes is a good compromise.

The committee is largely evaluating the relevance and viability of your project. Journal publications matter, yes, but SSHRC is increasingly fixating on “public scholarship,” so they are turning greater attention to if/how your work can engage the public. Even for scholarship in very niche areas, they want to see that you are able to connect what you’re doing to public debate and (yup) media engagement. Remember SSHRC is an arm of the Canadian government, so the more exposure your work can get – the more your work can promote the govmt’s image as progressive and community-oriented - the more they want in. Since the postdoc is a career bridge, and there are fewer academic careers and more academics entering the private sector, they also want to see that your project is something that can get you employed, simply put.

Reviewers also favour applications that have a little “pizzaz” – a unique voice and confidence. They are not well-inclined to applications that harp on oppression and are more-and-more interested in projects that speak to empowerment and possibility.

The CLEAR organization of the POW is key. Reviewers favour applications with very explicit subheads.

If relevant they also want to see that you have contingency plans in case there’s another pandemic or the like.

With all of this said! Every application is different and there is no single recipe for success. The committee also needs to spread awards across a range of disciplines, fields, and themes, and some projects are slam dunks simply for being nothing like the others.

And I agree - six months is an INSANE amount of time to wait. Four days left in February........ARGHHH

Thank you for these insights, they are very helpful. I also applied to the FRQSC postdoctoral competition, and in that application, there were questions that explicitly asked about leadership and communicating with the public, as well as whether our project contributes to the UN's Sustainability Development Goals, etc. I feel like I have a better chance with that application (although I have to wait until the end of April!) because of these things. I did show them in the SSHRC application, but I didn't emphasize them as much. If I'm not successful for SSHRC or FRQSC this year, I know how to reframe my application for next year! Thank you!

I heard rumours that SSHRC is looking to change its process to only allow direct applicant-> second year students apply (something to do with making NSERC and SSHRC more similar), and that this could become effective this August or the year after. I'm also in third year, so part of the disappointment for me is I'm not even sure if we can reapply in September if the changes happen to be real. SSHRC will announce in August what their eligibility requirement is (this was stated on our letters). Not saying this to bum anyone out, but I am glad that someone notified me of these potential changes so I'm not in total shock come August if that happens. But in light of COVID-19 I can see them hopefully delaying these changes.

Looking forward to seeing more committees and waitlist ranks so we can hopefully makes some sense of this. I found an email someone posted last year from SSHRC that said waitlist is committee specific. And if we look at the stats posted they kept 22-23% success rate in each committee. So I would guess that maybe waitlist is committee specific, and someone needs to give up SSHRC in your committee to move up the waitlist so they can keep a fair distribution across fields. I am just guessing though!

If they do decide to make this change, then I hope they delay for another year! It would be so disappointing not to have that last chance. I can still apply for FRQSC, but I haven't had luck with that either. I ranked 5 in my committee, but they only gave out 3 awards. And there is no waitlist. This process is so frustrating! I guess I'll wait and see what happens.

Also, since the waitlist is dependent on more funding becoming available (according to my letter), is this line from the support for students affected by COVID-19 legislation relevant? Or do you think this has already been factored into what they've allocated?

"The government will extend expiring federal graduate research scholarships and postdoctoral fellowships, and supplement existing federal research grants, to support students and post-doctoral fellows, by providing $291.6 million to the federal granting councils."

    Source: https://pm.gc.ca/en/news/news-releases/2020/04/22/support-students-and-new-grads-affected-covid-19

I think the more funding available refers to if someone has a Vanier (or something similar) and declines the SSHRC.  I'm not sure about the funding from Covid-19 legislation, but my guess is it would have already been factored in since it's for existing federal grants.

Thanks for creating! 12.8/20 in committee 5.

You must be close. I don't remember who, but I think there was someone in committee 5 with a score of 13.5/20 or around there. Hopefully someone with a Vanier will decline and you'll move up! I'm in my third year, so I know it's disappointing. I have one more year to try this again.

Mind sharing what department you’re in if that’s ok? I’ve had my log in info since Wed and nothing and it’s driving me nuts ?? also at Concordia in Education

I'm in the HUMA program, but political science is my 'home' department where my supervisor is and my area of research. Hope you have an answer soon! The uncertainty of not knowing is the worst. Good luck!!

  8. Just received my results (Concordia student) and I was waitlisted with a score of 11.7/20 in committee 5. I'm going to start a new thread for those who are waitlisted so that we can hopefully see if there is any movement with the waitlists.

  9. 3 minutes ago, leelof said:

Concordia here too. I got my log in details Wed too, and nothing. I emailed my supervisor to see if she can find out through the grapevine cuz I was too chicken to go straight to awards office lol. Let me know if they get back to you. Best of luck to us both!!

The waiting part is the worst, which is why I decided to ask.  I just want an answer at this point so I can move on!

This was the awards office reply:

Due to the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, SSHRC has put in place a new process to communicate results to applicants. This includes a new platform: the SSHRC Extranet for Applicants. Applicants will receive, via email, information on how to activate their account on the site. Once the result documents have been uploaded, applicants will receive a subsequent email inviting them to view the results. To follow-up with SSHRC you may contact them at fellowships@sshrc-crsh.gc.ca.

I also sent an email to our program coordinator, but no response yet. My supervisor actually sent me an email yesterday to see if I had any results yet and asked me to keep her updated, so I if she does end up receiving any news, maybe she will update me.

My latest theory on notifications is that they may be notifying those at the top and bottom of each committee and making their way inwards. Because we have seen SO many 'big sshrc' winners yesterday and today, only a handful of regular sshrcs (from what I can see?), and unsuccessful applicants.

    * edit: I guess this doesn't account for waitlists applicants, so maybe I'm totally off on this

I've given up on trying to figure it out. I have noticed as well that a lot of the SSHRC winners yesterday and today were the 'big SSHRC' and not very many of the regular ones. And then some people who received the extranet email today are receiving results, yet, I received my email on Wednesday and still nothing. Some universities have results (or at least claim to ) and others don't. I've been searching for some type of pattern, but I honestly don't know if there is one.

Has anyone who received results today (not posted yesterday and checked today) actually won? Getting the vibe winners were yesterday and waitlists are today but I am hoping not.

I was wondering the same thing. I still don't have any  results

So I guess that if I don't hear from my uni today, I'll just assume I was not successful.

I don't think that's the case. My department forwarded 13 and I know at least 2 of us still don't have an answer. I don't think they would tell some of us and not everyone (we do talk to each other)

From my observations, nobody has received new login information today. And people who received login information yesterday, found their results posted approx. 24 hours later.

I received log in information yesterday, but still no results. Same with another person in my cohort

Do you folks think there are any concerns with attempting to sign in before being assigned an account by email? I'm committee 5, and seeing some presumable committee 5 winners here post is finally starting to make me a bit anxious! Also the fact that it's Thursday afternoon and still no sign-in email is making me feel like some of us won't hear until late Friday.

I'm in committee 5 and I received sign-in information yesterday, but still no results

Where do you see the number of awards given per committee ? I can only see my ranking

It's in the letter part that says they could only awards to so many people. It's not in the section with our ranking.

Im sorry to hear that.. Fingers crossed for SSHRC. What was your Committee?

Political Science, I think it was committee 6. I don't remember. It's somewhat expected as I changed my major in second year from political science to education and then September, I went back to political science with my original supervisor (and not a clear plan on what I was doing).  My supervisor said my proposal was definitely strong, but I also think that the switching back and forth has affected the relevant experience since I had a year away from political science.  Experience was my lower score. However, this was my highest ranking so far!

You will get through it and it will be great at the end. I am in my third year at Concordia's Huma department and my committee was Visual Arts.

Me too! Except not visual arts. And congratulations! I'm so happy that you got it!

Does anyone who does have access to the Extranet have any issues signing in? I'm wondering if the server has crashed or something...

I just checked and I was able to sign in.

yea, waiting for 2021 to pop up there. However, if my name is not on it, then it is clear it has been rejected..

Yes, if it's not on, I assume it's a rejection. Hopefully your name will be there!

  20. 19 minutes ago, nomadartist said:

Good luck on your SSHRC as well! I wish I was eligible for it:D what does that mean if your name is not on the list ?:P  Do you mean this link to the repertoire? https://repertoire.frq.gouv.qc.ca

Thank you! Yes, that does look like the link to the list. If your name isn't on it, I assume that you didn't get it. However, don't panic if you don't see it now, our competition is 2021. The 2020 is last year (I think it is!)

Hi everyone, I have baked two cakes already today and counting until the results are out! I have a question: If one doesn't see the change on their portal after midnight, does it mean that it has not been accepted? Can someone verify this?

The waiting is so stressful! I also applied to SSHRC and they are going to begin releasing results tomorrow as well. I can't wait until this is over!

I don't think it means anything if your results aren't ready at midnight. On their website, it says that if your name is on the list (I assume the results list, which I think will be posted tomorrow) and haven't received your letter in the portal after a few days to contact them.
