  1. I specifically got this information from an email titled "Applicant FAQ" in November 2020.
  2. Has anyone had any contact with "National Renewable Energy Laboratory"? I am on held and wondering when or if I will be contacted by them or what I can do to reach out further. Any ideas what their process is?
  3. I got general admissions acceptances from University of Michigan, NYU Tandon, New Jersey Institute of Technology, Virginia Tech (fully-funded, no mention of GEM at the time), Northeastern, Stony Brook. I later got GEM University Fellowships from: NYU Tandon and Northeastern Then GEM Associate from: Virginia Tech. I think I've had my decisions for 3 weeks or so now. For NYU I was informed via email, never had any changes to my portal where as Northeastern did not contact me at all but I eventually saw a portal change to (willing to admit as GEM fellow).
  4. Apparently I am on matched again... no clue when this happened cause I threw in the employer towel a while ago. Maybe there is hope for a summer internship ? Anyone else who was previously told they were not going to get an employer, now suddenly matched?
  5. Hi! Yep that's me. Maybe we've met already if you attending the GEM info session last Friday! So far I have not been able to find any active groups for VT grad students, I've only seen an inactive 2020 group. Maybe its still too early.
  6. Hello All! I really want to meet other admitted students and I've yet to see a post for VT so here it is. ? I was recently accepted, Electrical Engineering MS (thesis-option). Does anyone know if there is a GroupMe or Facebook group for VT admitted grad students?
  7. I probably wouldn't reach out again then until maybe later in March but I'm not sure. NYU gave me a deadline of March 18th to accept or decline the GEM offer so as students accept or decline, they may extend more offers. I'm 85% sure that I'll be declining so hopefully my offer will go to students like you!
  8. Regular admission is definitely separate from GEM awards. (Not sure if you meant that you have not been regularly admitted yet) NYU accepted me for regular admissions (12k scholarship, not full tuition) and then earlier this week, their representative sent me a GEM offer. They specifically stated that is was a GEM University Fellowship offer so no stipend. Northeastern did not contact me directly and I only recently noticed on the portal that they changed the status to "Willing to admit as GEM fellow" but no indication of what that exactly means. Then I have some schools who have either ignored my emails or have provided very confusing information. It may be that some of them were waiting for the official notice as to who is getting employers and who is not before awarding additional sponsorships (assuming they prioritize people with companies :/). With that theory, you could definitely still have a chance! I was fortunate enough to receive a fully funded offer from another school without GEM (and I'm now contacting them to see if I can get GEM money as well aha...) so I won't lose sleep over this. Just mourning the wasted time on 5+ phone calls. I would absolutely recommend reaching out to GEM representatives at the schools you were admitted to or applied to.
  9. Email just went out letting people know that they did not get the employer sponsorship. I'm just confused because a company that I interviewed with is on "held" with my application and I have not gotten any response from them. What a process this has been.
  10. I had a weird interaction with them where they said that they emailed me but I never got it. I'm not sure if this could have happened to other people as well. I interviewed with them almost two weeks ago and have not heard back yet. I guess the night is still young but I think I'm going to email them tonight for follow-up. I actually just received a University sponsorship from NYU earlier this week and also today I was scrolling through the schools on the GEM website and saw that the status for Northeastern changed to "willing to accept as GEM fellow" but I'm not sure when that change occurred (no email from them). Looks like decisions are coming out slowly. I did not apply to any of the schools that people have mentioned so far but I'm sure you all will start to hear back very soon!
  11. Has anyone been in contact with Georgia Tech Research Institute?
  12. Do you all think it's an irrational fear to feel, "What if no school decides to take me as a GEM fellow even though they admitted me?" So far I've been accepted to 4 schools who have yet to mention GEM. I've started reaching out to each one to find out their process. One of them said that they make those decisions in mid-March which feels so late. Does having a company sponsor increase your chances? I feel like if you admit a prospective GEM student, would you really just not give them the fellowship if they even got a company? I'm just so anxious ?
  13. I recall them saying that if your account does not show any employer activity by March, they would let you know that you have not gotten a GEM fellowship so I imagine that also around that time, they would also be dealing with the associate fellowships. One person from Northeastern implied that schools may wait to see if you get an employer first before they make any offers for GEM.
  14. Yep, according to GEM this notification does not really mean anything and is just an error. They mentioned that they would remove the feature because it causes confusion.
  15. The employer status should be under the recommendations box, in a box named "Other Information". Otherwise, GEM has removed he feature that allowed us to see the name of employer.
  16. Did not apply to ASU but this is happening to me for Virginia Tech. I think some schools are just much slower than others. I applied to VT on Jan 15th and they have not approved me where as NYU approved me before I even submitted my final application. Very weird but I don't think we have to do anything (yet).
  17. Not only have I gained admissions to two schools this week but I also just got an interview with a company (finally!) That webinar discouraged me so much but now I'm feeling the hope again ? Stay positive everyone! You got this!
  18. This has happened to me twice and when I asked GEM they told me to just ignore it aha.. ?
  19. Hey everyone! An email just went out about a mandatory webinar. Make sure you sign-up! Hopefully we can get more answers/clarification there ?
  20. It seems like GEM is letting anyone they think you'd be a match for, look at your profile. They started with my top 3 and now I have no clue who else I'm matched too. Released just means that the company is no longer holding your application. I've gone from held->released and now I'm matched again (been matched for a while now) but I'm not sure which company it is cause I missed the "eye" icon. GEM has said that we should really just ignore the employer status. I think the only thing its good for is when it says "accepted". Otherwise, its just many people viewing the application over and over. Released definitely does not mean end of process! I've been released and unmatched many times but then I go back to matched. I think its likely that companies are trying to view all applicants first and create a short list for people that they are interested in and depending on how those interviews go, they may reach out to more people later. (This is just my speculation). I don't think anyone will have any real answers to this because of how ambiguous GEM is being. Hope this can help in any way. We are all still in it to win it!
  21. So... has anyone ever been released, but also got a notification on the website saying "Congratulations <company> have responded to your application". I'm wondering if they just made a mistake with viewing my application and released it instantly lol... ;~;
  22. There used to be an "eye" icon next to your application tab but it comes and goes over time. Right now its gone so no one is able to check their employer.
  23. Is there any benefit to applying to GEM schools earlier/ pre-Christmas for Masters? I'm wondering if I should be rushing applications now as a Masters student? Also should we mention that we are applying for GEM on our application or connect with the GEM University Rep before hand?
  24. The "eye" icon is back as of right now. I just checked and my application is now matched with a different national laboratory (still in my top 3). I'm curious if this is happening with other types of employers as well, or just with your top 3 in general, or just with the laboratories (to find a location that has the best projects for you)?
  25. It seems like not everyone got this email so I am going to attempt to paste it here. I can also forward it to anyone who feels comfortable sharing their email. Apologies if this breaks any rules, I'm still relatively new here. ---- Applicants FAQ I applied already, but my eGEM status/homepage still says "Pending Verification" next to each school and my University count still says 0 of 3. How do I change this status? As an applicant, you cannot change the "Pending Verification". The GEM Representative at each of the Universities has to log into the application system (eGEM) and click on a link called ‘Verify Fellowship Applicants’, and click a button to verify that you indeed applied. The average GEM University Rep completes this action by February 1st. Please refrain from contacting the GEM Rep until at least a week after the posted deadline of January 15, 2020. It is not necessary to contact the GEM University to complete this action, if you have not received an offer by a GEM employer and accepted that offer. This status update does not affect your eligibility to be selected. If an university reports in error that you did not apply. Just email your proof to fellowships@gemfellowship.org. Is there any way I can tell GEM that I already applied to at least three (3) GEM Member Universities? Yes, you can log into eGEM and self-report; click on ‘Click here to update your record on schools to which you have applied and/or been accepted’ at the bottom of the Graduate School section on your home/status page. Please only click ‘Applied’ AFTER you have actually applied. This will not change your status screen but it will help the GEM Office work with the GEM University Rep to update your application status. When should I expect to hear from a GEM Employer? GEM Employers are actively reaching out to Completed 2020 GEM applicants right now. Please make sure your voicemail is updated with a professional outgoing message. Please respond within 24 hours to any requests for an interview or other GEM Employer inquiries. You will see your homepage Employer status change from unmatched, to matched, to released as your application is previewed by several Employers. Do not be concerned with the Employer status.
