If anyone has any background with Harvard, I wouldnt mind getting their opinion on my app as well. M.Div program GPA 3.82/4 Academic: UG Honors Program, PHI honors Program, P.B.K Languages: 1 year of German ECs: elected position at church and two on campus, 3 public speaking awards Work Exp: Applying from UG, Internship with a Court, some private tutoring Research: Senior Thesis (Philosophy-Military Ethics) GREs: Didnt Submit

I appled to both as well. I think you have a very realistic chance at Yale (67% admit, B+ average GPA) given your ministry exp. There are other factors at hand as well, ECs in school? Research? Language Background? All that stuff is considered. Being from Alaska Wont hurt you if anything it *might* help a bit given that has the geographic diversity factor.. Whats your denomination? Thats worth considering too, Yale while nonsectarian, it is heavily influenced by the episcopal tradition. Harvard has the most brutal admissions standards (33% in past years) and they said they had a record # of apps so I cant really give any insight on your chances (or mine for that matter)

I applied to these schools in chronological order. 1. Duke Divinity (M.Div) 2. Yale Divinity (M.Div) 3. Harvard Divinity ( M.Div, Just submitted today..... barely in under the deadline cutoff ) I would have applied to more, but praise be to God I got accepted at Duke in their first round of apps.... so... I'm set! Now If you'll excuse me I have to go watch the Steelers PwN the Cardinals.

I am hoping to become a military chaplain, then after a few years doing that go back for a Th.M + Doctorate and teach. Good news about the M.Div.... I kill their GPA curve but Im not really sure thats what they are looking for necessarily (prospective apps I met there had insane work exp or grad degrees.), it makes more sense that the MAR would be more competitive than M.Div though.

Other: Professional Ministry and Political Theology... didnt really seem to fit into one of the categories -
Figured I would give it its own topic, given the amount of recent posts made about this school. Put your program and any relevant stats, ECs, research etc. Along with any info you have that may be useful to all of us. I found out some interesting Financial Aid info via their admissions handbook, and from visiting. M.Divs 5 Marquand Scholarships (academic achievement, leadership ability, spiritual maturity, Full tuition + 5k) 3 Nickerson Scholarships (commitment to ordained ministry, academic achievement, Full tuition +2.5k) 4 Tweedy Scholarships (academic achievement, pastoral leadership, Full tuition +1.5k) given about 70 incoming M.Divs, 12/70=est. 17% get full tuition with stipend or living allowence M.A.Rs Marquand (academic achievement, leadership ability, spiritual maturity Full tuition +5k) given about 50 M.A.Rs 5/50= est. 10% get full tuition with stipend. Other Sources William Sloane Coffin Scholarship (Social Justice) Forman Scholarship (Overseas Student with financial need) Sengel Scholarship (Student from Developing Country) Ping Teh scholarship (Chinese-American, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Singapore) Average aid amounts to 80% tuition Average GPA of entering students lands at about a B+ Source Bulliten of Yale University, Divinity School 2008-2009, and information from prospective student open house. M.Div GPA 3.82/4 Academic: UG Honors Program, PHI honors Program, P.B.K Languages: 1 year of German ECs: elected position at church and two on campus, 3 public speaking awards Work Exp: Applying from UG, Internship with a Court, some private tutoring Research: Senior Thesis GREs: Didnt Submit Ordination: in process PS: My Top Choice! Just in case Yale Adcomms lurk these boards >_>

2009 Application: Religion-Theology-Philosophy of Religion
Jufarius87 replied to demondeac's topic in Religion
Wow.... you guys are scaring me with the language backgrounds... Going for M.Div GPA 3.82/4 (Philosophy and Mathematics) ECs at church and school (elected positions) senior thesis / honors program in philosophy. P.B.K Didnt Submit GREs 1 year of German.... even though I did well in it I think I'd prefer to take up a different language in Grad school... Hebrew or Arabic probably Hoping the lack of languages doesnt hurt me (not intending on going on for doctorate immediately after M.Div) Anyone got Questions let me know. -
2009 Application: Religion-Theology-Philosophy of Religion
Jufarius87 replied to demondeac's topic in Religion
Just sent my application a few days ago, application checklist went complete today. I think (supposing I am one of the lucky roughly 50%) that it is going to be a matter of funding for me. I broke down the numbers and roughly 10% of entering M.A.Rs (5 out of roughly 50 entering) get the marquand (full tuition + 5k stipend ) and roughly 10 of M.Divs (8 out of 70-80 entering) get either a marquand or a nickerson (full tuition + 2.5k). There are also other full tuition awards that seemed more specialized (Forman, Sengal, Teh Sie), So I imagine at the end of the day roughly 10-15% get a free ride with stipend. Adcomms also indicated the average fin aid package was about 80% of tuition. Little obsessed with Yale as it is my first choice... -

I went to Yale's open house, what seems to be the case is that the concentrated MAR is more difficult to get into than the comprehensive MAR. That said, their overall admit rate is about 55-67% depending on the year (goto yale web and search YDS by the numbers) an the adcomm said their average entering gpa was about a B+, so if your UG is strong and your masters is in a related field I would imagine you have a very good chance of making the concentrated MAR (which is probably what you would want if you already have an MA and want to focus on Greek and biblical texts). -

m suprised Yale isnt on that list.... -
yeesh, you'd think people who'd already gone through an M.Div program would have more academic discipline then that.... The Holy Land program sounds pretty interesting, I guess the D.Min is the kind of program that you get what you put into it.
-
What is it for? No, seriously.... It usually cant net you a job teaching, and a church usually wont pay you more just because you can call yourself doctor.... so.... why? Is it just a way for ministers to obtain the title/stay intellectually focused?

Got into Duke M.Div program! :-D -
How difficult is it to get into M.Div programs? And.... what are the most important factors? I've heard there is a huge discrepency between doctoral and masters degree admissions, but I am still kind of nervous given that my first admit/reject letter should be coming soon.
-
have you take math courses at your college? do you have a strong gpa in that field? If you have dont worry about your Q. GRE Q is really high school math so if you did well in college math you pretty much negate a less than stellar Q score (unless its horendous sub 450)
-
I applied to school that said it takes a max of 6 weeks to send out admissions letters. Im currently at the end of week four. This probably seems neurotic as helk but, is it true that you have a better chance of rejection at the end of an admit cycle or do you think they are just still going through applications?
-
As far as doctoral programs in Religion/Theology are concerned, what do you guys think is the best prep for getting in AND surviving the program once you've been accepted? In short, I heard someone else on these boards say that two masters degress has become common place before applying to Ph.Ds.... I guess my question is what kind is preferable? For example Would an M.Div/S.T.M combination or an M.A/M.A or an M.Div/M.A combination be more appealing to adcomms? What fields should one focus on? Is it good to have one of the MAs be in philosophy or literature or some other non-theological field? How essential is it for your undergraduate degree to be in religion (mine personally was in philosophy and mathematics)? Personally, I have to go the M.Div route, but I thought it would be interesting to Discuss Strategy For getting in and completing the program
-
You sould really consider applying to some more prestigious programs than the ones you've listed. Will lack of name rec as far as school and LORS hurt you abit? yes. but not so much that you should deny yourself the (very realistic) chance of getting into a top program given your great numbers and ECs. Im a Divinity/Theology guy who hasnt considered politics in quite sometime. I was looking into that field at one point though and you seem very competitive for top schools. Also consider applying for some terminal MA/MPhil/MPP.... w/e terminal masters suits your interests.... that way if you dont get into a top PhD first time around you will get into a top masters and get LORS with name rec so you can try again.... I think you are cutting yourself short given your current list of schools.

2009 Application: Religion-Theology-Philosophy of Religion
Jufarius87 replied to demondeac's topic in Religion
Definately applying to... Harvard Divinity (M.Div) Yale Divinity (M.Div) Duke Divinity (M.Div) American U in Cairo (M.A Middle East Studies) Maybe applying to.... Northeastern Seminary (M.Div) Jerusalem University College (M.A Middle Eastern Cultures and Religions) University of Glasgow (M.Litt War Studies) King's College London (M.A War Studies) Christ Church Oxford (M.St Jewish Studies/M.Phil Middle East Studies) The ultimate goal is ordination then military (few years in a combat job then chaplaincy). Academic Interests consist primarily of Political Theology and diplomatic relations between nations of different Abrahamic faiths, church history (especially interested in the schisms which created denominations), Comparitive Theology between Christianity and Judaism. While I realize I pretty much have to do the M.Div at some point, the other programs seem complimentary given my interests. GPA 3.812/4.0 PBK, summa all those nicities. ECs: elected church positions, elected spots in school clubs, No real work exp beyond a govt internship i did one summer No language background I'll tell you how it goes, although most of you guys seem a step ahead in that you are already looking toward Ph.Ds..... Best of luck! -
oxford only requires it for philosophical theology and economics......
-
You seem to have done everything right to be considered. I noticed you didnt mention your quantitative score though, that can be important as some departments consider it a test of your critical thinking abilities
-
UK schools dont require GREs which is always a plus.

Your best bet for a program that will help you gain admission to top Ph.D program and prepare you for such programs are in the United Kingdom. B.Phil Oxford M.Phil Cambridge or St. Andrews M.Sc Edinburgh. If you want to stay in the states though, I heard Tufts and Georgia State both have good M.A programs
