  1. Interesting that it would be an "Institute of Technology" that uses the most outdated technology for notifying prospective students.
  2. Me too, although this is a recent development because that's not what I saw earlier this morning.
  3. You generally do not have to write the dissertation to be a community college professor. Many students in my terminal MA program will not go on to get a PhD and will teach at a community college, and make a decent wage. My thought would be, if you're not going to wind up being a tenure track professor anyway, you might just save yourself a few years of dissertation writing and do an MA program in 2 years. I don't know anything about you, so I can't assess the probability that you would get a tenure track position, but the theory market is bad, and only having 2 or 3 schools to apply to for these positions makes it pretty impossible even if you're quite good.
  4. I put the details up on the results search, but chances are if you logged into the application and still don't know what I'm talking about then you are not rejected yet.
  5. I just checked the Duke website and my rejection letter is also up.
  6. poliscijobrumors confirms. Not 100% reliable information, but it seems about that time anyway. Plus, the last three posts were speculation about today, and I am susceptible to peer pressure.
  7. I think some people will be rejected from UCLA this afternoon.
  8. I will take a 2 week nap.
  9. I had a pretty similar experience. I'm actually quite glad it worked out this way, because I think I'll do better in the job market now than if I had done better in the admissions cycle the first time around.
  10. As someone who was not particularly successful applying as an undergrad, I hope you fare better than I did.
  11. That is a very short and high quality list, fenderpete. You must be either be sufficiently awesome or sufficiently risk acceptant.
  12. Less annoying than if they actually relied on old fashioned mail.
  13. I think that's code for "don't call us or email us."
  14. Sort of. The results search showed a big wave of rejections on 02/06, and then acceptances started trickling in 3 or 4 days later. Edit: UCLA, in contrast, is quite a bit more bleak, with a bunch of early rejections and no acceptances until the second or third week in Feb. I really don't want to hear from UCLA next week.
  15. ....and the Puppy Bowl!
  16. It looks like Stanford and UCLA are the schools we should hope NOT to hear from next week, since all of the early notifications were negative.
  17. Yeah, I know all of this stuff, but 'tis the season for irrational freaking out I guess. If people are going to get off the wait-list at UIUC, I'm thinking it could be to my advantage that they're not going to decide that until April, because I have two papers that have been under review at major journals for months. Hearing something positive from them between now and April might move me closer to the top of that list, I hope. The good news is, it's the weekend, and we can have two days of not speculating about whether or not departments are going to send out emails or call candidates! Edit: I was just watching the South Park episode, "Something Wall-Mart This Way Comes", and it occurs to me that my relationships to thegradcafe is beginning to look like Randy's relationship to Wall-Mart in this episode. I clearly know that it would be better for my sanity if this place did not exist, but since it does, I am unable to stay away from it.
  18. In any case, I am in the unique circumstance of having eliminated about a third of that list already on the basis of my spouse not being admitted to the law school. She is already in at WUSTL, which moves them right up the list. After my UIUC waitlist, I am feeling like my list should have looked a lot different anyway. Live and learn...
  19. I'm with you CA, but I think a lot of us are pretty down on our chances at this stage. I quick glance at my list of schools should reveal why a waitlist from UIUC brought quite a jolt of pessimism about the rest of my admissions cycle. My top choice is WUSTL--my cycle would be pretty much over if I was admitted there.
  20. The letter said they only had room for 10 students this year. Does anyone know how that compares to last year?
  21. On the wait list as of this morning.
  22. Well, given that they posted on January 8 that they were accepted on January 31 (which is tomorrow), I think it's quite possibly crap.
  23. Word is that Emory usually has a couple of waves of admits, so I'd say you can wait a long time before being discouraged. Looks like people were still getting into Emory in early March last year. Also, it seems like Emory is going to interview a bunch of people. I don't know why I even read poliscijobrumors, but someone on that site says "This is typical for Emory. They accept a few favorites and interview the rest on their short list." Normally, as the other people on the board have pointed out, you have to take anything on that board with a grain of thought, but this seems to match the results search records from last year. (Note also that I did not apply to Emory, so you know that I do not have a strong incentive for such rosy thinking. )
