  1. Got rejected from Syracuse and Purdue this week. It looks like I am headed to University of Kentucky. I realize it's not the highest ranked program, but I am excited about it anyway, assuming COVID-19 doesn't ruin everything. Also, a side note, I think I found out one of my recommenders thought I was applying for Spanish programs, so maybe that played a role in my many rejections! Oh well.
  2. Does anyone know if University of Iowa is sending out rejections to its waitlist? I got a rejection email today from them, but I had formerly been told I was on the highest tier of the waitlist. I emailed them to clear up the confusion. I didn't think I'd hear anything until closer to the 4/15 deadline.
  3. Has anyone not heard from Syracuse and/or Purdue yet? Just wondering because I haven't.
  4. Does anyone know about the program at University of Kentucky? I was just accepted there today with funding. I don't really know much about it. I am also waitlisted at University of Iowa and accepted at another lower-ranking school. I'm glad I was accepted, but I honestly thought I was only going to have one choice, so this makes it a bit harder!
  5. Just got an email from a professor at a school about my application, asking to clarify something, so I guess the review process is indeed beginning.
  6. I can't make it through In the Shadow of Young Girls in Flower for some reason. I've tried two or three times.
  7. I'm not sure what to make of Updike to be honest. I enjoyed Rabbit, Run a long time ago, which is why I picked up Rabbit Redux. So far--I'm about halfway through--it doesn't seem as good, which seems to correspond with Lockwood's review.
  8. I feel the same way. I'm done with all my applications, but have no idea what to expect. I'm just hoping to get into any of the programs I applied to. The closest analog I can think of is when I applied for the MFA. Due to logistics I could only apply to two schools. I got waitlisted at one, and accepted at the other without funding. But after a few weeks the program that hadn't offered me funding emailed back and said they had funding for me. At that point I had assumed I would not be getting an MFA. It just seems entirely random that I was able to get an MFA with funding--clearly someone had turned down an offer, which opened a space for me.
  9. I caught a very small error (an "s" missing) in my critical essay. I'm not that worried about it, as it's part of a quotation, and could be construed as the author's error (or preference). Still, I hope no one notices.
  10. This happened for one of my applications. I dashed off a response but probably should have spent more time on it. Oh well.
  11. I submitted my Northwestern application, but it still says "Materials Needed" on the checklist. I got an email from Northwestern saying they had my complete application though. I'm guessing the system just hasn't been updated? Maybe I will email them.
  12. Hello, all. I am applying this year for the English PhD. I just discovered this forum. Not sure I have any chance of admission but I've been submitting applications. I have my MFA and an MA in Latin American Studies. My undergraduate GPA was relatively low because I was majoring in chemical engineering and didn't switch majors until my last year. GRE scores are fine (except quantitative) and graduate grades are good. I'm not sure what to expect but I'm already getting anxious about the process. Currently I teach English at a private high school. I have published a lot of poetry, but I would doubt that helps me in the application process. Anyway, I just wanted to wish everyone luck, and maybe I'll come back to post my results when they finally arrive next year!
