I personally hold Brown in a high regard, as well as Princeton (as long as you are not a Caribbeanist). I would avoid Yale at all cost, even if that was the only one that accepted me. As for Harvard, I am not too crazy about the program but you have to admit that the name carries a lot of weight and prestige. In this dynamic between Oxford vs X-Ivy, I would definitely choose Brown (always), seriously consider Princeton, Harvard and Oxford for me are pretty equal. Yale is a NO for me. Seriously, that department has a lot of problem and simply switching some professors around but keeping them is very problematic for me. That just shows that they care about name recognition not the safety of their graduate students.

Although not mentioned, I do like Cornell a lot and Columbia, though talking to some of the grad students made me nervous about it.

Hi, I am also a fan of Cornell and Columbia. But I am curious about what problems make you nervous? Thank you!

Do you guys have any news on NYU? I entered my dream program, but I am waiting for my NYU rejection letter to end all this. I didn't get an interview, so I'm pretty sure they don't want me at Washington Square Park.

Hi María, I got interviewed by NYU, but then there's no further news. I saw people already reported offer. So I assume a rejection. I am planning to write to the program director this week to see if they keep a waiting list or something, so that I can make my decision with other offers.

How is everyone doing with the decision making? I have to choose between three programs, all which have pros and cons and I am struggling with it. What are some things you guys are considering in your decision making process?

That's a good question. In addition to those concerns already mentioned above, I am wondering how you guys think about big cities vs small towns. ?

Some of friends would like to do a Ph.D. in New York City, where people enjoy more cultural resources, and dynamic life. Others prefer small towns, where living expenses are less stressful. Personally, I am a little bit more inclined towards big city, but living in small places will definitely make me more concentrated on the studies. I am curious about your opinions. Any idea?

Same! Did you have one or two interviews? (In years past, it seems applicants went through two rounds of interviewing.)

I only had one interview with the Admission Committee.
But a friend (from another department at Columbia) told me today that LAIC sent out 5 offers this year. I don't think they keep a wait-list thing. So I am assuming a rejection. But I still hope to receive the notification asap - whatever it turns out to be - so that I can make my decision.

Also, would anyone like to claim the Columbia offer?

Hi, I am also curious about the offer, and rejections as well. I read that two people reported rejections, one via website and the other via email. That made me confused, because my portal still says nothing about update of status.

  6. Hi guys. I saw someone posted on being accepted to NYU. Congratulations!
If you happen to see my post, would you mind sharing more details? Do you receive the offer from DGS or someone else? I was interviewed, and anxious to know the result. Thank you!

@hanxiaobojing have you heard back from Washington U. in st. Louis?

Hi, I withdraw my application actually, as I decided to take another offer. I suppose you can write to the chair to check what's going on. Good luck!

Did anyone apply to NYU and has heard from them?

Hi, I applied to NYU and had an interview this past Wednesday with two members of the admission committee. They said they would make decision in the next two weeks.

Congrats!! Yes, I’m planning to visit! Are you?

    Cool, then enjoy your trip!

I would love to! But unfortunately, I don't think I can catch up with the official campus visit week as a Chinese national (and I currently live in China), as it has been declared that "foreign nationals who have traveled to China in the last two weeks are temporarily banned from entering the US" in view of the spread of new coronavirus.  I will check if there is any opportunity that I can travel later when the health situation gets better.

I also got into UVA with the same package! I'm not sure about living in Charlottesville either.

I was contacted yesterday by Yale for an interview, and Stanford for a campus visit/interview. I was also accepted to Cornell yesterday, which I'm very excited about! I wasn't expecting to hear so soon from any of them.

Hi, congratulations! I was accepted to Cornell as well. Do you plan for the campus visit?

You guys, I received an interview invite for Princeton! I’m over the moon, they’re flying me to campus for two days of meetings and introductions and all that jazz. Wish me luck!

    Wow! Congratulations!

  12. Just wondering if anyone applies to Washington University in St. Louis as well?

I applied to Columbia as well, but have got no further news so far. ?Just to mention that the application system of Columbia allows for opportunities to update your materials, though I am not sure whether the new documents will be considered first by the committee before the previous ones. Anyway, I just updated my CV and SoP, as I have done further research on my proposed topic and I would like to share, even for its own sake.

    Good luck to all!?

  14. ¡Hola Hola! Nice to e-meet you all! I am applying to hispanic PhD programs in US and Canada this year. My research focuses on the modern and contemporary Latin American literature and culture more broadly and I am interested in urban and landscape studies, visual culture and critical theory.

I am still striving to finish all the materials and will try my best to catch up with the first due. I feel super stressed as I am working at the same time and I am from China without academic experience in English-speaking countries. T.T But anyway, good luck to all! (with fingers crossed
